Chapter 117

While Marsha’s wasn’t the most severe heart case the department had seen, it was still heart disease nonetheless. This young woman didn’t prioritize her health as she should. Marsha shot an angry glare at Charles. No matter how she stirred him up, Charles seemed to sense he was asking for trouble. He feared her anger might cause her harm. With a sigh, he remarked, “If you’re discharged and something happens again, you’ll just have to get it yourself.”

Though his words were logical, they didn’t sit well with her. She pointed to the bag by her bedside. “Your phone is in my bag. Get it.” She had initially stayed back to return his phone. She hadn’t anticipated she’d end up in the hospital herself.

Charles hesitated, his eyes resting on Marsha. So, rather than being outside the operating room to complain, Marsha had been there to return his phone? At the time, he had been so preoccupied that he hadn’t considered his phone at all. Later, after Marsha’s recovery, he sent someone to search for it, but nothing was found in the outpatient department corridor. Since someone could have taken his phone, he was surprised to find Marsha had kept it for him.

He glanced at Marsha, realizing he had completely misunderstood her. When Charles just stood there, Marsha shot him a sharp look. “What? Do you expect me to fetch it for you?” His gaze gave Marsha the creeps. He regained his composure and gave Marsha a nonchalant look. “No, that’s not necessary.”

He returned to the hospital bed, picked up the bag, and handed it to Marsha, catching her off guard. Despite telling him to get it himself, she hadn’t expected him to understand the situation so well. She retrieved his phone and gave it to Charles.

Charles checked the screen and saw numerous missed calls. After confirming it was indeed his phone, he felt relieved. He looked at Marsha and said, “Thanks a lot.”

She scoffed and retorted dismissively. “I went through a lot because of your phone. You really think a simple ‘thank you’ is enough?” He was being far too optimistic.

Charles frowned. “I knew it. Nothing comes that easy.” Judging by her rather detached demeanor, it would be surprising if she were being pleasant. Marsha wasn’t upset at all. She flashed a triumphant smile at him and said, “Glad you know that.” Being polite wasn’t an option for her, so she decided to be direct. “Organize my discharge right now. It’s such a simple task.” She felt no physical discomfort. In fact, staying in the hospital was making her feel uneasy.

Charles’ expression soured as he looked at her. “You can forget that. Just stay in the hospital and be good.”

“Well, stop being a doctor. That would be responsible to the patient, wouldn’t it?” Driving Marsha’s expression dark as well, Charles didn’t give her room to insist. He firmly stated, “Just call me if you need anything. I’m off to do the rounds now.” He turned and left.

Marsha immediately felt quite irritated. How frustrating that she couldn’t even get discharged from the hospital! She turned over and resumed reading the script she had been looking at earlier. Yet she didn’t dare rake the rich, so she lay obediently. If she couldn’t be discharged, then so be it.

It was late. The hospital was silent, and most of the lights were off, with only a few dim night lights still glowing. Austin had just returned home. After changing his shoes, he ascended the stairs slowly. He glanced at a marking on the hall’s doorknob; it was always locked. Austin paused. His eyebrows knitted together slightly when he realized Suzanne was likely asleep at this hour. He decided to head to the study instead. Water filled the study’s bathroom.
