Chapter 319

Sebastian was sprawled on the couch nearby, sipping water, his eyes locked on her, calm and steady. Lottie Lucanoโ€™s voice came through, heavy with worry. โ€œI knew that little brat was scheming something with you.โ€

โ€œMy poor girl, you mustโ€™ve been scared stiff, huh?โ€ Her tone was all warm concern.

Stephanie mumbled back, quiet. โ€œMom, Iโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWait until weโ€™re back in Fiorenzaโ€”Iโ€™ll rip him to shreds, I swear,โ€ Lottie vowed, full of fire.

Stephanie went still, her brain tripping over itself.

Lottie kept going. โ€œDonโ€™t you stress, Iโ€™ll fix this for you.โ€

Stephanie flicked her eyes to Sebastian on the couch, her cheeks turning pink. Lottie was still rolling, unrestrained, but Stephanieโ€™s heart was already softening, a tiny smile creeping up.

Sebastian had mentioned calling her mom earlier, and sheโ€™d been a mess sinceโ€”nerves all twisted up. Her momโ€™s opinion meant everythingโ€”her whole future with Sebastian hinged on it. He was the heir to Fiorenzaโ€™s old-school Lucano family and the one running the Giovanni house. Tradition said he needed a wife from the right stockโ€”a real heiress, born into the perfect social circle.

Back in Fiorenza, her mom had hauled him around to meet tons of those primped-up society ladies. Sheโ€™d always thought it was a setup for some big, calculated marriage later. But this? Lottieโ€™s reaction was throwing Stephanie off completely.

โ€œMom, youโ€™re not mad at me?โ€ Stephanie asked, her voice shaky and small. Her nose burned, tears stinging the corners of her eyes.

Lottie gasped, shocked. โ€œOh, sweetie, youโ€™re really rattledโ€”saying silly stuff now!โ€

Stephanie blinked, totally confused. She couldnโ€™t quite follow her momโ€™s vibe.

โ€œHe said heโ€™s getting the marriage license tomorrow,โ€ she blurted, jumping at the chance to lay it all out.

Sebastian gave her a look, one eyebrow cocked, a spark of mischief in his gaze. The line went silent for a secondโ€”then Lottie blew up. โ€œWhat? A marriage license? Just like that?โ€

Stephanie flinched, jarred by the outburst. Lottieโ€™s voice cranked louder. โ€œYou said yes?โ€ It was basically a shout, all stunned disbelief.

Stephanieโ€™s throat closed up. She swallowed hard.

โ€œShouldโ€ฆshould I not have?โ€ she squeaked, almost too quiet to hear.

โ€œOf course not! You canโ€™t let that brat off that easily!โ€ Lottie snapped, fuming.

โ€œThat little sneak, pulling this on youโ€”trying to get a free ride? Stefi, listen upโ€ฆโ€ She was off and running, unstoppable.

Sebastian got up, strolling over, his steps slow and smooth. Before Lottie could finish, he snatched the phone from Stephanieโ€™s hand and ended the call without hesitation.

Stephanie looked up at him, eyes wide. โ€œMom said I shouldnโ€™t just go along with the license thing.โ€ She barely finished before his hand slid behind her head. He kissed her, out of nowhereโ€”hard but soft, a kiss that didnโ€™t mess around. She shoved at his chest at first, hands pushing, but then she melted, letting him pull her in. Lottieโ€™s reaction had finally smashed her last bit of doubt. With Sebastian, the barriers were downโ€”just trust and a gooey warmth filling her up.

Ten minutes later, the room felt hotter, the air thick with a flirty buzz. Sebastian eased back, his voice low and rough. โ€œLittle vixen.โ€

Stephanie caught her breath, muttering under her breath, โ€œMom sounded like sheโ€™s fine with me but ready to chew you out.โ€

Sebastianโ€™s lips twitched into a smirk. He leaned in and gave her earlobe a light nip, just enough to send a little shiver down her spine. Lottie had to be reelingโ€”Sebastian hitting her with that out of nowhere, totally throwing her off. Her own son, and sheโ€™d never picked up on his feelings for Stephanie. Sheโ€™d been dead-set on pairing him with some fancy, high-class girl, but heโ€™d dodged everyone. Too thin? Nah. Too full? No thanks. Sheโ€™d trotted out girls left and right, and heโ€™d shut it down every time.

Turns out the sneaky guy had his sights locked on Stephanie the whole time, just biding his time. She was only now catching up.

โ€œShe loved you,โ€ Sebastian said, letting out a soft laugh. โ€œYouโ€™re such a dork.โ€

Stephanieโ€™s mouth quirked, her eyes narrowing with a touch of annoyance. Yeah, her mom loved her, but this wasnโ€™t some little thingโ€”she still felt a nervous buzz.

โ€œDork, huh?โ€ He poked at her again, his voice all playful. She huffed and gave his waist a good twist, her grip sharp and sassy.

Sebastianโ€™s eyes flashed, narrowing. โ€œKeep that up, and I might not play nice.โ€ Her soft hands twisting him like that? It was getting under his skin, waking something up. He grabbed her hand, rubbing it in his palm, a fresh spark lighting up in his head.
