282 Canโ€™t Tell Him

I blinked, still processing. Our eyes met. Her brown eyes searched mine. โ€œWhatโ€™s going to happenโ€ฆ between you and the triplets?โ€ My breath caught in my throat. I nodded. โ€œThank you.โ€ Before I could respond, he reached for my hand. I hesitatedโ€ฆ then slowly nodded. โ€œThen Iโ€™m coming too.โ€

There. I said it out loud. โ€œMmhmm,โ€ she hummed, glancing toward him, then back at me. โ€œWell, heโ€™s definitely not looking at his coffee.โ€ She leaned forward just a little. โ€œHe hasnโ€™t taken his eyes off you since he walked in.โ€ My eyes widened. โ€œBut your sonโ€“โ€ โ€œIs his,โ€ she confirmed softly. โ€œThereโ€™s no doubt. But I never told him. I was too afraid of what it would mean for himโ€ฆ for us.โ€ She sighed deeply, her gaze falling to the table as if the truth weighed too much to look me in the eye. โ€œFirst, he thinks he canโ€™t get a woman pregnant.โ€ Sofia didnโ€™t press it further, thankfully. Stillโ€ฆ hearing Sofia say it made something inside me settle.

I stiffened slightly, unsure of what he was doing. Sofia sat straighter. She smirked slightly, her voice teasing. โ€œYou know Lord Frederick?โ€ The question settled heavily between us. โ€œAnd the third?โ€ I asked quietly, though I already knew. I turned back to her. โ€œOf course.โ€ โ€œForgive the interruption,โ€ he said, his voice as smooth as velvet. โ€œBut I couldnโ€™t walk out of here without saying hello. Itโ€™s good to see you again.โ€ I nodded slowly, blinking away the sting in my eyes. โ€œThank you.โ€ โ€œOlivia,โ€ she said gently, โ€œI donโ€™t know everything youโ€™ve been through. And I wonโ€™t pretend I understand all the pain youโ€™ve carriedโ€“but I do know one thing. Iโ€™ve seen the way those men cherish you.โ€ โ€œI couldnโ€™t tell himโ€ฆโ€ Sofia whispered, her fingers tightening around her coffee cup. โ€œLady Olivia,โ€ he said smoothly as he stopped at our table. His eyes rested on me for a beat longer than necessary. Sofia had noticed.

Instead, her voice shifted toneโ€“softer now, a bit more serious. โ€œCan I ask you something?โ€ โ€œI know,โ€ she whispered. โ€œI will somedayโ€ฆ but not just nowโ€ฆโ€ I offered a small, dry smile. โ€œWhy not? I could use a distraction.โ€ I rolled my eyes and muttered, โ€œGreatโ€ฆโ€ Sofia and I sat in silence, sipping the last of our drinks. There was something strangely comforting about sitting with her like this. Weโ€™d missed so many years of sisterhood, but somehowโ€ฆ this felt easy. I frowned slightly, unsure of what she meant. I cleared my throat and tried to keep my expression neutral. โ€œNot reallyโ€ฆ I only met him during my welcoming party. Briefly.โ€

I couldnโ€™t help but laugh. Her shoulders slumped. โ€œBecause weโ€™re related.โ€ She raised her hands in mock surrender. โ€œFine, fine. Butโ€ฆ in all honesty, heโ€™s a good man. A bit serious, but polite. He has a long-standing relationship with our family.โ€ โ€œThey love you,โ€ she said firmly. โ€œAll three of them. No matter what has happenedโ€“or is happeningโ€“you should never question that. Itโ€™s obvious in the way they speak about you. That kind of loveโ€ฆ doesnโ€™t disappear, even when itโ€™s messy.โ€ She grinned. โ€œGreat. Letโ€™s wear something fabulous and make the whole room stare.โ€ They did love me. I looked down at my hands. โ€œI donโ€™t know,โ€ I admitted truthfully. โ€œI really donโ€™t. Itโ€™s complicated. Everything isโ€ฆ confusing. But theyโ€™re my mates. My second chance mates.โ€ I quickly looked away, pretending to stir my empty cup. That word hit harder than I expected. Itโ€™s funny how I was also in this shit with the triplets.

Oliviaโ€™s POV

I froze. Sofia chuckled softly. โ€œSeems like someone has a little crush.โ€ But then he gave a polite nod and continued further into the cafรฉ, accompanied by another man I didnโ€™t recognize. They took a seat near the far window, their backs partially turnedโ€ฆ but Frederickโ€™s gaze found mine again. And just like thatโ€“he nodded politely and turned away, walking back to his seat, where the other man was now standing, ready to leave. Sofia held the envelope, staring at it like it might explode. โ€œThat man isโ€ฆ dramatic,โ€ she muttered with a half-smile. Before she could finish, the bell above the cafรฉ door chimed softly again. She glanced at me and shrugged. โ€œYes. I think I need it. A little air, a little musicโ€ฆ maybe a drink or two to clear my head.โ€ A small, fragile piece of me that had been fighting to breathe. I stared at her. I knew she was right. She gave me a sad smile. โ€œWith everything I have. But sometimesโ€ฆ love isnโ€™t enough.โ€ โ€œHe does,โ€ she replied, sipping from her cup again. โ€œBut he visits often. Something about trade routes and estate bordersโ€ฆ he has business here. And our late father trusts him.โ€ My brow arched. โ€œWhy is he here, though? I thought he lived outside the territory.โ€ I never doubted their feelings. I frowned. โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ โ€œAnd the second reason?โ€ I asked gently.

My brows drew together, a mix of concern and curiosity swirling in my chest. โ€œWhy?โ€ He straightened and glanced between us. โ€œAn invitation. Tonight is my birthday. Nothing grand. Just a quiet gathering with wine, music, and maybe a little dancing if the mood allows. Iโ€™d love it if you both came.โ€ He had left his seat and was now walking directly toward us, his presence calm but commanding. His eyes, sharp and unreadable, were fixed on me. I looked away, my gaze drifting to the window beside us. The reflection of Lord Frederick still lingered faintly in the glass, his subtle glances in my direction making my skin feel a little too warm. I hated the feeling. The attention. He hadnโ€™t expected to see me either. That much was clear. Sofia didnโ€™t look surprised. Instead, she nodded slowly like she already suspected it. I shot her a look. โ€œPlease donโ€™t.โ€ She smiled softly. โ€œJust donโ€™t let fear make the choice for you.โ€ I looked at her, still stunned. โ€œAre you going?โ€ โ€œIโ€™ll be expecting you.โ€ Then, from the corner of my eye, I noticed movement. Sofia took it cautiously. โ€œWhat is it?โ€ My lips parted, but no sound came out! Because walking through that door, dressed in a dark navy suit and carrying himself with the same quiet confidence I rememberedโ€ฆ was Lord Frederick. His steps faltered for the briefest second. โ€œIs his,โ€ she confirmed softly.

I reached across the table and gently placed my hand over hers. โ€œHe deserves to know he has a son.โ€ And gentlyโ€“far too gentlyโ€“he lifted it and pressed a kiss to the back of it. I was silent, absorbing all of it.
