Listen to this chapter:

257 It Wasnโ€™t Olivia

A heavy silence fell. My hands clenched at my sides, my anger rising.

With my heart racing, I stared at the body, wondering why Rebeccaโ€™s head was here. I knew nobody had opened this graveโ€“it was sealedโ€“so how? I exchanged bewildered glances with my brothers. They looked just as lost as I felt, but one thing was clear: this was not Olivia. But how did Rebeccaโ€™s head appear here?

She was Olivia.

The seer looked up, guilt written all over her face.

We all turned to him sharply. โ€œWhat? What is it?โ€ Louis asked.

โ€œNoโ€ฆ fucking wayโ€ฆโ€ Dustin whispered, stumbling a step back.

Louisโ€™s eyes widened slightly. Levi looked up, face pale. Silence.

โ€œWe need to watch him. Closely. Every step. Every move. If Olivia is aliveโ€“since she was never the one in that graveโ€“then Damienโ€™s the key to finding out where she is.โ€

โ€œWhat does this even mean?โ€ Louis asked quietly.

And then-

โ€œIโ€™m sure of it,โ€ I said. โ€œToo many things donโ€™t add up. We never heard of Rebecca until he brought her here, claiming she was his wife. Did you notice how unbothered heโ€™s been about her missing?โ€

I took a good look at the body again, and now, just staring at it, I realized my wolf was silent. He wasnโ€™t mourning like he did.

โ€œExplain?โ€ Levi snapped. โ€œYou said that body was Oliviaโ€™s! You confirmed it yourself. You made us believe she was dead.โ€

Both my brothers nodded, and we all went silent.

โ€œNo,โ€ I cut in. โ€œWe donโ€™t trust you anymore.โ€

โ€œBut my son-โ€ she pleaded.

One last glance at the decaying body, then I turned to the guards. โ€œTake the body back to the mortuary.โ€ With that, I walked away, my brothers at my sides.

Confused and growing uneasy, Levi, Louis, and I stepped forward. The guards lifted their flashlights, angling the beams downward. The light hit the inside of the coffin. And everything inside me froze.

I stood up slowly. โ€œYou better have something to explain,โ€ I said coldly.

Louis stared at her in disbelief. โ€œWho did this? Who forced you?โ€

โ€œYou what?โ€

โ€œGo get the seer,โ€ I ordered. Dustin nodded and left.

I exhaled shakily, gripping the edge of the table.

I stood from my chair, my jaw clenched.

โ€œThereโ€™s only one person who might know,โ€ I said firmly.

My brothers both nodded in agreement.

โ€œWe caught her trying to run away,โ€ Dustin said. I narrowed my eyes. Louis folded his arms, his glare sharp. Levi stayed silent, his jaw tight.

โ€œThis doesnโ€™t make senseโ€ฆ Rebecca was kidnapped, and now her headโ€™s in the grave we buried Olivia in? The same head we thought belonged to Olivia? Even the blonde hair was goneโ€“replaced with dark hair,โ€ Levi said, confused.

Her knees gave way, and she dropped to the floor.

Back in our study, I turned to face them. They looked just as dumbfounded and confused as me.

We all froze as realization dawned. Our eyes locked on each other. The same thought hit us at once. The Rebecca we metโ€ฆ the one we kissedโ€ฆ the one we felt connected toโ€ฆ

โ€œGodsโ€ฆโ€ I breathed, staring.

โ€œIโ€“I can explain!โ€

I shook my head. โ€œI donโ€™t know. But letโ€™s wait for the seer. She has a lot to explain.โ€ I exhaled, my shoulders heavy.

I sat down, my fingers tangled in my hair, the weight of everything crashing down on me. My brothers stayed nearbyโ€“Louis pacing around, Levi slumped on the couch with his face in his hands. The room was quiet, but the air was thick with confusion.

โ€œDamien.โ€

Both my brothers looked at me.

Louis nodded slowly. โ€œYeahโ€ฆ he knows something. Or heโ€™s hiding something.โ€

Then I turned slowly toward my brothers. โ€œIf the body in that grave was Rebeccaโ€ฆโ€ I trailed off, the weight of what I was about to say hitting me hard. โ€œโ€ฆthen who the hell was the Rebecca we met?โ€

For a moment, the room went still. No one spoke. No one moved.

โ€œUnlessโ€ฆโ€ Dustin swallowed. โ€œUnless that was never Olivia.โ€

My mind kept going back to that coffin. That body. That head. It wasnโ€™t Olivia. I knew it now. Deep down, my soul knew it. My wolf knew it. He hadnโ€™t mourned like he shouldโ€“hadnโ€™t howled in pain, hadnโ€™t stirred at all. Because it wasnโ€™t her. It never was. But thenโ€ฆ Rebecca?

I swallowed hard, my heartbeat thundering in my ears. I gave a slight nod. The guards moved. Slowly, cautiously, they pried open the lid of the coffin. A soft hiss escaped as the seal broke. Then-

โ€œI know,โ€ she said quickly, trembling. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m sorry. I lied.โ€

It was past 1 a.m. My brothers, Clark, Dustin, three guards, and I were at the cemetery behind the mansion. Everywhere was quiet, and the air felt heavy. The guards had just finished digging up the grave. The white coffin was now out and placed in front of us. โ€œWeโ€™ll find a way to help him,โ€ I replied flatly. โ€œBut youโ€™re done here.โ€

Levi cursed under his breath and turned away, running a hand through his hair.

โ€œWhat the actual hell is going on?โ€ Louis whispered in disbelief.

She wasnโ€™t Rebecca.

โ€œWe watched Olivia get buriedโ€ฆ we saw her faceโ€ฆโ€ Clark said, stunned.

โ€œI lied,โ€ she repeated, her voice breaking. โ€œPleaseโ€ฆ forgive me. I had no choice. My only son was kidnapped. I was threatened. They told me if I didnโ€™t lieโ€“if I didnโ€™t say the body was Oliviaโ€™sโ€“theyโ€™d kill him.โ€

Levi narrowed his eyes. โ€œYou think heโ€™s involved?โ€

Lennoxโ€™s POV

Dustin didnโ€™t respond. He just pointed, wide-eyed, into the coffin. โ€œCome look.โ€

โ€œWhat theโ€ฆโ€ Levi gasped.

โ€œYou betrayed us,โ€ Louis added. โ€œYou made us bury the wrong person. You made us mourn Olivia.โ€

โ€œI can do an incantation,โ€ the seer offered quickly. โ€œA vision spell. It might reveal who was behind itโ€”โ€

I leaned forward slowly, my heart pounding harder the more I thought about it. If that head belonged to Rebeccaโ€“then what about the woman I kissed two nights ago? The one I felt so drawn to? The one who made my heart ache with emotions I didnโ€™t understand? Was that reallyโ€ฆ Rebecca? Or someone else entirely? My head spun.

She looked up at me, devastated.

Levi stood up, his eyes dark with confusion. โ€œSince the body wasnโ€™t Olivia, then who did it?โ€

Louis finally spoke. โ€œIf the body was Rebeccaโ€™sโ€ฆ then who the hell was this Rebecca we met?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m begging youโ€ฆ I didnโ€™t want to do it. But I had no other way.โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆ I donโ€™t know,โ€ she said, tears filling her milky eyes. โ€œThey never showed their faces. Only left a note with the threat and instructions. Theyโ€™ve been watching me ever since.โ€

Suddenly, the door burst open, and Dustin stepped in, panting slightly. Behind him was the seer, her head lowered, her eyes not meeting ours. The moment she entered, tension filled the room like smoke.

My mouth went dry. My legs went weak.

The body lying in the coffin was the same. The same dress. The same posture. The same scent. But the headโ€ฆ It wasnโ€™t Oliviaโ€™s. It was Rebeccaโ€™s. Her severed head had been placed on the body we buried. Her eyes closed. Lifeless.

Because if the body in the coffin was not Oliviaโ€“then where the hell was she? And why was Rebeccaโ€™s head there instead? None of it made sense. And that was the scariest part.

โ€œGet out,โ€ I said coldly.

Dustin escorted her out, her sobs echoing behind her as the door shut.

Silence hung in the air. Tense. Thick. Terrifying.
