Chapter 50

โ€œMr. Reyes, Iโ€™m afraid itโ€™s not just Mrs. Reyesโ€™ issue,โ€ the assistant interjected. โ€œIโ€™ve discovered some unsettling news. Recently, there have been multiple cases of women disappearing in our city and the neighboring one.โ€

Chaseโ€™s brow furrowed. โ€œDisappearing? How are they going missing?โ€

โ€œThere are various circumstances. Some met people online, others were job hunting, and some were abducted from poorly surveilled alleys. Thereโ€™s talk thatโ€ฆโ€

Chase snapped, โ€œOut with it.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s been a recent rise in overseas scams targeting single women and young girls. Did Mrs. Reyes ever mention anyone following her before she disappeared?โ€

I had mentioned this to him a few days earlier. When I called, his voice was impatient. He said, โ€œYouโ€™re about to be my wife. Whoโ€™s got the nerve to tail you? With the wedding right around the corner, maybe steer clear of the childrenโ€™s shelter charity for now. If youโ€™re really worried, get more bodyguards. Iโ€™m swamped.โ€

I established the charity in Chaseโ€™s name last year, leveraging his influence to raise millions for a good cause. The pandemic had severely impacted the city, leaving many children orphaned. After my miscarriage, I stepped back from work and spent much of the last three months at the childrenโ€™s shelter, caring for those orphans.

Chase believed that with a driver and occasional bodyguards, I was safe. He hadnโ€™t taken my concerns seriously.

Now, Chase regretted his dismissal. โ€œSo, there was something like this. Are you saying she was tricked by scammers? Thatโ€™s ridiculous. Amandaโ€™s lived a life of wealth. She wouldnโ€™t be fooled by small-time cons. She wouldnโ€™t fall for a scam.โ€

Suddenly, an idea struck him. โ€œGet the car ready. Weโ€™re heading to the shelter. Sheโ€™s dedicated herself to that place. Amanda must be there!โ€

He hadnโ€™t visited the shelter all year except on opening day. He always dismissed the childrenโ€™s crafts I brought him.

This was his first time entering the shelterโ€™s courtyard. It was large, mostly filled with childrenโ€™s play equipment, with flowers and plants around the edges. But he didnโ€™t pause to appreciate it, striding quickly inside.

โ€œDing-a-lingโ€ฆโ€

The seashell-decorated door curtain jingled, and laughter echoed from within.

Chaseโ€™s pace quickened, his expression intensifying. He saw a woman with her back to him, reached out to take her hand, and said, โ€œAmanda.โ€

The woman, wearing a white faux fur sweater, turned, revealing a lovely faceโ€”but it wasnโ€™t mine.

โ€œMr. Reyes?โ€

Disappointment and embarrassment clouded Chaseโ€™s eyes. โ€œSorry, I thought you were someone else. You know me?โ€

The woman smiled warmly. โ€œIโ€™m Emily. I just returned from overseas. Mr. Reyes, your reputation precedes you.โ€

Chase then remembered Emily as the third Graham daughter. She had recently returned home and was one of the potential matches his grandfather had suggested for Derek.

He quickly released her hand. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Ms. Emily, I mistook you for someone else.โ€

โ€œNo worries. Who did you think I was?โ€

Chase replied coolly, โ€œMy wife.โ€
