Chapter 49
โMr. Reyes, in all my years on the force, Iโve handled more cases than I can count. From a professional standpoint, Iโm worried Mrs. Reyes might be in trouble.โ Officer Robert felt it was his responsibility to caution Chase.
However, Chase wasnโt receptive. At the mention of trouble, he interrupted Robert, saying, โOfficer Robert, weโve had our beef, so why are you so eager to believe somethingโs wrong with my wife? Must you keep making such grim predictions?โ
โMr. Reyes, I think youโve misunderstood. Iโm just concerned about Mrs. Reyes, thatโs all.โ
Chase gave him a chilly look. โOfficer Robert, didnโt your son once have a thing for my wife? If youโre holding a grudge because he didnโt get his way, then youโre really not doing that badge of yours any justice. You keep saying somethingโs happened to her. Have you found any unidentified bodies lately?โ
Robertโs expression shifted slightly. โNo, Mr. Reyes. Iโm just trying to help, but itโs your choice whether to listen or not.โ With that, Robert turned and left. The other officers grumbled on his behalf, โCaptain, why bother talking to someone who doesnโt appreciate it?โ
Robert shrugged it off. โItโs nothing. Itโs just that my son used to be quite infatuated with her. If something did happen, Iโd worry about how heโd take it.โ
The โbratโ was his son, Anthony, who had once pursued me relentlessly in college, even threatening self-harm to win a date. Thatโs how I met Robert. Later, Robert must have intervened somehow because Anthony transferred schools before graduating, and we lost touch. Robert mentioned this briefly before discussing a missing person case they were working on.
I followed Chase to his car, watching him climb in, looking exhausted. He rubbed his temples and instructed his assistant coolly, โI donโt care how you do it. Find Amanda within three days. Also, get to the bottom of whatโs going on in Cloudville.โ
โRight away, Mr. Reyes.โ
โHold on,โ Chase suddenly said, his voice uncertain. โAlso, check if there have been any incidents involving women in the city.โ
โGot it, Mr. Reyes. But please donโt worry too much. Someone like your wife wouldnโt just vanish.โ
โYeah.โ
Ever since Chase returned to the office, heโd been out of sorts. Even when the senior team reported a slight dip in quarterly profitsโa situation usually resulting in a sharp reprimandโChase simply said, with a dazed look, โYou all did well. Letโs aim higher next quarter.โ Everyone was baffled.
โAlright, meeting adjourned,โ Chase quickly said, exiting the room and loosening his tie. He saw his assistant by his desk and asked immediately, โGot any news?โ
โYes, the person renting that place in Cloudville wasnโt Mrs. Reyes. It was a young girl named Sophie Kennedy. Hereโs her picture.โ The photo was placed before Chase. The girl resembled Amanda slightly from the side, and coincidentally, shared the surname Kennedy, causing the mix-up.
Finally, with proof in hand, Chase sighed in relief. โWhereโs Amanda?โ
The assistant shook his head. โIโve had the team check all travel records for the period. Apart from an unboarded flight, she hasnโt booked any tickets.โ
โSo, she never left. Sheโs still in town?โ Chase scoffed. โJust as I thought. Sheโs pulling a stunt to get everyoneโs attention! Amanda, youโve really let me down.โ
