Chapter 49

โ€œMr. Reyes, in all my years on the force, Iโ€™ve handled more cases than I can count. From a professional standpoint, Iโ€™m worried Mrs. Reyes might be in trouble.โ€ Officer Robert felt it was his responsibility to caution Chase.

However, Chase wasnโ€™t receptive. At the mention of trouble, he interrupted Robert, saying, โ€œOfficer Robert, weโ€™ve had our beef, so why are you so eager to believe somethingโ€™s wrong with my wife? Must you keep making such grim predictions?โ€

โ€œMr. Reyes, I think youโ€™ve misunderstood. Iโ€™m just concerned about Mrs. Reyes, thatโ€™s all.โ€

Chase gave him a chilly look. โ€œOfficer Robert, didnโ€™t your son once have a thing for my wife? If youโ€™re holding a grudge because he didnโ€™t get his way, then youโ€™re really not doing that badge of yours any justice. You keep saying somethingโ€™s happened to her. Have you found any unidentified bodies lately?โ€

Robertโ€™s expression shifted slightly. โ€œNo, Mr. Reyes. Iโ€™m just trying to help, but itโ€™s your choice whether to listen or not.โ€ With that, Robert turned and left. The other officers grumbled on his behalf, โ€œCaptain, why bother talking to someone who doesnโ€™t appreciate it?โ€

Robert shrugged it off. โ€œItโ€™s nothing. Itโ€™s just that my son used to be quite infatuated with her. If something did happen, Iโ€™d worry about how heโ€™d take it.โ€

The โ€œbratโ€ was his son, Anthony, who had once pursued me relentlessly in college, even threatening self-harm to win a date. Thatโ€™s how I met Robert. Later, Robert must have intervened somehow because Anthony transferred schools before graduating, and we lost touch. Robert mentioned this briefly before discussing a missing person case they were working on.

I followed Chase to his car, watching him climb in, looking exhausted. He rubbed his temples and instructed his assistant coolly, โ€œI donโ€™t care how you do it. Find Amanda within three days. Also, get to the bottom of whatโ€™s going on in Cloudville.โ€

โ€œRight away, Mr. Reyes.โ€

โ€œHold on,โ€ Chase suddenly said, his voice uncertain. โ€œAlso, check if there have been any incidents involving women in the city.โ€

โ€œGot it, Mr. Reyes. But please donโ€™t worry too much. Someone like your wife wouldnโ€™t just vanish.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

Ever since Chase returned to the office, heโ€™d been out of sorts. Even when the senior team reported a slight dip in quarterly profitsโ€”a situation usually resulting in a sharp reprimandโ€”Chase simply said, with a dazed look, โ€œYou all did well. Letโ€™s aim higher next quarter.โ€ Everyone was baffled.

โ€œAlright, meeting adjourned,โ€ Chase quickly said, exiting the room and loosening his tie. He saw his assistant by his desk and asked immediately, โ€œGot any news?โ€

โ€œYes, the person renting that place in Cloudville wasnโ€™t Mrs. Reyes. It was a young girl named Sophie Kennedy. Hereโ€™s her picture.โ€ The photo was placed before Chase. The girl resembled Amanda slightly from the side, and coincidentally, shared the surname Kennedy, causing the mix-up.

Finally, with proof in hand, Chase sighed in relief. โ€œWhereโ€™s Amanda?โ€

The assistant shook his head. โ€œIโ€™ve had the team check all travel records for the period. Apart from an unboarded flight, she hasnโ€™t booked any tickets.โ€

โ€œSo, she never left. Sheโ€™s still in town?โ€ Chase scoffed. โ€œJust as I thought. Sheโ€™s pulling a stunt to get everyoneโ€™s attention! Amanda, youโ€™ve really let me down.โ€
