Megan couldn’t help but roll her eyes at that. They’d gone in such a huge circle—who would’ve thought there was all this behind it?

“They talk like that even in private?”

Leonard didn’t tease her this time. He went ahead and decrypted the files on his phone.

“I did notice their conversations were extremely vague; they never mentioned anything directly.” He pulled up the message history, but then his tone shifted. “But after looking into it carefully, I can say for certain that Julian came to Millford because Tessa asked him to. That part is undeniable.”

Everyone exchanged uneasy glances, unsure how to respond. They hadn’t expected Tessa to be this cautious. She hadn’t left behind any critical traces. Even Megan sounded defeated, her tone turning weak. “Seriously, why’s Tessa being so careful? She was even guarding against Julian? Weren’t they still engaged at the time?”

But Aurora wasn’t surprised. Tessa had always been like this. She had known that all along, which was exactly why she wasn’t shocked there wasn’t anything concrete to pin on her. Still, it meant there really was no clear evidence to charge her with anything.

Leonard looked at their disappointed faces and found it oddly amusing. He chuckled and said, “Don’t give up just yet. I found something else.”

Lucas, catching on, could tell Leonard was messing with both Megan and Aurora. He gave a low warning, “Enough games. Get to the point already.”

At that, Leonard toned down the grin on his face. He cleared his throat and began to share what he had discovered.

“Around the time Lucas said Aurora was starting to wake up—right before and after Julian entered your room—I found that someone else, a stranger, had messaged Julian, urging him to act faster. She said something like ‘She can’t hold on much longer.’”

Megan immediately burst out, “Was it Tessa?”

Leonard nodded. “It was her. She tried to be careful, but the account is tied to her main one through transaction history. Even if she denies it, there’s no question that account is linked to her.”

Leonard’s lips curved slightly, the light-colored strands of hair on his head shifting with the motion. “Which means Tessa isn’t getting away this time.”

The other three lit up inside. Megan was the most obvious—she threw her arms around Aurora, practically shaking with excitement. “This is amazing, Aurora! We can finally bring that woman to justice. You were stuck in the hospital for so long, and all the while, she was living it up, even taking your place. It drove me crazy just thinking about it!”

Aurora deeply agreed with every word. They’d finally found a way in—there was no way she was letting Tessa off the hook now, especially since Tessa had made the first move. There was no one else to blame for what came next. Aurora turned to Lucas, her smile more resolute than ever. “Alright, let’s pack up and head home.”

She didn’t want to stay in this place another second. It meant nothing to her anymore. All she could think of here was the helplessness of lying in that hospital bed.
