Chapter 875
The intern asked cautiously, "Miss Walton, is something bothering you? You seem a little down."
Tessaโs heart skipped a beat. She had almost forgotten the officer was still in the room. Wearing such a troubled expression in front of him wasnโt a good look. Realizing this, she forced a smile.
โItโs nothing. I was just thinking about what the doctor said. I donโt know how long itโll take for my voice to recover.โ
Hearing that, the intern relaxed a little. It seemed like Tessa was being straightforwardโshe hadnโt overthought anything. There was no way sheโd overheard the conversation they had just outside. It was normal for a woman to worry about her voice, especially since hers used to sound so lovely. Still, the intern recalled what the doctor had said, and a trace of pity flickered in his eyes. But he offered reassurance, โDonโt worry. As long as you rest well, your vocal cords will recover eventually.โ
Tessa gave a small smile and said no more. She had no interest in chatting with this officer right now. Her mind was full of one question: Did Julian leave behind any evidence? If he did, what would she do? She had used a different account to message him, but the registration info for that account might still be tied to her. Then again, most of their conversations were vague. Anything critical had been said face-to-face. Tessa could only hope Julian hadnโt suspected anything at the time and hadnโt thought to record their conversations. Otherwise, thereโd be no way to explain it.
Forget convincing her mother, she wouldnโt even know how to ask for her forgiveness. Just as Tessa was drowning in anxiety, a sharp, urgent ringtone suddenly pulled her out of her thoughts. Tessa looked at her phone. It was a call from her mother. But she didnโt answer right away. Instead, she glanced over at the intern officer.
The officer froze for a moment, momentarily forgetting to switch out of work mode. He straightened up and cleared his throat. โWhoโs calling?โ
Though the intern did have a bit of a soft spot for Tessa, that didnโt mean he could just toss his responsibilities aside. He had a life tooโa family to support. He couldnโt afford to get too emotionally involved. That would be unrealistic. He might be an intern, but he still had to do his job. And Tessa was still a key suspect. He couldnโt forget that.
Seeing the sudden shift in the internโs demeanor, Tessa had no choice but to answer honestly. โItโs my mom. Sheโs probably calling to ask how Iโm doing.โ
The intern didnโt press further. There were no specific rules saying she couldnโt take calls. And besides, it was personalโhe didnโt want to intrude on someoneโs privacy. โGo ahead and take it.โ
After saying that, he tactfully stepped aside and kept his distance. He knew she was a young woman, calling her family, and some degree of privacy was necessary. After all, she was a suspect, nothing more. He had no right to interfere with her personal freedom.
Tessa finally relaxed a little and answered the call.
