Chapter 829
Heโd nearly given someone else another opening to strike.
Aurora could only soothe Megan in a gentle voice. โAlright, calm down, donโt get so worked up. Besides, Iโm fine now, arenโt I? Iโm sitting here chatting with you, safe and sound.โ
Megan huffed coldly, still clearly upset. โThatโs only because youโre lucky! If it werenโt for your willpower, who knows? He mightโve gotten that injection into you, and then what? You couldโve ended up in a coma again!โ
Auroraโs smile faded slightly. She had no way to argue with Meganโs words because everything she said was true. If she hadnโt fought back, the outcome would have been painfully obvious. Or worse, what if she had woken up just a little later? The thought made Aurora shiver, unable to summon the courage to imagine what could have followed.
Lucas, meanwhile, waited patiently while Megan vented. He knew that once she got it all out, there wouldnโt be much left for him to explain. As for the glare Leonard had thrown at him earlierโhe didnโt see it at all. And even if he had, he wouldnโt have cared. Leonard was just jealous, plain and simple. There was nothing else worth discussing. No matter how jealous Leonard got, it would all be pointless in the end. He couldnโt change the fact that Lucas was Auroraโs legal husband. They were the ones whose names were printed on the same household registration.
Leonard knew he was being a little emotional, but after learning the full story, how could he not be angry? It was clearly Lucasโs negligence that left Aurora alone in that hospital room. And to think, heโd made such a scene about driving them away back then! And then what? The more Leonard thought about it, the more ridiculous Lucasโ behavior seemed.
Before he could say anything, Graceโs voice came through the phone. โSo that syringeโฆ it was meant to knock her unconscious, wasnโt it?โ
No one knew how much strength it took for Grace to keep her temper in check as she said those words. She had never imagined Julian would actually do something like that. How dare he? Aurora was her daughter. And yet she had suffered all of this alone, without anyone telling her a wordโฆ
Lucas didnโt hesitate as he answered, โYes, Mom. Thatโs exactly what it was. And Iโm not trying to make excuses for myself.โ
The moment he said that, everyone turned to look at him, unsure what he meant. Why bring that up all of a sudden? Werenโt they talking about the syringe?
โWhat do you mean?โ Grace was just as confusedโwhy the sudden shift in tone?
โBecause when Julian entered the room, I wasnโt there,โ Lucas said, pausing before continuing, โMom, during that time, I was using Tessaโs phone to call you.โ
The room instantly erupted in shock. No one had expected that.
Grace was stunned, her lips trembling slightly. โIsโฆ is that true?โ
โMom, I have no reason to lie to you.โ Lucasโ voice was heavy, clearly filled with remorse. โIโve been staying in the room every single day, keeping watch by Auroraโs bedside. If it hadnโt been for that call on Tessaโs phone, I wouldnโt have left. I was just worried it might disturb Aurora."
