That made Aurora almost laugh in disbelief. “Oh? So, you do know you’re the outsider?”

Julian faltered under her mocking gaze, his bravado visibly cracking. He could still bluff his way around everyone else, but not her. Aurora knew everything. The only reason he’d dared to act so recklessly was because there weren’t any security cameras in the room. If there had been, he wouldn’t have made a move. He stood there, at a loss for words, while Aurora continued as if he hadn’t spoken.

“And that syringe on the floor? Pretty sure you brought that in. No one here ever touched it.” Her tone turned deliberately curious. “More importantly, you were planning to inject it into my body, weren’t you? I can’t help but wonder what’s actually in it.”

The second she said into my body, Lucas shot up, fists clenched. That kick from earlier had been too soft. This bastard was planning to inject her with something, and no one even knew what it was? The thought hit him like a gut punch. His chest tightened with guilt and rage. He hadn’t gotten there in time. He hadn’t protected the woman he loved. He’d left her alone with someone like Julian. And it happened just as she was waking up, making her feel all the more vulnerable.

At that thought, Lucas’ mood sank, and his whole body began to tremble slightly. Aurora was close enough to notice. She immediately understood what he meant and felt a pang of sympathy. Aurora reached out and held Lucas’ palm tightly, lightly tracing her finger across it. Lucas looked at her, and she gave him a comforting smile.
