He regretted asking the question almost as soon as it left his mouth. After all, he more or less knew Wendy’s reasons. Between women, it was always about the same kind of drama, especially with Wendy; he could guess where it stemmed from. But when it came to Judy, Kenneth was genuinely puzzled.
“Actually, I know Judy because of Aurora and Judy’s current boyfriend. There used to be something between them, so the two women ended up in a bit of a rivalry.”
Kenneth was stunned. He hadn’t expected that Lucas’ wife might have a past that wasn’t exactly spotless. She’d actually been involved in something like that? He had always assumed someone chosen by Lucas would be spotless, but apparently, there was a history there. The thought genuinely surprised him.
“Why are you smiling, bro?” Wendy gave him a confused look, not understanding why he suddenly had that goofy grin on his face like he’d lost a few brain cells.
Snapped out of it by her voice, Kenneth quickly covered up. “Oh, nothing. I wasn’t thinking anything. Just… surprised, that’s all.”
Wendy immediately understood what he meant. “I was surprised too. I mean, my Lukey is basically royalty—when has he ever had to settle for less?”
Thinking about it, Wendy grew even more resentful toward Aurora. She already had a past—so why was Lukey still so devoted to her? A woman like that should’ve been dumped long ago. He never should’ve gone for her in the first place.
Kenneth couldn’t help but find Wendy’s flustered reaction amusing. Clearly, she didn’t see things the way he did. Sure, he and Lucas had been close since childhood, but even between friends, a bit of quiet rivalry was inevitable. It came with the territory. Now that he knew Lucas’ wife wasn’t all that remarkable, he finally felt at ease. There was no need to overthink it anymore.
Wendy noticed his good mood and, thinking of the Shaws family’s future, spoke up to remind him, “Bro, we’re going to visit a patient. You might want to wipe that grin off your face. You know how Lukey is about that woman. He’s still completely smitten. I’d suggest you don’t step on a landmine today.”

Kenneth realized she had a point and straightened up slightly, focusing on parking the car properly. “Alright, I get it. We’re at the hospital. Let’s get out.”
Wendy pouted but said nothing more. Since her brother had made the decision to apologize, she wouldn’t argue. There wasn’t anything else to worry about. All she had to do was quietly follow his lead.
Kenneth grabbed a few items and gestured toward the rest in the car. “Why are you just standing there? Go grab the rest.” Wendy gave a reluctant “Okay,” but looking at all the things they’d bought for Aurora, she felt a stab of resentment. Why did that woman get everything—not just the man she loved, but now even her brother was trying to please her?
