Ding!
It was the sound of a lock clicking open.
Rachel and Yale stared at each other in shock.
It really opened!
They had guessed right.
The two of them exchanged a quick, triumphant high-five, then swiftly pulled Tylerโs company seal out of the safe and stamped it onto the contract.
Jerryโs call came through again. โRachel, are you guys done yet?โ
โWeโre done, weโre done.โ
โToo lateโeven if youโre done, Tylerโs already in the elevator. Youโd better find somewhere to hide.โ
Rachel grabbed her phone, yanked Yale by the arm, and darted into the wardrobe.
Just as she was about to close the door, Yale blurted out, โMs. Lloyd, we canโt hide here! Mr. Hunt has OCD. Every time he comes in, the first thing he does is change clothes.โ
Rachel was so anxious that her words almost tangled up. โAnd you couldnโt have said that earlier?โ
She threw open the wardrobe doors again, scanning the office. The problem was that there wasnโt anywhere else to hide.
Yale pointed to the desk across from Tylerโs.
โUnder there!โ
โThatโs pointless. Heโll see us right away.โ
โNot if he sits down. Once Mr. Hunt sits at his desk, he barely moves.โ
Rachelโs eyes went wide. โAnd if he doesnโt move, are we supposed to stay here the whole time?โ
Yale, for once, sounded confident. โYou can always message him and tell him to leave. Trust meโif itโs you, heโll listen.โ
With no better option, Rachel reluctantly agreed. The two of them squeezed under the deskโjust as the office door swung open.
As expected, Tyler walked straight in, dropped into his chair, and started gathering the files on his desk.
Then, he glanced at the clock.
He pulled out his phone and started to call Yale.
Rachel seemed to sense itโshe frantically pointed at Yaleโs phone.
Yale scrambled, fumbling to silence it, but Tylerโs call was already coming through. In the nick of time, Yale hit the mute button.
Rachel sighed in relief. Tonight felt like one long roller coaster ride. She had never been more terrified.
When Yale didnโt answer, Tyler grew suspicious and dialed Rachel instead. Her phone buzzed quietly, but she dared not pick up either.
Tylerโs expression darkened. Something wasnโt right.
At that moment, a security guard burst in. โMr. Hunt, someone reported an intruder in the building!โ
Tylerโs expression hardened. โPull the surveillance footage.โ
โYes, sir.โ
Under the desk, Rachel and Yale both froze. If Jerry hadnโt managed to disable the cameras, everything they had done would be exposed!
โIs the surveillance taken care of?โ Yale mouthed desperately.
Rachel shook her headโshe didnโt know. In the rush to beat Tyler here, she had completely forgotten to ask Jerry about the cameras.
Yaleโs eyes went wide. He spread his hands, gesturing wildly that he was ready to bolt right then and there.
Rachel yanked him back down before he could move.
โWhat are you doing?โ she mouthed.
Yale jabbed at her phone, mouthing that she should text him.
Rachel quickly typed a reply. [Iโm not sure about the surveillance. But donโt panicโif you crawl out now, youโre walking straight into a trap.]
Yale typed back so fast his sweaty palms nearly dropped the phone. For a terrifying second, it slipped from his handโuntil Rachel snatched it midair just before it hit the floor.
The two of them locked eyes, relief flooding through them.
Then the guard returned.
โMr. Hunt, the footage is ready.โ
Rachel and Yaleโs hearts clenched. If Jerry hadnโt done his part, then everything they had risked was about to go up in smoke.
Tyler clenched his jaw tightly.
โWell?โ
