Chapter 643
But if she agreed to Tyler now, what about the proposal in her hands? Her schedule was already tight.
With Yvette having just been taken in, Rachel needed to follow up on that immediately. If Yvette managed to find a way out, all the time and effort she had invested would go to waste. She couldnโt afford to fail at this stage.
Jerry, standing to the side, seemed to notice Rachelโs hesitation and spoke up on his own.
โMr. Hunt, if youโre too tired, you could take a sleeping pill. I have some in my bag.โ
Tyler turned his head, glancing past Rachel. His eyes instinctively locked onto Jerry, and Rachel could practically smell the hostility in the air.
She repeatedly gave Jerry warning looks. Normally, he would have understood and held back. But today, for reasons she couldnโt quite place, Jerry was clearly emotionalโand she didnโt know why.
Tylerโs voice came out cold.
โI have a girlfriend to lull me to sleep. Why would I need sleeping pills?โ
It was a blunt, cutting retort.
Jerryโs lips pressed into a tight line. Combined with his usual air of roguish defiance, he looked like an untamed beastโone that had restrained itself only because of Rachelโs presence.
But now Tyler had openly challenged him, and Jerryโs gaze was brimming with hostility.
โEven so, you canโt interfere with Rachelโs work. Sheโs already exhausted these past few days.โ
Tyler shifted his gaze back to Rachel, a thoughtful gleam in his eyes. He smiled as his fingers hooked around a strand of her hair, twirling it between them.
โOh, and precisely because sheโs exhausted, I need to take care of her.โ
His tone was laced with insinuation, leaving little room to mistake his meaning.
Rachelโs face flushed red. For a moment, she almost wanted to clamp a hand over his mouth.
She leaned close and whispered in his ear, โTyler, shouldnโt you be heading to bed now?โ
Tyler raised a brow, a sly look appearing on his face. โSee? That wasnโt so hard.โ
Rachel supported him toward the bedroom, but halfway there, she suddenly remembered something.
โIโm just going to step out for a glass of water.โ
As she stepped outside, she spotted Yale reclining on the sofa with his eyes half-closed. At the sound of her footsteps, he opened his eyes.
Rachel gave him a look.
Yale immediately got up from the sofa and followed her out onto the balcony. Before she stepped out, Rachel pointed Jerry toward the bedroom, signaling for him to keep watch. If Tyler came out, Jerry was to alert them right away.
Jerry understood at once and gestured an โOKโ with his hand.
Rachel leaned gently against the balcony railing, her face showing clear traces of weariness. โHowโs your company holding up right now?โ
โThose overseas projects, theyโre your work, arenโt they, Ms. Lloyd? Iโve read them over. The proposals are excellent. Flawless, really,โ Yale said.
Rachelโs eyes lit up at his words. โSo does that mean Tyler has already signed off on them?โ
Yaleโs mood suddenly dimmed. โItโs precisely because theyโre too flawless that he hasnโt signed. He actually suspects there might be a trap hidden in them.โ
Rachel pressed a hand to her forehead, speechless. โTyler and his paranoia. I get that sometimes itโs useful, but honestly, there are times when he takes caution way too far.โ
Tyler wasnโt like ordinary cautious people. If even the slightest doubt formed in his mind, he would dig relentlessly until he unearthed the whole truth and leave nothing behind.
Rachel tapped her fingertips lightly against the balcony railing. โWhat worries me is that if this suspicion of his keeps up, he really will uncover something.โ
Yale finally came up with a suggestion.
โMy advice, Ms. Lloyd, is to start preparing countermeasures against Mr. Huntโs investigation. As for some of the trickier points, I might be able to help smooth things over.โ
