Chapter 275: Feelings Are Heavy
There was silence for a few seconds. โProject?โ
Under Juliaโs suspicious gaze, Summer kept a straight face. โYes, Iโll arrange for a colleague to handle that tonight.โ
Fraser seemed to catch on quickly, his deep, lazy chuckle sending a jolt through the phone. โTonight, just send yourself instead.โ
Summerโs face instantly burned bright red. โTonight is too rushedโฆ Tomorrowโฆ Tomorrow might work better.โ
Fraser raised his eyebrows. โShould I pick you up after work, honey?โ
Summer clutched the phone even tighter. โNot tonight. Maybe next week?โ
โPick you up for a movie?โ
Summer stammered, โThenโฆ next month.โ
Fraserโs lips curled wickedly. โAnd after the movie, bed?โ
Summer squeezed her eyes shut. She couldnโt handle this anymore! โWhenever suits your schedule!โ she quickly ended the call.
Finally, her heartbeat began returning to normalโฆ
Under Juliaโs increasingly doubtful stare, Summer calmly said, โMom, I have a meeting soon. Why donโt you head home first?โ
Julia finally remembered what sheโd come for. โSummer, howโs your search for Stewart Groupโs new manager going?โ
Summer suddenly recalled Lucasโs recommendationโshe still hadnโt met him yet.
Julia continued, โYour aunt already found a suitable house for us. The price is reasonable, around 25 million dollarsโa small three-story house with a garden, perfect for us, the baby, and a few housekeepers.โ
When Julia didnโt hear Summerโs reply, she noticed her daughter frowning, lost in thought. โSummer, whatโs wrong?โ
โSoon? Not at all. Weโre leaving Havenbrook by the end of next month. Your belly will start showing soon. Itโll cause unnecessary gossip.โ
Summer thought briefly, then nodded. โIโll transfer you the money.โ
Julia waved her hand dismissively. โI have enough money for the house. I just wanted to remind you not to waste time.โ
After finishing their talk, Julia left to meet some friends for afternoon tea. Summer leaned back in her chair, looking out the window, thoughts swirling around Juliaโs words.
Eventually, she picked up her phone and dialed Lucasโs number.
An hour later, her assistant knocked gently at the door. โMs. Summer, someoneโs here to see you.โ
Summer stood immediately. โPlease let them in.โ
The office door opened, and Lucas walked in with a sharply dressed manโPeyton, the professional manager Lucas had recommended. Summer paused briefly, surprised to see Lucas had come along personally.
Lucas introduced them, โThis is Ms. Summer, General Manager of Stewart Group. And this is Peyton, who has over 20 years of experience in corporate management.โ
Summer gestured politely to the seating area. โMr. Lucas, Mr. Peyton, please sit.โ Summer sat opposite Lucas and Peyton.
The meeting went smoothly. Lucas facilitated the discussion, highlighting Peytonโs experience and expertise clearly to Summer. Summer found Peytonโs business philosophy and experience aligned perfectly with Stewart Groupโs needs.
Near the end of the meeting, Peyton stood and shook Summerโs hand politely. โIt was a pleasure meeting you today, Ms. Summer, Mr. Lucas. I hope weโll have the chance to work together.โ
Summer smiled warmly. โIt was my pleasure, Mr. Peyton.โ
After her assistant escorted Peyton out, Summer and Lucas were left alone in the office.
โPeyton has extensive business management experience. Most importantly, heโs local to Havenbrookโheโd be a stable and reliable choice for your company.โ
Summer had thought the same thing. โThank you again, Mr. Lucas. Youโve helped me out again.โ
โSummer,โ Lucas spoke suddenly.
She took a small sip of tea. โHm?โ
โAbout last nightโฆโ
Summerโs fingers tightened around her teacup. Lucas softly apologized, โIโm sorry I couldnโt comfort you properly.โ
Summer placed her cup down, speaking sincerely, โMr. Lucas, you already saved me last night. Without you, I wouldnโt be here today.โ
Lucas gazed gently at her. โBut to you, Iโm still just โMr. Lucas.โโ
Summer voiced the question lingering in her heart. โWhy do you like me? We havenโt known each other that long.โ
Lucasโs lips curved gently. โLiking someone is just a feeling. If I said youโre the only one for me, you probably wouldnโt believe it right now. But Summer, I want you to knowโI donโt mind that youโre pregnant. If youโd let me, Iโd like to take care of you both.โ
This affection felt unbearably heavy.
