Chapter 275: Feelings Are Heavy

There was silence for a few seconds. โ€œProject?โ€

Under Juliaโ€™s suspicious gaze, Summer kept a straight face. โ€œYes, Iโ€™ll arrange for a colleague to handle that tonight.โ€

Fraser seemed to catch on quickly, his deep, lazy chuckle sending a jolt through the phone. โ€œTonight, just send yourself instead.โ€

Summerโ€™s face instantly burned bright red. โ€œTonight is too rushedโ€ฆ Tomorrowโ€ฆ Tomorrow might work better.โ€

Fraser raised his eyebrows. โ€œShould I pick you up after work, honey?โ€

Summer clutched the phone even tighter. โ€œNot tonight. Maybe next week?โ€

โ€œPick you up for a movie?โ€

Summer stammered, โ€œThenโ€ฆ next month.โ€

Fraserโ€™s lips curled wickedly. โ€œAnd after the movie, bed?โ€

Summer squeezed her eyes shut. She couldnโ€™t handle this anymore! โ€œWhenever suits your schedule!โ€ she quickly ended the call.

Finally, her heartbeat began returning to normalโ€ฆ

Under Juliaโ€™s increasingly doubtful stare, Summer calmly said, โ€œMom, I have a meeting soon. Why donโ€™t you head home first?โ€

Julia finally remembered what sheโ€™d come for. โ€œSummer, howโ€™s your search for Stewart Groupโ€™s new manager going?โ€

Summer suddenly recalled Lucasโ€™s recommendationโ€”she still hadnโ€™t met him yet.

Julia continued, โ€œYour aunt already found a suitable house for us. The price is reasonable, around 25 million dollarsโ€”a small three-story house with a garden, perfect for us, the baby, and a few housekeepers.โ€

When Julia didnโ€™t hear Summerโ€™s reply, she noticed her daughter frowning, lost in thought. โ€œSummer, whatโ€™s wrong?โ€

โ€œSoon? Not at all. Weโ€™re leaving Havenbrook by the end of next month. Your belly will start showing soon. Itโ€™ll cause unnecessary gossip.โ€

Summer thought briefly, then nodded. โ€œIโ€™ll transfer you the money.โ€

Julia waved her hand dismissively. โ€œI have enough money for the house. I just wanted to remind you not to waste time.โ€

After finishing their talk, Julia left to meet some friends for afternoon tea. Summer leaned back in her chair, looking out the window, thoughts swirling around Juliaโ€™s words.

Eventually, she picked up her phone and dialed Lucasโ€™s number.

An hour later, her assistant knocked gently at the door. โ€œMs. Summer, someoneโ€™s here to see you.โ€

Summer stood immediately. โ€œPlease let them in.โ€

The office door opened, and Lucas walked in with a sharply dressed manโ€”Peyton, the professional manager Lucas had recommended. Summer paused briefly, surprised to see Lucas had come along personally.

Lucas introduced them, โ€œThis is Ms. Summer, General Manager of Stewart Group. And this is Peyton, who has over 20 years of experience in corporate management.โ€

Summer gestured politely to the seating area. โ€œMr. Lucas, Mr. Peyton, please sit.โ€ Summer sat opposite Lucas and Peyton.

The meeting went smoothly. Lucas facilitated the discussion, highlighting Peytonโ€™s experience and expertise clearly to Summer. Summer found Peytonโ€™s business philosophy and experience aligned perfectly with Stewart Groupโ€™s needs.

Near the end of the meeting, Peyton stood and shook Summerโ€™s hand politely. โ€œIt was a pleasure meeting you today, Ms. Summer, Mr. Lucas. I hope weโ€™ll have the chance to work together.โ€

Summer smiled warmly. โ€œIt was my pleasure, Mr. Peyton.โ€

After her assistant escorted Peyton out, Summer and Lucas were left alone in the office.

โ€œPeyton has extensive business management experience. Most importantly, heโ€™s local to Havenbrookโ€”heโ€™d be a stable and reliable choice for your company.โ€

Summer had thought the same thing. โ€œThank you again, Mr. Lucas. Youโ€™ve helped me out again.โ€

โ€œSummer,โ€ Lucas spoke suddenly.

She took a small sip of tea. โ€œHm?โ€

โ€œAbout last nightโ€ฆโ€

Summerโ€™s fingers tightened around her teacup. Lucas softly apologized, โ€œIโ€™m sorry I couldnโ€™t comfort you properly.โ€

Summer placed her cup down, speaking sincerely, โ€œMr. Lucas, you already saved me last night. Without you, I wouldnโ€™t be here today.โ€

Lucas gazed gently at her. โ€œBut to you, Iโ€™m still just โ€˜Mr. Lucas.โ€™โ€

Summer voiced the question lingering in her heart. โ€œWhy do you like me? We havenโ€™t known each other that long.โ€

Lucasโ€™s lips curved gently. โ€œLiking someone is just a feeling. If I said youโ€™re the only one for me, you probably wouldnโ€™t believe it right now. But Summer, I want you to knowโ€”I donโ€™t mind that youโ€™re pregnant. If youโ€™d let me, Iโ€™d like to take care of you both.โ€

This affection felt unbearably heavy.
