Chapter 140: The Aftermath
In the hospital, Summer slowly opened her eyes as she lay on the hospital bed. Julia stood beside her, dabbing at her tears with a silk handkerchief. โSummer, how are you feeling? You scared me to death.โ
Summerโs voice was hoarse. โWhereโฆ am I?โ
โYou were kidnapped and fell off a cliff. Trevor was injured trying to rescue you. Luckily, the bodyguards arrived in time and saved you both.โ
Summerโs mind slowly pieced together the memories. The last thing I remembered was Trevor trying to pull me up and the kidnapper hitting him with a wooden plank. The maid, Leona, helped Summer to sit up.
โMs. Stewart, youโve been unconscious for a day. Madam was worried sick. Letโs give you some porridge.โ
Summerโs body ached as if it had been shattered. Julia picked up the bowl of porridge to feed her. Summer looked at the offered spoon and pursed her lips. โLet Leonaโฆ do it. You can go back.โ
Juliaโs eyes reddened. She wanted to stay, but she was afraid that Summer would find her annoying. In the end, she left Leona to take care of Summer.
Two days later, there was a knock on the door of the hospital room. A nurse wheeled in Trevor, who was sitting in a wheelchair. Summerโs expression remained calm when she saw Trevor. His arm was in a sling, his leg was wrapped in bandages, and his face had several scars. He looked emaciated.
Trevor asked the nurse to leave. โSummer, are youโฆ okay?โ
Trevor had rushed to see her as soon as he woke up. Despite his multiple fractures, he had come as soon as he could sit up. Summer calmly replied, โThanks to you. Iโm not dead.โ
Seeing that Summer was still able to reply, Trevor smiled, even though the movement tore at his wounds and made him wince in pain. Summer put down the sketchbook in her hands.
โIโve been kidnapped twice because of you, so I wonโt feel guilty. You can leave now.โ
Trevor frowned. He thought that Summer was referring to the time when he didnโt choose her. Trevor said painfully, โI didnโt mean to not choose you back then.โ
โJust make sure your crazy wife doesnโt come after me again. She was involved in this kidnapping.โ
Trevorโs jaw clenched as if he couldnโt believe what he was hearing. โPeyton wouldnโt do such a thingโฆโ
โBelieve what you want.โ Summer shut him out completely. โPlease leave, Mr. Larson. I need to rest.โ
Trevor gave her a deep look before slowly turning his wheelchair and leaving. Whether Peyton was involved or not, I had to get to the bottom of this.
A while later, the door to the hospital room opened again. Summer frowned, thinking that Trevor had returned to bother her. โWhy are you back?โ
She looked up to see a tall, imposing figure standing at the door. The man was wearing a cool gray shirt, its simple design with the top two buttons undone. His long legs were clad in black dress pants. He stood against the light, and Summer couldnโt see his face clearly. But she could sense his noble bearing, his sharp, dark eyes cold and distant.
Summer blinked, surprised to see him. Her hand loosened, and the sketchbook fell from the bed. Fraser stepped in, his expression indifferent. He bent down, picked up the sketchbook, and put it back into her hands.
โWhat, not happy to see me?โ
Summer pursed her lips. โWhen did youโฆ get back?โ
Fraserโs calm gaze fixed on the woman in the hospital bed, his voice emotionless. โA few days ago.โ
โWhen I heard that Summer was waiting for me on the phone. I had compressed a week-long trip to the Ameros into three days just to surprise her. From the moment I boarded the plane to the moment I landed, I didnโt rest and instructed the driver to go straight to Brookhaven Estates. When I arrived at her place, she wasnโt there, and her phone was unanswered after hundreds of calls. Who would have thought that to see my girlfriend, Iโd have to send someone to investigate?โ
Fraser frowned. โWhy didnโt you tell me!โ
His proximity was overwhelming. The scent of pine and a hint of tobacco filled her senses.
Summer bit her lip. โIt was just a small matter. I didnโt want to bother you.โ
