Chapter 349
When worrying news arrived, doctors and nurses rushed to the ward. The physician quickly administered oxygen and pressure to Sienna, instructing the nurses to start an IV. "Visitors, please step outside! Do not interfere with our emergency procedures!"
Josiah and Cedric were escorted from the room, standing silently. The incessant beeping of the monitoring machines filled the air, fueling Josiah's anxiety and leaving him shivering. He was overwhelmed by conflicting emotions. Why had Sienna seemed so eager to avoid him?
Twenty minutes later, the doctor emerged. Josiah and Cedric immediately stood, asking in unison, "How is she?"
"She's stable now," the doctor replied. "The distress was caused by overwhelming emotions; the patient is very fragile and cannot handle more stress. Visiting is not allowed for now. Please go home for the night and return tomorrow. Nurses are monitoring her condition, so don't worry."
"Thank you. We appreciate your hard work," they said. After the doctor left, Josiah and Cedric exchanged serious looks, but neither moved to leave.
Cedric's phone buzzed; he declined the call. Josiah let out a faint, cold chuckle. "Is your family urging you to return? Why are you still here?"
Cedric met Josiah's gaze. "As long as you are here, I will not leave. I won't let you hurt Sienna anymore." Despite the doctor's instructions, he knew Josiah was powerful and unstoppable.
Josiah's lips tightened. His phone rangโit was Howard. Wondering about Yvette's surgery, Josiah answered. "Howard?"
"Yvette's out of surgery." Josiah paused. "I'm coming." After hanging up, he glanced at the door and at Cedric before leaving.
Cedric stood in shock. His phone buzzed again. Frowning, he answered, "Momโฆ I'll head back now." Looking back at the ward door, Cedric put away his phone. Since visitation wasn't allowed, he decided to go home and return early the next morning. Before leaving, he gave his contact number to the nurse's station. "Please let me know immediately if there are any updates about Sienna."
Yvette, seriously injured in the accident, had been taken directly to the ICU. She remained unconscious after surgery. For Josiah, this was another terrible blow; his already gloomy expression deepened into despair. His fists clenched and shook uncontrollably, the name "Andy" escaping his lips in a guttural whisper of hate.
Howard had just received an update from Zach. While Yvette's injuries weren't directly caused by Andy, it was clear that without Andy's planned kidnapping, she wouldn't be in this state. Seeing his brother's grim face, Howard realized Josiah was overwhelmed by the night's eventsโSienna's near-death experience and Yvette's serious injuries.
"By the way," Howard asked, "How is Sienna? Is she okay?"
Josiah shook his head. "Not well." The image of Sienna's resuscitation haunted him.
Howard noticed something amiss. "How did the dock catch fire? Any police updates?"
"None," Josiah replied, shaking his head. "It's still under investigation." Suddenly, his expression froze, his body tensing. He blurted out, "It's Andy!"
"What?" Howard was startled. Josiah's statement raised suspicions, but his mind was still unclear. "Why? What does he want?"
"I don't know," Josiah said, his face darkening. "He's a lunatic! Who can understand his motives? But he's involved!" Sienna and Yvette had both been kidnapped, and Andy had misled him about their locations. Then there was the fire at the eastern district cargo dock. "It's Andy! It has to be him!"
Josiah's lips tightened, hatred flashing in his eyes. "I'm going to find him and settle this score!" He turned to leave.
Josiah and Howard couldn't stop him; worry creased Howard's brow. He silently lamented, "Will Josiah be able to escape the Evans family's grasp?"
Josiah hadn't expected to return to the Evans residence after more than a decadeโthis place felt like purgatory. Inside, Andy carefully tended his plants. Ethan approached, carrying a document pouch.
"Has the result come in?" Andy asked, raising his hand.
Ethan handed him the sealed pouch. Andy took it, and Ethan produced a letter opener. Despite the late hour, Andy hadn't gone to bed; he'd been waiting for this report.
Andy leisurely opened the envelope. The report spanned three pages. He skipped to the last page.
[Sample A and Sample B show a DNA match of 99.99%, confirming a biological father-son relationship.]
A flicker of emotion crossed Andy's eyes; his mouth curved upward as he closed his eyes. "Good, very good." His voice rose with joy.
Ethan leaned closer. "Mr. Evans, this is huge! You've finally found your true heir!"
Joy spread across Andy's face. He'd had six sons and three daughters, and grandchildren, but none had shown promise. Only his youngest son, Edgar, who had wandered far from home, had stood out.
"Mr. Evans," Ethan added eagerly, "When will you bring Edgar home?"
Andy was about to answer when the butler approached. "Mr. Evans, Edgar has arrived. Shall I let him in?"
Andy and Ethan exchanged glances, smiles widening. "Speak of the devil," Andy instructed the butler. "Show him in!" His timing couldn't be more perfect.
Ethan grinned. "It seems you and Edgar truly share a bond."
Andy laughed. Soon, a voice shouted, "Andy!" Josiah entered, his face radiating intense fury.
