Chapter 243
โSienna,โ Josiah interrupted, frowning. His lips tightened, betraying his displeasure.
โNot happy?โ Siennaโs eyebrows arched. โIsnโt that the truth? You were injured because of your sweetheart; she should be the one worrying about you.โ
โEnough. Stop talking about sweethearts,โ Josiah said coldly, suppressing his irritation. โHow many times must I tell you? Thereโs nothing between Yvette and me. Last night, it was only because of Howardโฆโ
โReally?โ Sienna smiled, her eyes flashing. โPerhaps youโre in love without knowing it?โ
Josiah hesitated. โSiennaโฆโ
A knock sounded on the ward door. A nurse entered with a treatment cart. โMr. Flynn, itโs time for your afternoon infusion.โ
Josiah stared sullenly at Sienna, silent. Sienna stepped back to give the nurse room. โThank you for your hard work.โ
โYouโre welcome, Ms. Shaw,โ the nurse replied, smiling as she administered the IV. โItโs done. If you need anything, call the nursesโ station or press the call bell.โ
Sienna nodded. โOkay, thank you.โ
โYouโre welcome.โ The nurse left, and silence settled over the ward.
The interruption brought a pause. Sienna didnโt resume their previous conversation. She pulled up a chair, sat, glanced at the IV bag, and murmured, โThis will take at least half an hour.โ She yawned widely, tears welling uncontrollably. She wiped them away.
Josiah noticed. His earlier displeasure faded. โAre you sleepy?โ
โYes,โ Sienna nodded, yawning again. โIโm sleepy. I only slept three hours last night, and I went to the dance troupe early this morning.โ She felt sleep pressing down on her.
Josiah glanced at his large hospital bed. โSienna, come hereโฆโ
The door opened again. Zach entered. โWhatโs the matter?โ Josiahโs unhappy expression deepened; he hadnโt expected Zachโs visit.
Zach froze, a chill running down his spine. Mr. Flynn is giving me the death stare, he thought. He quickly said, โMr. Flynn, I wondered if Sienna wanted to go back and get you someโฆโ
Zachโs thoughtfulness was genuine. Josiah would be hospitalized for several days. While hospital supplies were available, his own thingsโunderwear, a razorโwere more comfortable. Even Sienna hadnโt considered this; Zach usually handled such things, but as mistress of Silver Beach, the responsibility now fell to her.
โYouโre right. Thatโs thoughtful,โ Sienna agreed. โIโll go back; I know where everything is.โ
โYes,โ Zach nodded.
Sienna stood. โIโll leave this to you. Iโll go back and pack.โ
โZaid is downstairs,โ Zach said. โHeโll drive you back.โ
โOkay, thanks,โ Sienna replied.
โSienna,โ Josiah called as she turned to leave.
She looked back. He stared at her. โYouโll be back, right?โ
Sienna paused, then laughed. โOf course. I have to bring you your things.โ
โOkay,โ Josiah smiled. โBe careful and come back soon.โ
โOkay.โ Sienna waved and left the ward.
The moment the door closed, Josiah felt a sudden, inexplicable panic and worry. He feared she would leave and never return.
Sienna exited the ward and joined Zaid in the car. As they passed a grove, she saw Howard and Yvette through the window, seemingly in conversation. The car quickly drove away.
In the grove, Yvette stood with her back to Howard, her eyes red.
โVette,โ Howard said, one hand on his cane, the other holding a handkerchief. โDonโt cry. Itโs all my fault. If youโre unhappy, take it out on me.โ
โTake it out on you?โ Yvette looked up, glaring. โFine, Iโll ask directly. The child is three. Where is his mother? You keep him with Hervey. Where is she?โ
โThereโs no other woman,โ Howard said, frowning. A beautiful face flashed in his mind. He hardened his heart and stated firmly, โThereโs no other woman.โ
โWhat?โ Yvette was stunned, then scoffed. โDo you think Iโm a fool? No other woman? Did you give birth to the child?โ
โThatโs not what I meant,โ Howard shook his head. โI acknowledge the child. As for his mother, I donโt know who she is, and I donโt intend to have anything to do with her.โ
Yvette stared intently at him. โAre you serious?โ
โYes,โ Howard said, his dark eyes fixed on hers. He gently wiped away her tears. โThe child was an accident. His mother is a stranger to me. Why would I abandon you for her?โ
Yvetteโs tears flowed anew.
โWhatโs wrong?โ Howard asked, startled. โWhy are you crying again?โ
โHoward,โ Yvette sobbed, clinging to him. โYou said it. You promised. Donโt lie. Please, donโt lie to me again.โ
Howard lowered his head, gazing at her, sighing softly. He embraced her. โYes, I said it. I wonโt lie to you.โ
Yvette cried uncontrollably. โHoward, I canโt live without you. Youโre the only one I have.โ Howard replied softly, โI know.โ
Back at Silver Beach, Sienna packed a suitcase with Josiahโs clothes and toiletries. She carried it downstairs and gave it to Zaid. โZaid, thank you.โ
