Seeing Ron’s desperation, Keira moved to leave again, but he pressed the door shut, blocking her way.

Keira didn’t return to the courtyard right away. Since she was already out, she decided to stroll around for a bit.

For the past few days, she hadn’t been able to stop thinking about Nina. Sasha had mentioned bringing her over to see her on the weekend, but she never did. Keira had sent her a message to ask, and her reply was vague: she claimed it wasn’t convenient because of her pregnancy.

Something didn’t sit right with her, so she went to Nina’s school. To her surprise, her teacher informed her that she had transferred schools some time ago.

“Why did Nina transfer schools? Where is she now?” Keira asked sharply.

“You went to her school? Why didn’t you tell me beforehand?” Sasha sounded groggy, like she had just woken up, yawning repeatedly.

Keira didn’t entertain her excuses and pressed again, “I’m asking you—where is Nina?”

“She’s at school. I’ll send you the address. Today’s a parent-child day, and there’s a lunch event at noon. I was too tired to go, so…” She trailed off, casually offloading the responsibility onto Keira before hanging up.

A moment later, Keira received a text with the location of a kindergarten.

Her indifference made her even more worried about Nina.

Keira drove to the kindergarten. When she arrived, she was only allowed in after a quick video call to confirm her identity with Nina.

The moment she saw her, Nina’s first words were, “Sister, I thought you didn’t like me anymore and had forgotten about me.”

“No, not at all. I’ve just been very busy. I’m sorry I’m late,” Keira said, crouching to her level and offering her a small gift she’d brought.

But Nina wasn’t particularly interested in the gift. Keira didn’t need to guess—Sasha had probably been using gifts to make up for her own lack of presence in Nina’s life.

“How about this? I will stay with you today, and we’ll have lunch together,” Keira suggested gently.

She froze for a second, then muttered, “Is it because my mom didn’t have time again?”

Her disappointment and resignation broke Keira’s heart.

“No, it’s because I wanted to come see you,” Keira reassured her. “I asked your mom to let me have this chance. But if you want her here, I can call her.”

Nina shook her head and grabbed Keira’s hand tightly. “I want you to stay with me.”

Keira squeezed her little hand and whispered, “Thank you.” Then she leaned closer and added with a smile, “You know, I’ve always wanted to try the food at your kindergarten. They never let me before, but today I finally get the chance!”

Hearing that, Nina giggled and whispered back, “Don’t eat the tomato and egg stir-fry—it’s awful.”

Keira laughed. “Got it. Do you have drumsticks? I love drumsticks.”

She nodded eagerly. “Take the big ones. The small ones aren’t enough for you.”

Just a few words, and Nina was already smiling and warming up to her again.

Keira spent the rest of the morning playing games with her before lunch, and they ate together at the kindergarten. It wasn’t until her nap time that she finally prepared to leave.

As she was saying goodbye, Nina’s eyes were filled with reluctance.

“How about this? When the weekend comes and you don’t have school, I’ll come pick you up, okay?” Keira suggested, letting her place her small hand on her belly. “There’s a little baby in here. In a few months, you’ll get to meet them and play together.”

Her eyes sparkled with excitement. “Sister, you’re having a baby? I’m going to have a little brother or sister?”

Keira chuckled at her enthusiasm. “Yes, that’s right.”

Nina’s delight was contagious, even if her titles for the baby were a little jumbled.

After leaving the kindergarten, Keira finally checked her phone. There were missed calls and messages from Hayden.
