Chapter 55

Edward mused, "That damn Rosalie has been spoiled rotten since she was a kid. The only person she ever acts decent around is Julian. If a brat like her ever found out that I cheated on Bella while she was pregnant, had a daughter behind Bella’s back, and kept it from Rosalie for over a decade, she wouldn’t just throw a tantrum. She’d tear the whole damn house down. There’s no way she’d settle for just throwing a few sharp words at dinner."

Claudia, pondering, agreed. "That little bitch Rosalie is an absolute menace. If she ever finds out I was the mistress who took her mother’s place, she’ll never let me live it down.”

Claudia asked, her teeth grinding in frustration, "Then what the hell was her problem tonight? She’s always been polite to me before, but the second she steps through the door today, she’s got her claws out, spitting venom at every turn."

"If it weren’t for her nasty mouth, would Helena have been so upset that she fainted?"

"It’s just not fair to Helena," Claudia continued, her voice trembling with resentment, her eyes welling up. "She’s your daughter too, yet she always has to walk on eggshells around Rosalie. Why should she have to live in Rosalie’s shadow?"

Edward had always been weak to Claudia’s tears. He was, after all, a man who’d always been more comfortable living off others. Bella, George’s eldest daughter, had always been domineering, making Edward feel inadequate.

But with Claudia, things were different. He finally felt like a man—needed, relied upon, someone strong enough to protect the woman he loved. Claudia was always gentle and sweet, always looking to him for help. She made him feel valued.

That was why, even after all these years, his heart still belonged to her. It was also why he doted on Helena and Riley, giving them everything they wanted. But every time he looked at Rosalie, all he could think of were those humiliating years under Bella’s thumb. If it weren’t for the 40% shares Rosalie held, he would’ve cut ties with her long ago.

Edward exhaled sharply. "Claudia, don’t worry. I’ll make things right for Helena. Everything I have will belong to Helena and Riley in the future. I won’t let them suffer."
