Chapter 54
Edward and Claudia, though not doctors, understood that a successful surgery, preventing Helena's transplant rejection, would offer her a new lease on life. Edward's eyes narrowed. "Is there really such a procedure?"
Barney replied, "Not yet. But since Dr. Rotello has already published a paper on it, I believe it's only a matter of time before this surgical method becomes a reality. When that happens, it'll be an opportunity for Ms. Graham." He hesitated, glancing at Edward and Claudia's hopeful faces. He couldn't bring himself to tell them the truth—that almost no one knew Dr. Rotello, let alone had met her. Even papers attributed to her were published under her assistant's name. And even if Dr. Rotello did one day perform such a surgery, securing her services for Helena was another matter entirely.
Claudia clutched Edward's hand. "Edward, when the time comes, you have to make sure Helena gets Dr. Rotello."
Edward's expression hardened. "Don't worry. No matter the cost, I'll make sure Dr. Rotello treats Helena." Barney gave them a complicated look but remained silent. If Dr. Rotello were easily found, he wouldn't have spent years chasing rumors and dead ends.
After seeing Barney off, Edward and Claudia returned to the living room, the atmosphere heavy with their lingering thoughts on Rosalie's bizarre behavior. Neither looked pleased.
Claudia broke the silence. "Edward, do you think Rosalie knows?" Her fingers clenched, her voice laced with unease. She feared Rosalie had discovered the truth—that Bella had barely been pregnant before Edward and Claudia's relationship began. It wasn't a glorious past, so Claudia avoided stating it directly. But Edward understood.
His face darkened, then he shook his head. "No. If she knew, with her temper, she wouldn't have just thrown a few words at us and left. It wouldn't have been that simple."
