Chapter 0039

Hannah

I led Drake to the bar, my heels clicking decisively on the marble floor. A part of me felt like I was betraying Noah, despite his unreasonable jealousy. He has no right to be jealous, I thought; he's the one pining after his ex-girlfriend.

Still, I pushed those thoughts aside as I claimed two empty stools, gesturing for Drake to sit beside me. The bartender materialized almost instantly.

โ€œWhat can I get for you, Alpha Drake?โ€ he asked.

โ€œIโ€™ll have a whiskey, neat,โ€ Drake replied coolly, then looked at me. โ€œAnd for you, Luna Hannahโ€ฆ?โ€

My lips twitched. โ€œJust water for me, thanks.โ€

Drake blinked, seemingly surprised, but didn't question it as the bartender filled our orders. An awkward silence fell, one I felt compelled to break.

โ€œAhโ€ฆ I spoke with Zoe, as I said I would.โ€

Drakeโ€™s eyes sharpened. โ€œOh? And what did my darling wife have to say?โ€

I hesitated, pinning him with a measured look as I considered my response. Finally, I opted for the truthโ€”or some version of it, at least.

โ€œShe wasnโ€™t keen on seeing you, or letting you see Adam, Iโ€™ll be honest. She saidโ€ฆโ€ My brow furrowed as I carefully chose my words. โ€œShe said you were unfaithful, Drake. Multiple times, withโ€ฆ other women.โ€

To his credit, Drake didnโ€™t flinch. He merely sipped his whiskey, his gaze impassive.

โ€œI see,โ€ he said after a long pause.

I arched a brow at his nonchalant reaction. โ€œIs it true, then? What she said?โ€

โ€œDoes it matter if itโ€™s true or not?โ€ he asked with an idle shrug. โ€œClearly, Zoe has made up her mind about me either way.โ€

Letting out a humorless puff of air, I shook my head. โ€œYouโ€™re unbelievable. Do you honestly think for even a minute that I believe a word that comes out of your mouth?โ€

Drake froze, seemingly shocked by my words; and truthfully, I was shocked by my candor. But I was tired of keeping my mouth shut, of being the demure Luna who never spoke her mind.

But, much to my surprise, Drakeโ€™s lips curved into a smile. โ€œYouโ€™re a lot like your husband,โ€ he said.

I bristled. โ€œIโ€™m nothing like him.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t mean offense,โ€ Drake replied. โ€œItโ€™s just that both of you are brutally honest. I like that.โ€

Honest, I thought. Yeah, right. Noah was anything but honest. โ€œYeah, well, maybe you could take a page out of my book,โ€ I retorted. โ€œAnd stop cheating on your wife.โ€

Drake sighed. โ€œI know I fucked up, okay?โ€ he said, lowering his voice and leaning closer. โ€œI just want to apologize to her. And to see my son.โ€

At the mention of little Adam, my shoulders slumped, my righteous anger deflating slightly. โ€œLook, Drakeโ€ฆโ€ I began carefully. โ€œWhatever happened between you and Zoe is your business, I suppose. But I canโ€™t help you win her back, even if I wanted to.โ€

โ€œCanโ€™t?โ€ Drake repeated, refocusing on me with that infuriatingly smug look. โ€œOr wonโ€™t?โ€

I scowled. โ€œWhatโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€

Leaning in conspiratorially, Drakeโ€™s lips curved into a slow smile that made my skin prickle.

โ€œCome now, Luna,โ€ he murmured, holding my gaze intently. โ€œYou and I both know our interests here align more than either of us would like to admit.โ€

My mouth went dry, panic fluttering in my chest as I searched his face. โ€œI donโ€™t know what youโ€™re talking about.โ€

Drake merely tsked, shaking his head in a mockery of sympathy. โ€œThe lovely gown,โ€ he drawled, letting his stare trail slowly down the black silk draping my body. โ€œThe diamonds at your throat that seem to weigh so heavily. The tension between you and your husbandโ€ฆ so thick, I could cut it with a knifeโ€ฆโ€

Heat flooded my cheeks as I averted my gaze, my nails digging into my palms. How could he possibly knowโ€ฆ?

โ€œWord travels fast among the elite circles, Iโ€™m afraid,โ€ Drake continued. โ€œTalk of trouble in paradise in the very heart of Nightcrest and all that.โ€

My jaw clenched. Drakeโ€™s reputation certainly preceded himโ€”but so did mine, it seemed.

โ€œSo you see,โ€ he went on, unperturbed by my stony silence, โ€œyou want Noahโ€™s attention just as badly as I want Zoeโ€™s affection again. Perhaps we couldโ€ฆ help each other out?โ€

I swung my head around to gape at him. โ€œAttention?โ€ I hissed. โ€œYouโ€™re mistaken.โ€

But Drake leveled me with a knowing gaze. He said nothing for a long time, and finally, I felt as if he had seen straight through to my coreโ€”maybe even more than I had ever seen myself. I quickly looked away, gritting my teeth.

โ€œSo what are you suggesting?โ€ I asked, taking a sip of my water.

โ€œWe can make them jealous,โ€ he whispered. Seeing my eyes widen, he held up his hand in a placating gesture. โ€œNothing too indecent, I assure you. But a little flirting can go a long way, you know?โ€

When my withering glare didnโ€™t falter, he pressed on in a low tone.

โ€œJust think about it, Hannah. It could work perfectlyโ€”you make Noah jealous and I soften Zoe up again. We can win our respective partners back without anyโ€ฆ emotional entanglements getting too messy.โ€ My head was whirling even as my instincts screamed at me to shut this down immediately. I didnโ€™t want Noah back; I didnโ€™t love him anymore. And Drake was everything I despisedโ€”a playboy only looking out for himself.

โ€œWho says I want Noah back?โ€ I said.

Drake raised his eyebrows in mock surprise. โ€œWell then, what do you want?โ€ he asked. โ€œI assure you, your words here will not be repeated.โ€

I paused, worrying my lower lip. I had no grounds to trust Drake, and so I decided to keep it simple.

โ€œI want a good reputation for myself,โ€ I said. โ€œFor my own future.โ€

Drake blinked, and then realization seemed to dawn on him. โ€œVery well. How about this: if you help me make Zoe jealous and win her back, then Iโ€™ll assure that Nightcrest is voted as the pack to host the Lunar Festivalโ€”and Iโ€™ll be sure to make it known that your packโ€™s success in this endeavor is because of you, the illustrious Luna.โ€

I felt my heart skip a beat. Now thatโ€ฆ that was an intriguing prospect. But stillโ€ฆ

โ€œWhy should I trust you?โ€ I demanded. โ€œYouโ€™re a playboy, Drakeโ€”everyone knows it, except for me, apparently.โ€

He spread his hands in an all-too-casual display of innocence. โ€œI give you my word, Luna: No under-the-table deals, no indecent proposals. Just an alliance of mutual benefit between two people who want something.โ€

I opened my mouth to retort, but the words died in my throat as Noahโ€™s familiar figure materialized beside me. My husbandโ€™s presence was like a sudden, suffocating weight in the air, and I stiffened. I stiffened even more when I felt his arm snake around my waist.

โ€œHannah,โ€ he murmured in my ear, his voice a combination of annoyance and something moreโ€”something huskier. โ€œLetโ€™s dance.โ€

Before I could blink, Noah was steering me away from the barโ€”away from Drake. As I was pulled back into the crowd, I chanced one last glance over my shoulder. Drake raised his glass in a subtle salute, his lips pulling into a wicked smirk.

โ€œDonโ€™t forget, Hannah,โ€ he called out, just loud enough for me to hear. โ€œYou promised to give me a tour of the pack tomorrow, didnโ€™t you?โ€

I nodded in agreement without thinking.
