Chapter 0233

โ€œWellโ€ฆ at the bar earlier, there was this guy,โ€ Emma explained. โ€œHe was hitting on Hannah, wanted to buy her a drink. He mentioned something about a nearby hiking trail with a waterfall at the end.โ€

Noahโ€™s ears perked up. โ€œA guy was hitting on Hannah? She didnโ€™t go anywhere with him, did she?โ€ he asked, partly to ensure her safety and partly because he was curious.

โ€œOf course not. She turned him down,โ€ Emma said.

โ€œShe told him she was married,โ€ Amber added. โ€œShowed him her ring and everything. He didnโ€™t seem deterred and gave her his business card, but she threw it away when he left.โ€

As the girls spoke, a small part of Noah felt a surge of reliefโ€ฆ pride? He pushed the feeling aside, focusing on the matter at hand. โ€œDo you think this guy could be involved?โ€

Emma shrugged. โ€œWe donโ€™t know, but itโ€™s the only lead weโ€™ve got. He was really persistent. Maybe turning him down pissed him off,โ€ she suggested.

Noah turned to Drake and Zoe. โ€œWe need to find this hiking trail with the waterfall. It might be our best shot at finding Hannah.โ€ He pointed at Drake. โ€œDrake, you come with me. As for the rest of you, wait here for the police. Tell them everything you know. And call us if you hear anything at all.โ€

Viona, Emma, and Amber nodded. But Zoe pursed her lips and folded her arms, still wearing her sparkling red dressโ€”now with Drakeโ€™s jacket on top. โ€œNo way,โ€ she said. โ€œIโ€™m going with you.โ€

Noah huffed, already brushing past her. โ€œYou should stay here. Itโ€™s dangerousโ€”โ€

โ€œI know the trail theyโ€™re talking about. Iโ€™ve been here before, a few years back. Iโ€™ve hiked that same trail.โ€

With a sigh, Noah relented; it was best to have Zoe with them. โ€œFine,โ€ he said, flinging the car door open. โ€œYou navigate. Drake, you keep trying to track Hannahโ€™s phone.โ€

โ€œI never stopped,โ€ Drake growled.

With that, they sped off into the night, Zoe giving directions as Noah pushed the car as fast as it would go. The winding mountain roads were treacherous in the dark, but Noah navigated the curves and switchbacks with ease, so completely laser-focused on finding Hannah that he hardly noticed.

โ€œThere!โ€ Zoe suddenly called out, pointing. โ€œThat side road. The trailhead should be down there.โ€

Noah jerked the wheel, sending them careening down a narrow dirt road. Trees whipped past as they bounced along the uneven surface.

โ€œAre you sure about this?โ€ Drake asked, gripping the dashboard. โ€œThis doesnโ€™t look like a road that leads to a popular hiking trail.โ€

โ€œIt has to be,โ€ Zoe insisted. โ€œI remember coming here years ago. Itโ€™s a bit off the beaten path, but thatโ€™s what makes the waterfall so special.โ€

Drake narrowed his eyes. โ€œWhen did you evenโ€ฆ Nevermind,โ€ he said, shaking his head.

They drove for what felt like miles, the road getting rougher and narrower. Noahโ€™s heart sank as they rounded a bend and foundโ€ฆ nothing. The road ended abruptly in a small clearing.

Chapter 0237

โ€œIs thisโ€ฆ it?โ€ Drake asked, leaning forward.

โ€œNoโ€ฆโ€ Zoe whispered. โ€œWait, this canโ€™t be right. I was sureโ€ฆโ€

Noah slammed his fist against the steering wheel. โ€œDammit, Zoe! You had one job!โ€

โ€œHey, donโ€™t get mad at me!โ€ she retorted. โ€œItโ€™s dark.โ€

Drake leaned out the window, peering into the darkness. โ€œMaybe we missed a turn somewhere? Or there could be a hidden path we canโ€™t see in the dark.โ€

โ€œLook, Iโ€™m sorry,โ€ Zoe said softly. โ€œI really thought it was this way. Maybe my memory isnโ€™t as good as I thought.โ€

Noah took a deep breath, trying to calm the anger and frustration building inside him. Getting angry wouldnโ€™t help Hannah. He needed to think clearly.

โ€œAlright, alright,โ€ he finally said. โ€œItโ€™s not your fault, Zoe. Weโ€™ll find another way.โ€

With a heavy heart, Noah turned the car around, the tires kicking up dirt and gravel as they headed back.

As they drove back toward the main road, Noahโ€™s mind raced with possibilities. Where could Hannah be? Was she hurt? Who had taken her, and why?

And underneath it all, a small voice, the voice of his wolf, whispered: โ€œWhy did it take something like this for you to realize how much she means to you?โ€
