Chapter 0233
โWellโฆ at the bar earlier, there was this guy,โ Emma explained. โHe was hitting on Hannah, wanted to buy her a drink. He mentioned something about a nearby hiking trail with a waterfall at the end.โ
Noahโs ears perked up. โA guy was hitting on Hannah? She didnโt go anywhere with him, did she?โ he asked, partly to ensure her safety and partly because he was curious.
โOf course not. She turned him down,โ Emma said.
โShe told him she was married,โ Amber added. โShowed him her ring and everything. He didnโt seem deterred and gave her his business card, but she threw it away when he left.โ
As the girls spoke, a small part of Noah felt a surge of reliefโฆ pride? He pushed the feeling aside, focusing on the matter at hand. โDo you think this guy could be involved?โ
Emma shrugged. โWe donโt know, but itโs the only lead weโve got. He was really persistent. Maybe turning him down pissed him off,โ she suggested.
Noah turned to Drake and Zoe. โWe need to find this hiking trail with the waterfall. It might be our best shot at finding Hannah.โ He pointed at Drake. โDrake, you come with me. As for the rest of you, wait here for the police. Tell them everything you know. And call us if you hear anything at all.โ
Viona, Emma, and Amber nodded. But Zoe pursed her lips and folded her arms, still wearing her sparkling red dressโnow with Drakeโs jacket on top. โNo way,โ she said. โIโm going with you.โ
Noah huffed, already brushing past her. โYou should stay here. Itโs dangerousโโ
โI know the trail theyโre talking about. Iโve been here before, a few years back. Iโve hiked that same trail.โ
With a sigh, Noah relented; it was best to have Zoe with them. โFine,โ he said, flinging the car door open. โYou navigate. Drake, you keep trying to track Hannahโs phone.โ
โI never stopped,โ Drake growled.
With that, they sped off into the night, Zoe giving directions as Noah pushed the car as fast as it would go. The winding mountain roads were treacherous in the dark, but Noah navigated the curves and switchbacks with ease, so completely laser-focused on finding Hannah that he hardly noticed.
โThere!โ Zoe suddenly called out, pointing. โThat side road. The trailhead should be down there.โ
Noah jerked the wheel, sending them careening down a narrow dirt road. Trees whipped past as they bounced along the uneven surface.
โAre you sure about this?โ Drake asked, gripping the dashboard. โThis doesnโt look like a road that leads to a popular hiking trail.โ
โIt has to be,โ Zoe insisted. โI remember coming here years ago. Itโs a bit off the beaten path, but thatโs what makes the waterfall so special.โ
Drake narrowed his eyes. โWhen did you evenโฆ Nevermind,โ he said, shaking his head.
They drove for what felt like miles, the road getting rougher and narrower. Noahโs heart sank as they rounded a bend and foundโฆ nothing. The road ended abruptly in a small clearing.
Chapter 0237
โIs thisโฆ it?โ Drake asked, leaning forward.
โNoโฆโ Zoe whispered. โWait, this canโt be right. I was sureโฆโ
Noah slammed his fist against the steering wheel. โDammit, Zoe! You had one job!โ
โHey, donโt get mad at me!โ she retorted. โItโs dark.โ
Drake leaned out the window, peering into the darkness. โMaybe we missed a turn somewhere? Or there could be a hidden path we canโt see in the dark.โ
โLook, Iโm sorry,โ Zoe said softly. โI really thought it was this way. Maybe my memory isnโt as good as I thought.โ
Noah took a deep breath, trying to calm the anger and frustration building inside him. Getting angry wouldnโt help Hannah. He needed to think clearly.
โAlright, alright,โ he finally said. โItโs not your fault, Zoe. Weโll find another way.โ
With a heavy heart, Noah turned the car around, the tires kicking up dirt and gravel as they headed back.
As they drove back toward the main road, Noahโs mind raced with possibilities. Where could Hannah be? Was she hurt? Who had taken her, and why?
And underneath it all, a small voice, the voice of his wolf, whispered: โWhy did it take something like this for you to realize how much she means to you?โ
