Chapter 785 How Can You Compete With Me?
Hayleyโs POV:
I didnโt let any of their words get under my skin.
Registration wrapped up pretty quickly after that.
I turned to Humbert. โSee anything worth taking? Go ahead and write down the number and add it to mine.โ
โThereโs one that caught my eye, but Iโm not sure yet,โ he said, hesitating.
โIf it feels right to you, then go for it. Iโll cover it. Donโt stress about the price.โ Iโd always been the type to treat my friends well.
Humbert didnโt answer and just looked defeated. I could tell he also thought I didnโt stand a chance.
I didnโt bother trying to explain.
โI get it,โ Humbert said seriously, โBut thereโs still some time left. I want to keep trying.โ
I just shrugged and let him do his thing.
He took off for the inner room again, clearly on a mission to find something solid.
Once he was gone, I was left alone and got a little bored. With the morning session almost over, I figured I might as well head to the lounge, grab a drink, and relax while I waited for Humbert.
A few minutes later, the awful scent that both Hera and I couldnโt stand started drifting closer.
I looked up to see Preston approaching, with Becky tagging along behind him.
He casually waved down a waiter and snagged a glass of champagne, looking smug and confident.
โMs. Carson, you seem quite relaxed. Care to share a drink with me?โ he asked, handing me a glass frivolously. His eyes grossly roamed over me.
I glanced at the champagne, turned my face away, and said sharply, โGet lost!โ
His grin dropped, and he shot me a cold glare. โBitch! Letโs see how long you can keep up that attitude. When they announce the results later, youโre done. Iโll make sure you canโt even get out of bed afterward.โ
I stared at him and gave a cool smirk. โOh yeah? Did I lose already? The results arenโt even out yet. Weโll see whoโs laughing later.โ
Preston sneered. โIโve got four stones with emeralds. I havenโt cracked open the others yet, but Iโll probably get some from them. You were out there digging through junk, picking up worthless leftovers. What makes you think you can stand a chance against me?โ
I didnโt even feel like responding. Arguing with someone that crude and full of himself was a waste of energy.
That was when Becky finally spoke up, clearly trying to stand up for me. โMr. Preston, a real man should know how to treat women with respect.
โYouโre a high-ranking werewolf, yet youโre picking on an Omega girl. Thatโs bad for your familyโs reputation. This wager doesnโt even mean anything. Why not just-โ
โShut up!โ Preston snapped, cutting her off.
He looked at her like she was dirt. โYouโre here to pick stones with gems. Thatโs it. Donโt stick your nose in things that donโt concern you. Learn your place.โ
Becky looked humiliated.
Seeing how crushed she looked, all I wanted was to let Hera loose and let her rip Preston apart right there.
But I was still playing the Omega role, so I had to keep that side hidden.
All I could do was gently pat Beckyโs shoulder in comfort and watch her storm off furiously.
Preston, on the other hand, didnโt seem to care at all. He calmly put his champagne down and plopped onto the couch right next to me.
I shifted away in disgust, but he just kept creeping closer like he wanted to glue himself to me.
After a few awkward rounds, I ended up trapped against the armrest. With nowhere else to go, I stood up, ready to leave.
But then he reached out and grabbed the armrest, blocking me.
