Chapter 766 Itโ€™s Illegal to Kill Your Husband

Hayleyโ€™s POV:

Truman stepped forward until he was standing right in front of me. He lowered his head slightly and said, โ€œMs. Carson, it looks like Iโ€™ve helped you again. Let me thinkโ€”how many times is that now? Have you figured out how youโ€™re going to repay me?โ€

โ€œNot going to,โ€ I replied flatly. โ€œYou did it of your own free will. I never asked for your help.โ€

The man standing nearby seemed to realize we knew each other, and his face paled in an instant. He didnโ€™t even dare breathe too loudly.

Taking advantage of the moment, he silently picked up the coat on his chair and began inching toward the door, moving like a sideways crabโ€”one slow shuffle at a time.

โ€œStop right there!โ€

Truman, just as quick as I was, caught the manโ€™s movement and barked the command. Then he slowly turned around.

โ€œYou think you can just walk out like nothing happened after saying things you shouldnโ€™t have?โ€

Melody walked in at that moment, clearly sensing the tension in the air. She hurried over, her expression grave as she warned, โ€œThis isnโ€™t our territory, and itโ€™s definitely not Grimmoon Pack. Donโ€™t stir up trouble here.โ€

โ€œOh, Melody, youโ€™ve got it all wrong,โ€ Truman said, all innocent charm. โ€œIโ€™m not the type to bully the weak. If youโ€™re wondering why Iโ€™m like this, maybe you should ask him.โ€

He tilted his chin toward the man cowering against the wall.

Melody frowned thoughtfully before walking over to him.

โ€œSorry, sir,โ€ she said calmly, โ€œheโ€™s got a bit of a temper.โ€

The man opened his mouth to say it was fine, but Melody cut in, โ€œSo, please apologize.โ€

I nearly burst out laughing.

Melody really was something else. This woman was interesting.

โ€œHe hit me, and Iโ€™m the one who has to apologize?โ€ The man gazed at her as if she had just gone insane.

โ€œYou could choose not to,โ€ Melody said with a shrug. โ€œBut then he might feel the need to convince you himself. The last guy who tried his luck is probably still being picked clean by rogues outsideโ€”if they left any bones behind.โ€

Before she could finish, the man bowed, with his hands pressed together in a pleading gesture. โ€œSir, it was my faultโ€”Iโ€™m sorry!โ€

As he apologized, he started slapping himself across the face. โ€œIt was my mouth! I said something stupidโ€”itโ€™s all on me! Please, in the name of the Moon Goddess, forgive me!โ€

Trumanโ€™s face didnโ€™t change, but he turned to me with a slight tilt of his head. โ€œIโ€™m not the one he needs forgiveness from. Itโ€™s her call.โ€

โ€œYes, maโ€™am!โ€ The man said, swiveling his head toward me and bowing so fast it was almost a blur. "I was wrong, I swear! I wonโ€™t ever do it again; please let me off this time!โ€

I waved my hand dismissively, not interested in bothering with him. โ€œGet out of here. Youโ€™re ruining my appetite.โ€

โ€œThank you! Thank you!โ€ he cried, instantly shifting into his wolf form and bolting out of the restaurant like his tail was on fire.

The folks who had been eating at his table didnโ€™t wait around eitherโ€”they scattered like leaves in the wind, terrified of being next.

I stretched, completely ignoring Truman, and sank back into my seat.

But no sooner had I sat down than I felt a warm breath drift across my ear.

Then came Trumanโ€™s low, teasing voice. โ€œMs. Carson, I helped you again. Are you sure youโ€™re not going to repay me properly?โ€

The tingling sensation shot straight down my spine; my body felt limp.

Oddly enough, Hera stayed quiet inside me. Calm, even.

If it had been any other man, she wouldโ€™ve gone ballistic by now, clawing her way out to throw hands.

I didnโ€™t overthink it; I simply pulled out a silver needle and stabbed him.

But halfway there, Truman caught my wrist with a firm grip.

He glanced at the needle, then gave me a playful grin. โ€œYou know, trying to murder your husband is illegal.โ€

I growled through clenched teeth, โ€œIโ€™ll just leave you half-dead. That should be enough.โ€

โ€œTsk, tsk. So ruthless,โ€ he said with a chuckle. Then, in a lighter, more flirty tone, โ€œSo you are admitting Iโ€™m your husband?โ€

โ€œYouโ€“go to hell!โ€

That was it. Iโ€™d had it. I launched straight into the advanced wolf combat moves Iโ€™d once used in my alpha certification exam and punched straight at him.
