Listen to this chapter:

Hayden shot back, โ€œAre you still young? So how do you explain your own divorce?โ€

Werner cleared his throat awkwardly and didnโ€™t dare say anything. Actually, when he first heard about Donaldโ€™s divorce, he was pretty shocked, too.

Werner thought, โ€˜Werenโ€™t they still talking about Jennifer being pregnant? Then Donald said it was just a false alarm. Jennifer wasnโ€™t actually pregnant, after all.โ€™

Werner was inevitably a bit disappointed. He was all alone now, and he wished more than anything to be a grandpa, to have a grandchild running around.

Before long, Michael arrived. The moment Hayden saw his great-grandson, all his gloom vanished in an instant.

Hayden hugged Mike tightly, clearly reluctant to let go. He asked with concern, โ€œMike, did you have fun in Jarisburg?โ€

In his soft, childish voice, Mike replied, โ€œGreat-grandpa, Jarisburg was super fun! You should have your dad take you there, too!โ€

Hayden burst out laughing.

Werner, standing nearby, pinched Michaelโ€™s little arm and said, โ€œLook at you, Mike. Youโ€™ve gotten all tanned.โ€

Michael, who cared a lot about his looks, covered his face with his hands. โ€œReally? Grandpa Werner, will being tanned mess up my good looks?โ€

Werner couldnโ€™t help but laugh. โ€œOf course not! Mike, youโ€™re still the coolest kid around.โ€

Hayden shot Werner a look, telling him to quit laughing and go fetch some snacks and drinks. This was the first time Hayden got to be alone with Michael. He liked Michael a lot.

โ€œJust seeing your adorable little face makes all my worries disappear, Mike,โ€ Hayden said with a smile.

โ€œGreat-grandpa, you can ask my mom for some photos of me. That way, when Iโ€™m not around, you can look at my photos and you wonโ€™t feel sad anymore,โ€ Mike giggled.

โ€œAlright!โ€ Hayden pinched Mikeโ€™s chubby little cheek.

Footsteps sounded outside. Irene parked her car and strode right in.

Irene said, โ€œDad, Jonathan said he took Mike to Jarisburg for a trip. I didnโ€™t believe it at first. Why is it so hard for me to see my sweet grandson?โ€

As soon as she walked in, Irene waved at Michael. โ€œMike, come here! Look what Grandma got you.โ€

โ€œGrandma!โ€ Michael shouted with glee, dashing over to her. Irene called out to him with a smile and hurried to slip the gold bracelet she bought onto his wrist.

Michael said, โ€œGrandma, Mom got me one almost just like this.โ€

Irene frowned a little. โ€œThe one I bought is way fancier than your momโ€™s. This oneโ€™s totally one-of-a-kind.โ€

With that, she scooped the little guy up into her arms, studying his face. Michael looked so much like Jonathan did when he was a kid.

Irene couldnโ€™t stop smiling. โ€œMike, who did you go to Jarisburg with?โ€

โ€œMom and Dad,โ€ Mike said happily.

The moment Irene heard the word โ€œMom,โ€ her smile froze. โ€œOh, really? So where did you stay while you were in Jarisburg?โ€ she asked.

โ€œAt Mr. Limeโ€™s big mansion! His house is just like a palace. Itโ€™s super, super pretty!โ€ Mike chirped excitedly.

Ireneโ€™s expression darkened again. โ€œMike, who taught you to call him โ€˜Mr. Limeโ€™? Was it your mom?โ€

Mike shook his head and said carefully, โ€œI saw Mr. Lime on TVโ€ฆ Mr. Lime is my idol!โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t call him โ€˜Mr. Limeโ€™. Mike, heโ€™s your dad! You should call him โ€˜Dadโ€™!โ€ Irene insisted.

Hayden, who was standing nearby, chimed in, โ€œLet the kid call him whatever he wants. โ€˜Mr. Limeโ€™ sounds pretty cool, doesnโ€™t it?โ€

With that, he turned to Mike and spoke to him, โ€œMike, you donโ€™t have to listen to your grandma. You can call your dad whatever you like. As long as youโ€™re happy, thatโ€™s all that matters.โ€

Mike nodded, slipped out of Ireneโ€™s arms, and snuggled into Haydenโ€™s embrace. Suddenly, his eyes grew a little misty. He said, โ€œGreat-grandpa, whereโ€™s my mom? I miss her. I want to see her.โ€
