Chapter 798
Teresa glossed over the real reason, not daring to admit it was because sheโd rushed to save Jennifer from a suicide attempt, since Miriam already didnโt think much of Jennifer.
โI just accidentally bumped into something, and it made the baby a bit unstable. Iโll be fine after a couple of days of rest,โ Teresa said.
Miriamโs eyes filled with tears. โBeing pregnant is just too tough! Itโs all Jonathanโs fault. It was bad enough that he got you pregnant with Mike before the divorce, but now youโre pregnant again after the divorce. What a bastard! He should just get a vasectomy already.โ
Teresa couldnโt help but laugh. Miriam, still crying, asked Teresa what she was laughing at.
โThank you, Miriam, for always looking out for me,โ Teresa said.
โCome on. Weโre too close to say that. You know how much I worry about you. Youโre pregnant and canโt even catch a break. And thereโs even Jennifer, always stirring up trouble and bossing you around. Good thing sheโs not your real sister,โ Miriam said.
Now, when Jenniferโs name came up, Teresa felt completely at ease. She quickly changed the subject. โAlright, letโs not talk about her. When are you coming back to Nareigh?โ
โEdward and I are heading back to Nareigh today. Iโll come to see you the moment I get back,โ Miriam promised.
Teresa replied and then ended the call.
Miriam came back way faster than anyone expected. She showed up that very night. Teresa had thought she wouldnโt be here until tomorrow.
Miriam rushed in, panting, and said, โWhen I saw you were in the hospital, I couldnโt stop worrying. Edward and I talked it over and changed our tickets to the earliest flight. The moment we landed, I grabbed a cab and came straight here.โ
As for Edward, he went home first and would come by later.
Teresa was really touched. She picked up the peeled pomegranate and grapefruit from the table and offered some to Miriam.
Miriam snorted. โDid that bastard peel these?โ
Teresa clicked her tongue. โAlright, stop cursing him.โ
โFeeling sorry for him now? I was just teasing him,โ Miriam said. She sat down next to Teresa and dug into the fruit.
Teresa said, โI donโt want to talk badly about him. Heโs actually been the one helping my family out a lot while everythingโs been going wrong.โ
โOh, so now heโs not just your ex? Are you two getting back together?โ Miriam teased.
Teresaโs breath caught. She grabbed a piece of grapefruit and stuffed it into Miriamโs mouth. โNo way, weโre not getting back together,โ she said.
Miriam snorted. She was about to crack another joke when suddenly there was a knock at the door. Thinking it was Edward, Miriam smiled as she went to open it. But when she saw who was standing there, her smile froze on her face.
The next second, her whole demeanor turned hostile. โWhat are you doing here? What do you want with Teresa now?โ she snapped.
โI just came to see Teresa,โ Jennifer said, taking a deep breath to steady herself.
โYouโre not welcome here. Youโre not even Teresaโs real sister. Canโt you have some boundaries? Why do you keep clinging to her? Just stay away from her, okay?โ Miriam snapped.
โMiriam,โ Teresa called out. She lifted the covers and got out of bed. When Jennifer saw Teresa in her hospital gown, a flicker of guilt and concern flashed in her eyes.
โCome in. Miriam, Iโm craving some juice. Could you go downstairs and get me some?โ Teresa said.
Miriam knew Teresa was just trying to send her out of the room, but she gritted her teeth and said, โFine, Iโll go get it for you. But if anything happens, call the police right away. Donโt let that crazy woman do anything to you!โ
Teresa didnโt know what to say. After Miriam left, Jennifer finally stepped inside.
Teresa gestured toward the sofa and said flatly, โHave a seat.โ
The room was pretty spacious, so Jennifer could sit wherever she wanted. โNo, Iโll just stand,โ Jennifer replied.
