Chapter 792
Jenniferโs face was streaked with tears as she looked at Teresa and shook her head.
She said, โBut I really canโt go on anymore, Teresa. I have nothing left. Iโm such a coward. I just donโt have the courage to start over. Iโm sorry, Teresa. Iโm really, really sorry.โ
She kept saying sorry to Teresa. Then she turned around, closed her eyes, and got ready to jump.
โJennifer, no!โ Once again, a voice rang out behind her.
Unlike when Teresa called her, Jennifer didnโt turn around immediately. She stiffened, clenched her fists, and her whole body tensed up.
Donald strode up to Jennifer and then stopped just a step away. He looked up at her, seeing Jennifer teetering on the edge.
Staring at her back, he choked up. โJennifer, itโs meโฆ Iโm late. Please come down. Letโs go home, okay?โ
Jennifer still didnโt turn around. Her eyes were already blurred with tears.
She struggled to speak, โForget about me, Donald. Youโre right. Iโm not good enough to be your wife. Just sell the house, meet someone who truly suits you, and get remarried. I hope you find happiness.โ
โPlease, youโve got it all wrong! I know youโre upset, but just hear me out. That girl at the hospitalโitโs not what you think. She confessed her feelings to me, but I turned her down. I told her I was married, and she never bothered me again.
โI had no idea youโd go to the hospital, or that youโd see that and misunderstand. And I didnโt know things in your family had gotten so bad for you!โ
Jennifer still didnโt turn around. She waited until Donald finished speaking. Then she took a deep breath and said, โIt doesnโt matter anymore.โ
Her voice was soft and almost emotionless. โEverything my mother said was true. I shouldnโt have been born. I was never meant to be alive.โ
Donald said, โWhy punish yourself for someone elseโs mistakes? If she could say something like that to you, then she doesnโt deserve to be your mother. Youโre still Jennifer, no matter what.
โDonโt let what she said mess with your head. Please, just come down, okay? Iโm begging youโฆโ
Jennifer finally turned around. She clutched at her chest in agony and said, โBut Iโve made so many mistakes. I hate myself for it! I hurt the people I love, and I hurt so many innocent people, too. I donโt deserve to live. I donโtโฆโ
Donald said, โThen let me atone with you. Weโre still a couple. We should face this together.โ
โNo!โ Jennifer tensed up again. โEverything Iโve done wrong is my own fault. It has nothing to do with you. Donald, please, Iโm begging youโ live your life, be happy, and just forget about meโฆโ
As soon as Jennifer finished speaking, she threw her head back and leapt off the edge.
โNo-!โ Donald exclaimed. His desperate cry echoed through the air.
Donald caught one of Jenniferโs arms. Teresa dashed over and seized Jenniferโs other hand. Jennifer was left dangling in the air, and her whole body was suspended above the void.
Staring at the two people holding onto herโone was the man she loved most, the other the sister she cherished more than anyoneโJennifer was overwhelmed with guilt for having hurt them both.
She said, โTeresa, Donald, just let me go. I donโt deserve to live. I really donโtโฆโ
Donald gripped Jenniferโs arm with all his strength and struggled to say, โIโm not letting you die. I saved you once before, and Iโll save you again.โ
He fought desperately, using every ounce of strength to haul Jennifer back up to safety. Down below, the firefighters had already set up a rescue air cushion.
