Listen to this chapter:

Jennifer drew a shaky breath, staring at Teresa as if she couldnโ€™t believe Teresa was really here.

Teresa hurried over and said in a trembling voice, with urgency, โ€œJennifer, please come down! Itโ€™s too dangerous up there. Letโ€™s talk, okay?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t come any closer!โ€ Jennifer shouted through her tears. โ€œTeresa, stop worrying about me. Iโ€™m not worth it. I donโ€™t deserve you caring about meโ€ฆโ€

Teresa took a deep breath and said, โ€œEven if weโ€™re not related by blood anymore, in my heart, youโ€™re still Hannah. Mom feels the same way. As long as you want, youโ€™ll always be Hannah to us.โ€

Jennifer shook her head desperately, with tears streaming down her face. โ€œIโ€™m not Hannah. I never really was. Youโ€™re right, the real Hannah died the day she fell off that cliff as a kid. I was just too much of a coward, too weak."

โ€œI couldnโ€™t go back to that suffocating family, so I hid away for all these years, leaving you all alone. I lived as Jennifer all this time, never once thinking about how you felt. I abandoned you, betrayed the bond we had as sisters.

โ€œAnd then I even tried to control you and always forced my will on you, making you so miserable. I kept ignoring your pain, always thought I was right, and always took things out on you.

โ€œIโ€™m not a good sister. I donโ€™t deserve to be your sister anymore. Iโ€™m sorry, Teresa. I really amโ€ฆโ€

In that moment, it finally hit Jennifer just how many terrible mistakes sheโ€™d made over the years. Sheโ€™d hurt the people she cared about most. Sheโ€™d let down her own family.

Jenniferโ€™s eyes brimmed with genuine remorse. She said, โ€œTeresa, please, help me tellโ€ฆ tellโ€ฆโ€ Her voice trembled, choked with emotion. She could barely get the words out.

Then she said, โ€œTell Mom Iโ€™m sorry. She truly cared about me, but I misunderstood her so much. I always showed her my coldest and most impatient side.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not going to say sorry for you!โ€ Teresa shouted. โ€œIf you really feel sorry, then come down and tell her yourself. I wonโ€™t do it for you. You have to face her and say it yourself.โ€

Jennifer looked down, wavering. Teresa started to move closer. But Jennifer snapped out of it and yelled, โ€œDonโ€™t come any closer. If you take another step, Iโ€™ll jump!โ€

Teresa stopped where she was and quickly said, โ€œOkay, I wonโ€™t come any closer! But how about you come over here to me? Please, donโ€™t think youโ€™re worthless. There are still so many people in this world who love youโ€”me, Mom, and Ms. Nelson.

โ€œAnd just think, if you really left us, how heartbroken would Ms. Nelson be? She took you in, and youโ€™re her pride and joy, her favorite student. She cares about you so much.โ€

Hearing Genevieveโ€™s name, Jennifer took a deep breath and shook her head. She said, โ€œIโ€™ve let Ms. Nelson down, too. Iโ€™ve made such a mess of my life, and Iโ€™ve really disappointed her. I guess Iโ€™ll make it up to her in the afterlife.โ€

โ€œAnd what about Donald? Are you really willing to leave him all alone in this world?โ€ Teresa pressed.

Jennifer suddenly choked up. Her emotions overwhelmed her. โ€œHe wonโ€™t be alone. Donald has already fallen for someone elseโ€ฆโ€ Jennifer said.

โ€œThatโ€™s not true,โ€ Teresa cried out. โ€œI called himโ€”he told me everything! What you saw at the hospital was all a misunderstanding. Donald only loves you, Jennifer. Heโ€™s been searching for you all day, just like meโ€”running around like crazy, terrified youโ€™d do something reckless.

โ€œHeโ€™s on his way here right now. If you jump now, youโ€™ll never see Donald again. Heโ€™ll be heartbroken for the rest of his life. Do you really want to leave him in that kind of pain?โ€

Jennifer hesitated again.

Teresa said, word by word, โ€œJust keep living. Everything is gonna be fine.โ€
