Chapter 776
Teresa hadnโt expected Peggy to become this extreme.
Teresa said, โLetโs wait for the DNA test results. Thereโs no need to feel bad. If Lucas turns out to be your son, youโd have four kids.โ
Evelyn met Teresaโs gaze. โYes. If Lucas truly is my son,โ she thought, โTeresa, Hannah, Isabel, and Lucas. That would mean Iโd have four children."
โThank you for comforting me, Teresa,โ Evelyn said softly. โYouโve matured so much.โ
When they got home, Teresa went to keep Michael company.
Evelynโs phone rang. It was Jennifer. โSo, how did it go? Is Peggy your cousin? Could she be my mom?โ she asked.
โHannah, Iโm still not sure. Weโve already done the DNA test. The results come out tomorrow,โ Evelyn replied.
โA DNA test?โ Jennifer asked. โWith whom?โ
โPeggyโs son,โ Evelyn answered.
โI see,โ Jennifer said, her voice tight. โIf he is your biological son, then it confirms the babies were swapped back then, and that would mean I am the daughter of that awful woman.โ
โAwful woman?โ Evelyn asked, confused. โHave you known about what Peggy did in the past?โ
Jennifer fell silent for a couple of seconds. โWhat did she do before?โ
โYou donโt know? Then why did you call her an awful woman?โ Evelyn asked.
โThe way she actsโso vulgar, hanging all over that old man, flirting shamelessly. Itโs disgusting. Of course, sheโs an awful woman! How could someone like that possibly be my mother?โ Jennifer hissed, contempt dripping from every word.
Evelyn went quiet. โSo Jennifer doesnโt know about Peggyโs past misdeeds after all,โ she thought.
โWhy are you so quiet?โ Jennifer pressed. โStop dodging the question. Tell me, what did she do?โ
Evelyn hesitated, not sure if she should tell Jennifer the truth.
Jennifer instantly sensed Evelyn was holding something back. She hated being kept in the dark, hated deception. โFine. If you wonโt tell me,โ she said coldly, โIโll find out myself eventually.โ
โHannah, itโs not that I donโt want to tell you. I just donโt want to upset you,โ Evelyn explained.
โLet me talk to her,โ Teresa said, walking over. She took the phone from Evelyn. โJennifer? Itโs me.โ
Jennifer immediately recognized Teresaโs voice. โTeresa, just tell me what are you guys hiding from me?โ she demanded.
โI need you to be prepared for this,โ Teresa said carefully. โPlease, when you hear it, donโt lose your cool and donโt do anything rash.โ
โI wonโt,โ Jennifer shot back. โHonestly, keeping me in the dark like this is whatโs making me feel like losing it and doing something rash.โ
Teresa was silent for a long moment. After a silent nod from Evelyn, Teresa finally spoke. โPeggy left Nareigh because she did something deeply shameful. She had an affair.โ
Jennifer listened, surprisingly calm. โSo she was the other woman? She wrecked someone elseโs marriage?โ she clarified, her voice unnervingly flat.
โYes,โ Teresa replied. โShe came between a married couple and hurt the wife.โ
Jennifer took a deep breath, her eyes darkening with revulsion. โOf course. That explains how repulsive she is.โ
โThe kind of woman who breaks up marriages deserves nothing but contempt,โ she thought. Taking another steadying breath, she stated flatly, โForget the DNA test. She is not my mother. My mother has to be someone else.โ
Teresa said, โRegardless of whether sheโs your biological mother or not, Mom just wants you to know, youโll always be our Hannah.โ
Jennifer was taken aback.
Evelyn took the phone back, her voice thick with unshed tears. โHannah, Teresa is right. As long as you consider me your mother, youโll always be Hannah to me. That will never change. Youโll always be my daughter.โ
Jennifer recalled the time sheโd nearly been hit by a carโhow Evelyn had rushed to pull her to safety, gripping her hand, asking worriedly if she was hurt.
She was deeply touched. But she didnโt want her fragility to be discovered. She grasped for an escape, โSomething just came up. I have to go. Text me the address of the DNA testing center. Iโll be there tomorrow too,โ she said. The call ended.
Teresa looked at Evelyn. โDonโt worry. I didnโt tell her Peggy was the one who came between you and Philip. Letโs leave it at that for now. Time to sleep, okay?โ
Evelyn nodded. โYou too. Get some rest.โ
It was nearly midnight when Jonathan finally got home. Seeing Teresa sitting on the couch, he paused, clearly surprised. โWhy are you still up?โ
โI couldnโt sleep,โ she replied. โYouโre back late.โ
โBenny went back to Nareigh, so I drove him to the airport,โ Jonathan said as he took off his coat and hung it up.
Teresa handed him a glass of water. โActually, thereโs something I wanted to ask you.โ
โGo ahead,โ Jonathan said, raising an eyebrow.
โIs it because those previous DNA tests were falsified? Thatโs why youโre so suspicious now?โ Teresa asked.
Jonathanโs gaze settled on her, his expression unreadable. โKind of,โ he said, offering no further explanation.
Teresa nodded. โIโm sorry. Sorry for making you lose faith in it all. It was because of what happened with Mike before.โ
โIf tomorrowโs results show Lucas isnโt Momโs son, then letโs go back to Nareigh,โ Teresa said.
โTired?โ Jonathan asked. โWhat if he is your brother? You do look alike. You even act somewhat similarly.โ
โAct similar?โ Teresa echoed.
โYeah, you both care way too much about how people feelโeven when those people donโt really matter,โ Jonathan said.
Teresa faltered, searching for words. โPeggy and my mom look a lot alike too. Itโs hard to say,โ Teresa finally responded.
โThen weโll wait for tomorrow,โ Jonathan added. โNow I only trust myself.โ
The next morning dawned as usual. Teresa and Evelyn were in the car together, heading out for breakfast before going to the DNA testing center for the results.
Evelyn glanced at Teresa. โJonathan bought property here in Jarisburg, you know. Wouldnโt it be wonderful for Mike to come here for school someday?โ
Teresa shook her head. โWe talked it over. We donโt plan to let Mike leave home during kindergarten or elementary school. Weโll see whatโs next when heโs in middle school. As for education, I donโt have to worry. Jonathan will ensure he gets the best education.โ
Evelyn squeezed Teresaโs hand. โMike deserves the best, and so do you. Youโre my daughter. Before you married, I gave you everything I could provide materially. Now that youโre raising your child on your own, Iโm worried.โ
Teresaโs eyes misted over. โMom, please, stop. Iโm fine. Really.โ
Evelyn sighed. โIf you didnโt love him, you wouldnโt have one child and be carrying another now. I know youโyouโre just so stubborn, pig-headed. If you truly didnโt care, you wouldnโt have fought the entire family to marry him back then.โ
