Chapter 775
โFake?โ Everyone wondered and turned to look at Jonathan.
Then Lucas asked, โJonathan, what do you mean the report might be fake?โ
The results were damning. There was no biological link between Lucas and Evelyn. It couldnโt be fake.
Jonathanโs gaze locked onto Peggy, cold as a scalpel. โI mean someone with resources โ and a motive โ couldโve swapped samples or paid for a favorable result. Authenticity unconfirmed. We retest.โ
Peggy shot back angrily, โAccusing me?โ
Jonathan didnโt deny it. With a gloomy face, he said, โSuch things have happened to me many times. We redo it.โ
Teresa looked at Jonathan and saw the coldness in his eyes.
It was just like Jennifer did to Michael, so he doubted it. Teresa realized it with icy clarity.
Jennifer had pulled this kind of trick so many times before. Was Peggy playing the trick like Jennifer? Teresa wondered.
Then Teresa said, โWhy donโt we just do what Jonathan suggested? Since everyoneโs here, letโs redo it.
โWe can draw blood right now, with both sides watching as the samples are sent in, so thereโs no room for doubt about the results.โ
Peggy was getting impatient. โAre you just making things hard on purpose? The result is already here, but you donโt believe it and keep causing trouble. Lucas is my son, and no test changes that.โ
Lucas remained silent. Teresa turned to Evelyn and said, โMom, what do you think? Draw blood and test again? Everyoneโs here now, so we can make sure the samples canโt be switched.โ
Evelyn sighed and said, โFine by me. But Lucasโฆโ She looked at Lucas and wondered if Lucas would have any objections.
Lucas remained silent. He kept his head down, pondering.
Benny chimed in, โTruth fears nothing. Just retest, okay? Match twice? Case closed.โ
Lucas came to his senses. With everyone urging him, he finally gave a small nod. โAlright, I agree. If itโs still negative, Iโll accept it.โ
He would accept that this gilded cage and Peggyโs smothering shadow were his life.
โFine, letโs retest here. You guys wonโt give up until you hit a dead end, huh?โ Peggy sneered.
Jonathan gazed at Peggy coldly.
Peggy asked, โWhatโs wrong, Jonathan? Didnโt you want a second test? Got something else to say?โ
Jonathan replied sternly, โChoose a different hospital.โ
โWell, switch hospitals?โ Peggy spread her hands mockingly. โPick any hospital around here. But Lucas is my son, and nothing will change.โ
Jonathanโs glare could freeze lava. Just as he was about to speak, Benny stepped between them.
โPeace treaty, folks. No need to switch hospitals. Weโre not familiar with the area anyway, so letโs retest here,โ Benny said.
โLucas, come with me. Blood draw time,โ Benny turned to Lucas and led him away.
Peggy looked uneasy and was about to step forward, but Jonathan blocked her with his arm.
Jonathan said, โWhy not call Jennifer over and have you two do a DNA test as well?โ
Peggy froze in her tracks, her expression shifting instantly.
โNo need. Daughters are worthless trash. Iโll never have one,โ she snapped.
Teresa couldnโt take it anymore and shot back, โYour own mother birthed you. Youโre a woman yet look down on women. How could youโโ
Peggy shrugged it off and replied, โSo what? You canโt stand me? Stay away from me, okay?โ
Teresa glared at her, but Jonathan patted Teresaโs shoulder, signaling her not to get angry with a scumbag.
Teresa took a deep breath, shook her head, and said, โDonโt worry. Thereโs no point getting angry with someone like her.โ
โRight,โ Jonathan said, patting Teresaโs head before turning to Evelyn.
โEvelyn, Iโll take you to get your blood drawn,โ he said. Then he guided Evelyn to a blood draw after she nodded.
Samples entered the lab under witness. Jonathan signed the DNA test application as the client, then locked eyes with the nurse who was about to take the samples to the lab.
Then he said pointedly, โTamper with these, and Iโll bury this hospital in lawsuits.โ
The nurse gave Peggy a meaningful look, nodded, and went inside.
Peggy scoffed, โThis is the last time to test it. Results wonโt change. Test a hundred timesโLucas stays mine. If any of you push me again, youโll regret it.โ
โEnough.โ Lucasโs voice cracked through the tension. โIf the results are the same, Iโll abandon my dreams and go abroad with you. Forever.โ
Peggyโs smile turned venomous. โRemember that promise.โ She turned around and walked off at once.
The DNA test results would take a day to come out. Jonathan and the others also left and would come back the next day.
Lucas approached Jonathan at the entry, bowing slightly. โSorry for dragging you into this. Whatever the resultโฆ Iโll stop my motherโs harassment.โ
โYou owe no apologies,โ Jonathan replied.
โSee you tomorrow.โ Lucas walked away alone, shoulders slumped.
Jonathan turned to Teresa. โIโll have the driver take you and Evelyn home. Benny and I have business.โ
Teresa nodded. As they drove home, Evelyn leaned back in her seat and suddenly sighed, โMaybe being wrong would be kinder.โ
Teresa suddenly understood what Evelyn meant. She took Evelynโs hand and said, โPeggy doesnโt deserve to be a mother. No mother calls her child โworthlessโ.โ
If Jennifer werenโt Peggyโs daughter, Teresa would think it was a good thing. Jennifer at least escaped her cruelty.
But it must have been suffocating for Lucas to live in that kind of environment for so long, and it wasnโt fair to him.
Evelyn pressed her temples. โWhat do we do now?โ
