Chapter 775

โ€˜Fake?โ€™ Everyone wondered and turned to look at Jonathan.

Then Lucas asked, โ€œJonathan, what do you mean the report might be fake?โ€

The results were damning. There was no biological link between Lucas and Evelyn. It couldnโ€™t be fake.

Jonathanโ€™s gaze locked onto Peggy, cold as a scalpel. โ€œI mean someone with resources โ€“ and a motive โ€“ couldโ€™ve swapped samples or paid for a favorable result. Authenticity unconfirmed. We retest.โ€

Peggy shot back angrily, โ€œAccusing me?โ€

Jonathan didnโ€™t deny it. With a gloomy face, he said, โ€œSuch things have happened to me many times. We redo it.โ€

Teresa looked at Jonathan and saw the coldness in his eyes.

It was just like Jennifer did to Michael, so he doubted it. Teresa realized it with icy clarity.

Jennifer had pulled this kind of trick so many times before. Was Peggy playing the trick like Jennifer? Teresa wondered.

Then Teresa said, โ€œWhy donโ€™t we just do what Jonathan suggested? Since everyoneโ€™s here, letโ€™s redo it.

โ€œWe can draw blood right now, with both sides watching as the samples are sent in, so thereโ€™s no room for doubt about the results.โ€

Peggy was getting impatient. โ€œAre you just making things hard on purpose? The result is already here, but you donโ€™t believe it and keep causing trouble. Lucas is my son, and no test changes that.โ€

Lucas remained silent. Teresa turned to Evelyn and said, โ€œMom, what do you think? Draw blood and test again? Everyoneโ€™s here now, so we can make sure the samples canโ€™t be switched.โ€

Evelyn sighed and said, โ€œFine by me. But Lucasโ€ฆโ€ She looked at Lucas and wondered if Lucas would have any objections.

Lucas remained silent. He kept his head down, pondering.

Benny chimed in, โ€œTruth fears nothing. Just retest, okay? Match twice? Case closed.โ€

Lucas came to his senses. With everyone urging him, he finally gave a small nod. โ€œAlright, I agree. If itโ€™s still negative, Iโ€™ll accept it.โ€

He would accept that this gilded cage and Peggyโ€™s smothering shadow were his life.

โ€œFine, letโ€™s retest here. You guys wonโ€™t give up until you hit a dead end, huh?โ€ Peggy sneered.

Jonathan gazed at Peggy coldly.

Peggy asked, โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong, Jonathan? Didnโ€™t you want a second test? Got something else to say?โ€

Jonathan replied sternly, โ€œChoose a different hospital.โ€

โ€œWell, switch hospitals?โ€ Peggy spread her hands mockingly. โ€œPick any hospital around here. But Lucas is my son, and nothing will change.โ€

Jonathanโ€™s glare could freeze lava. Just as he was about to speak, Benny stepped between them.

โ€œPeace treaty, folks. No need to switch hospitals. Weโ€™re not familiar with the area anyway, so letโ€™s retest here,โ€ Benny said.

โ€œLucas, come with me. Blood draw time,โ€ Benny turned to Lucas and led him away.

Peggy looked uneasy and was about to step forward, but Jonathan blocked her with his arm.

Jonathan said, โ€œWhy not call Jennifer over and have you two do a DNA test as well?โ€

Peggy froze in her tracks, her expression shifting instantly.

โ€œNo need. Daughters are worthless trash. Iโ€™ll never have one,โ€ she snapped.

Teresa couldnโ€™t take it anymore and shot back, โ€œYour own mother birthed you. Youโ€™re a woman yet look down on women. How could youโ€“โ€

Peggy shrugged it off and replied, โ€œSo what? You canโ€™t stand me? Stay away from me, okay?โ€

Teresa glared at her, but Jonathan patted Teresaโ€™s shoulder, signaling her not to get angry with a scumbag.

Teresa took a deep breath, shook her head, and said, โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Thereโ€™s no point getting angry with someone like her.โ€

โ€œRight,โ€ Jonathan said, patting Teresaโ€™s head before turning to Evelyn.

โ€œEvelyn, Iโ€™ll take you to get your blood drawn,โ€ he said. Then he guided Evelyn to a blood draw after she nodded.

Samples entered the lab under witness. Jonathan signed the DNA test application as the client, then locked eyes with the nurse who was about to take the samples to the lab.

Then he said pointedly, โ€œTamper with these, and Iโ€™ll bury this hospital in lawsuits.โ€

The nurse gave Peggy a meaningful look, nodded, and went inside.

Peggy scoffed, โ€œThis is the last time to test it. Results wonโ€™t change. Test a hundred timesโ€”Lucas stays mine. If any of you push me again, youโ€™ll regret it.โ€

โ€œEnough.โ€ Lucasโ€™s voice cracked through the tension. โ€œIf the results are the same, Iโ€™ll abandon my dreams and go abroad with you. Forever.โ€

Peggyโ€™s smile turned venomous. โ€œRemember that promise.โ€ She turned around and walked off at once.

The DNA test results would take a day to come out. Jonathan and the others also left and would come back the next day.

Lucas approached Jonathan at the entry, bowing slightly. โ€œSorry for dragging you into this. Whatever the resultโ€ฆ Iโ€™ll stop my motherโ€™s harassment.โ€

โ€œYou owe no apologies,โ€ Jonathan replied.

โ€œSee you tomorrow.โ€ Lucas walked away alone, shoulders slumped.

Jonathan turned to Teresa. โ€œIโ€™ll have the driver take you and Evelyn home. Benny and I have business.โ€

Teresa nodded. As they drove home, Evelyn leaned back in her seat and suddenly sighed, โ€œMaybe being wrong would be kinder.โ€

Teresa suddenly understood what Evelyn meant. She took Evelynโ€™s hand and said, โ€œPeggy doesnโ€™t deserve to be a mother. No mother calls her child โ€˜worthlessโ€™.โ€

If Jennifer werenโ€™t Peggyโ€™s daughter, Teresa would think it was a good thing. Jennifer at least escaped her cruelty.

But it must have been suffocating for Lucas to live in that kind of environment for so long, and it wasnโ€™t fair to him.

Evelyn pressed her temples. โ€œWhat do we do now?โ€
