โAlright,โ Jonathan said, gently ruffling Michaelโs hair.
Meanwhile, Teresa was in Nareigh when she saw that Michael had only sent her a photo of the rosary. She privately messaged Jonathan. Jonathan told her the truth: "We just got off the plane and ran into a guy who had just come back from Cerein. He was handsome, with delicate features, and he looked a bit like you."
Teresa immediately thought, โHe looks like me? Could he be my brother?โ She remembered Evelyn once saying that Peggy might have taken her child by mistake. It meant Teresa might have a brother out there.
โDid you ask him his full name? Does he have the same last name as Evelynโs maiden name? My mom said her cousin is really possessive and would insist the kid take her surname,โ Teresa pressed.
โNo idea,โ Jonathan replied. โI asked, but he didnโt reveal it.โ
Teresa felt a pang of disappointment. โWhere are you and Michael now? Are you at Candy Castle?โ
โNot yet. Weโre still in the car,โ Jonathan replied.
โHave fun then. If Mike gets too hot, take his hat off. If heโs cold, help him put on the jacket I packed in his little backpack,โ Teresa said, her motherly worry shining through.
Jonathan glanced out the window. โThe temperatureโs fine today. Cloudy. I brought extra clothes for him, too. Donโt worry so much.โ With that, he hung up.
At Jenniferโs place, Donald had already made up his mind to get a divorce. He put the papers on the table and said, โThese are divorce papers. Iโm giving you the house.โ
The divorce papers lying on the table were so glaringly harsh that Jennifer could hardly believe her eyes. She stared at Donald, whose chin was covered in stubble and who looked utterly worn out. โAre you serious? Do you really want to divorce me?โ
Donald closed his eyes for a moment and nodded. โIโve given it a lot of thought. Weโre simply not meant to be husband and wife.โ
That single phrase sent Jennifer plummeting into an endless abyss, her heart frozen in a world of ice and darkness.
โYou were the one who pursued me. You promised youโd treat me well for a lifetime. And now you say weโre not meant to be? Donald, how could you do this to me?โ Jennifer said, her voice trembling.
โSo this is all on me, huh? Jennifer, think about it. Look at what youโve done,โ Donald said, his voice heavy.
Jennifer yelled, โAll I did was fake a report and lie about being pregnant, but my feelings for you are real. How can you want a divorce just because of these things that happened?โ
Donald sounded utterly disappointed. โSo to you, all those external factors caused this, right? Even now, you still wonโt admit what youโve done wrong."
โCheryl already told me everything. She was out of town all by herself, and when she fainted, you just left her there. When she was giving birth, you knew, but you still turned your back and walked out of the hospital.
โYou never cared about my family, not my sister or my brother. You treated them terribly. Now you say you love me? Sorry, Jennifer, but I canโt accept this kind of twisted love from you.โ
โMy love is twisted?โ Jennifer thought. Her eyes filled with tears as she clenched her fingers so tightly that they hurt. She couldnโt help but think, โItโs true. When it rains, it pours. Everything seems to go wrong all at once, just like right now!โ
The pain was sharp as she met the look of utter disappointment in Donaldโs eyes. It was even worse than death. She said, โFine, I get it. Iโll change. Whatever you donโt like about me, Iโll change it.โ
โDonโt bother. Just be yourself. You donโt need to change for me,โ Donald said, his voice tired. โI was the one who couldnโt see you clearly. If I could, I wish I could go back to when we first met.โ
โI donโt want that,โ Jennifer shot back, locking eyes with him. โI donโt want to go back to that time when I had no one and nobody loved me.โ
