Chapter 753
Vincent let out a sigh and looked at Jennifer. โYou should take some time to rest. Donald told me a few days ago that youโre pregnant. Just focus on taking care of yourself and the baby for now. Work can wait.โ
Jenniferโs throat tightened suddenly. She couldnโt even imagine what Donald must have felt when he told Vincent about her pregnancy. Sheโd turned all the hope and expectations he had for her into disappointment. She took a deep breath. โI understand, Mr. Foster.โ
โAlright, you can go,โ Vincent said. โIโll handle the rest of the paperwork. Iโll just tell everyone you resigned to take care of yourself during your pregnancy.โ
โThank you,โ Jennifer replied with a trace of reluctance in her eyes as she turned to leave.
Once the door closed behind her, Jennifer slumped against it, feeling a wave of frustration and helplessness.
Still, she knew this was the ending sheโd been heading toward all along. Maybe back when that patient caused a scene, she shouldโve been punished. Maybe her medical license shouldโve been revoked right then.
The title of attending physician had always been too heavy for her, suffocating her more times than she could count. Most of the time, she just didnโt want to lose. But now, what truly scared her was the thought of losing Donald.
Jennifer took a moment to pull herself together and then went back to her office to pack up her things.
โThatโs her! I heard she faked a DNA report.โ
โBut isnโt she an attending physician? Why was she even working in the DNA testing department?โ
โWho knows? I heard that was why she got fired.โ
โGood riddance. She always had such a sour face. No wonder so many patients complained about her.โ
As Jennifer walked away, a few nurses whispered behind her back. Her fingers clenched into fists as she made her way downstairs to the parking lot.
โThatโs her!โ a womanโs voice rang out.
Suddenly, a group of unfamiliar women in their fifties appeared and rushed at her. They forced her into a corner and started punching and kicking her.
โWho are you? What do you want?โ Jennifer asked, unable to fight back. She just huddled on the ground, covering her head, and the women kept kicking and hitting her.
Suddenly, someone stepped in front of her, Jennifer instantly recognized that familiar presence. She froze for a second and then looked up in shock. It was Teresa.
Teresa threw herself in front of Jennifer, shielding her with her back and taking a couple of blows herself. Without missing a beat, she whipped out her phone and snapped over her shoulder, โGet lost. Iโve already called the cops!โ
Hearing that, those women finally backed off in a hurry.
Jennifer scrambled to her feet, anxiously looking Teresa up and down. โTeresa, what are you doing here? Are you okay?โ
โIโm fine,โ Teresa replied, turning just in time to spot one of the women trying to slip away. She raised her voice and said, โThe police are already on their way. None of you are getting away today!โ
At the police station, Jennifer was covered in bruises as Teresa pulled her along, making sure the officers saw every injury.
A police officer turned to the group of women who had attacked her. โDo you know her? Why did you hit her?โ
The women started stammering, all their earlier bravado gone in an instant. They looked completely deflated now.
After being questioned for a long time, they finally put on their most innocent faces and said, โWโwe donโt know her.โ
โIf you didnโt know her, why did you just start hitting her?โ the officer pressed.
The women exchanged nervous glances, and one of them seemed to have an idea. She quickly blurted out, โWeโฆ We escaped from a mental hospital. We werenโt in our right minds. Please just let us go.โ
Teresa rolled her eyes. She thought, โThese women look strong and full of energy. There is no way they are mentally ill.โ
Jennifer didnโt recognize any of them either, so chances were that someone had put them up to this and sent them to rough her up.
