Chapter 743
"That's perfect, I'll drive you to pick up the test report." Jonathanโs brow relaxed slightly. He just couldnโt feel at ease letting Teresa, a pregnant woman, run around by herselfโwhat if Jennifer bullied her again?
"I'm fine," Teresa said. "Itโs not appropriate for you, my ex-husband, to come with me. I still need to pick up my mom. You should just go back."
"I'll give your mom a heads-up and drive her myself," Jonathan replied, already heading for the car. Teresa reached out and grabbed his arm, and he glanced down at her hand.
Teresa slowly let go of him, sighing helplessly, "It's really not right for you to come with me to get the test results. I know youโre worried about the baby. I promise Iโll take care of everything."
Jonathan fixed his gaze on Teresa, speaking slowly and deliberately. "Taking care of the baby means taking care of yourself first."
Teresa nodded. "Got it."
"You'd better really mean it," Jonathan said. "Just be careful, and call me if anything happens." As Teresa didn't want him to go, he didnโt insist.
"Okay," Teresa replied, and then went to find Jennifer.
Jennifer was in her office, writing up patient records. She glanced up at Teresa, her tone sharp and cutting. "I kicked you out of the car, and you went straight to your ex-husband to complain. Youโre something else. Guess you're not scared of Irene anymore."
Teresa gave in. "Think whatever you want. Iโm not going to bother explaining."
She knew even if she said she hadnโt complained, Jennifer wouldnโt believe her. Jennifer only ever believed in herself, and Teresa had seen through that long ago.
Jennifer continued with a smirk, "Still defending him? You actually think heโs a good guy? Please. Like mother, like son. How dare he embarrass me at the hospital? Why doesnโt he go deal with that old witch Irene instead?"
"I donโt want to talk about this anymore," Teresa said, enunciating each word. "The testing center texted meโthe test report is out. We can go pick up the hard copy now."
Jennifer frowned, keeping at the patient records.
Teresa added, "If youโre not busy, letโs go together. That way you wonโt accuse me of faking anything."
Jennifer slammed her pen down and snapped impatiently, "Faking again! Teresa, whatโs with your attitude?"
"My attitude, huh?" Teresa took a deep breath and just gave up arguing. She wasnโt going to waste her time with Jennifer. If Jennifer didn't want to go, sheโd just go with Evelyn.
Jennifer suddenly shot to her feet, fixing Teresa with a glare. "Who knows if Miriam will try to stir up trouble again? If the test report shows weโre sisters, she has to apologize to me, and so do you."
She was in a terrible mood, feeling like the whole world was out to get her. She found fault with everyone and everything, but she vented all that anger on Teresa.
Teresa was a bit calmer. She took a deep breath, calmed herself down, and tried to reason with Jennifer. "If it turns out Miriam was just causing trouble, both she and I will apologize to youโuntil youโre satisfied."
"Fine, you said it," Jennifer replied. She dug her nails into her palm and finally felt a bit of relief.
Meanwhile, Jonathan had called a driver to bring Teresaโs car over. He didnโt want Teresa riding with Jennifer againโwhat if Jennifer kicked her out of the car once more?
Jonathan handed Teresa the car keys, looking worried. "Let me know as soon as you get the results, yeah? I need to hear them too. And whatever it says, donโt let it get to you."
Teresa nodded. "I wonโt. Promise."
She slid into the car, pulled up next to Jennifer, and rolled down the window. Without explaining anything about the car, she simply said, "Hop in. I wonโt kick you out."
Jennifer was speechless.
Teresa called Evelyn to tell her the DNA test results were out. But Evelyn had already heard from the testing center and was racing over in a taxi.
"Alright," Teresa said, ending the call. She caught Jennifer staring out the window at two little girls walking on opposite sides of the street.
One was dressed up like a princess in a sparkly pink dress, while the other wore plain, almost worn-out clothes.
Jennifer mused, "Those two girls are just like you and me."
Teresa thought to herself, 'Here she goes again, acting all dramatic.'
Jennifer let out a sigh. "Iโve always envied you. Your life has always been so smooth. You never had to worry about basic stuff like food and rent. My path wasnโt anything like yours. Iโve had to fight and claw my way up from nothing."
'Here we go again,' Teresa thought. Her feelings had shifted from initial sympathy and understanding to growing irritation. By now, hearing Jenniferโs sob story just made her skin crawl.
Seeing Teresaโs unbothered expression, Jennifer gave a self-deprecating laugh. She knew that saying all this just made her sound like she was fishing for pity.
"Iโm angry because Iโm hurt," Jennifer said. "Miriam can doubt whether Iโm your sister. But how could you question it too? You believe her over me and let your ex come after me? What do you think that makes me feel?"
Teresa took a deep breath. Sheโd promised Jonathan she wouldnโt get worked up, and she couldnโt risk upsetting the baby.
After steadying herself, she said, "I donโt want to talk about Jonathan right now. As for the test, itโs not that I donโt trust you. Itโs just that Miriam did two DNA tests, and both said youโre not my sister."
Jennifer shot back, "It doesnโt matter how many times she did it. If she wanted to fake it, she could fake it a hundred times. You just donโt trust me. If you did, youโd call out Miriam for meddling and take my sideโalways."
"And why should I always take your side?" Teresa asked. "If you hadnโt let me down and hurt me again and again, maybe I would have."
Jennifer fell silent, suddenly at a loss for words. She figured all the answers would be clear once the DNA test results were out.
Evelyn was already waiting at the entrance for Teresa and Jennifer. To keep Jennifer from getting suspicious again, the three of them went together to pick up the test reports.
Evelyn looked both anxious and conflicted. Teresa wore the same expressionโshe desperately wanted to know if Jennifer was her biological sister.
There were two test reports in totalโone for Jennifer and Evelyn, and one for Teresa and Evelyn.
Evelyn opened her and Teresaโs test report first. The result showed a 99.9% match, supporting that she and Teresa were mother and daughter.
But when Evelyn opened Jenniferโs test report, the result was completely different. The test result did not support that Jennifer and Evelyn were mother and daughter.
Evelynโs hands trembled as she looked at Jennifer. "Hannah, you really arenโt my daughter."
Jennifer snatched the test report, her brow furrowing deeply as she read the results.
