Chapter 701

"Why should I remarry you, Jonathan? So you can slowly make my life a living hell and get your revenge on me after we get married?" Teresa asked.

Jonathan raised an eyebrow and replied, "Am I that cruel in your eyes? Werenโ€™t you the one who said it was for Mikeโ€™s sake? Donโ€™t you want him to have a complete family?"

Teresa said firmly, "As long as we both love him, remarriage doesnโ€™t matter. Many divorced parents love their children just as much. I canโ€™t live under the same roof with you, pretending to be happy for our sonโ€™s sake every day."

โ€œFine,โ€ Jonathan said curtly.

Even in front of Jonathan, Teresa had to fake a smile. Jonathan stared coldly at Teresa and added, "Donโ€™t say I never gave you a chance. You used Jennifer to fake DNA reports. Iโ€™ll sue her. I wonโ€™t let her get away with this."

Teresa snapped back, "Go ahead and sue her. Do it right now."

Ever since Jonathan smashed the bracelet, Teresa kept telling herself to endure it and not argue back. As long as he wasnโ€™t hurting and could feel better, she didnโ€™t care about her feelings.

But now, Teresa had never been a pushover, and this time, she snapped.

Teresa snapped at Jonathan, "You think Iโ€™m afraid of you, Jonathan? Bring it on. Throw everything youโ€™ve got at me. If you want to ruin me or destroy our family, go ahead. Iโ€™m ready for you. Weโ€™ll fight this to the bitter end."

Jonathan sneered, "So quick to lose your temper."

Jonathan snorted, "So now you know how it feels. Since you falsely claimed our sonโ€™s name was Mike, I trusted you without question. Is this how you repay me, by playing me for a fool?"

"I never meant to trick you, Jonathan," Teresa said, her voice trembling, "I had my reasons. I just couldnโ€™t tell you."

"So whatโ€™s your excuse? You donโ€™t want to remarry me, but you still want a kid as your retirement plan?" Jonathan added.

Teresa shot back, "So thatโ€™s all I am to you? Just some shallow woman?"

"Maybe I never knew you at all," Jonathan said in a low, heavy voice, his sharply defined jawline visibly tensing.

Teresa met his gaze with cold indifference. "Youโ€™re right. Maybe I never knew you at all," she added.

"I still have sole custody, and his household registration is with me. Tell Gary to bring him back. From now on, unless itโ€™s about our son, we have nothing more to say to each other," Teresa continued.

After that, Teresa turned to leave. Sheโ€™d almost told Jonathan about the second child but decided against it.

She refused to say anything more to him.

Jonathan stood frozen. He couldnโ€™t miss the tears welling in her eyes. "Wait!" he called out.

Teresa stormed out without a backward glance, slamming the door behind her.

Jonathan was left speechless.

From the surveillance footage, Jonathan saw Teresa standing by the roadside, covering her face and sobbing. Feeling remorseful, he took a deep breath, pulled out his phone, and called her to offer his car so she wouldnโ€™t need a cab.

To his surprise, Teresa outright rejected his call.

Jonathan watched from the surveillance feed as Teresa hailed a cab and got in. Frustrated, he tossed his phone onto the table.

Hurting her did not sit well with him.

Right after being discharged, Jennifer rushed straight back to the hospital.

Just then, Vincent called and ordered her to come to his office immediately.

Jennifer took a shaky breath. From Vincentโ€™s tone on the phone, she could tell something was wrong.

Jennifer made her way to Vincentโ€™s office, her heart pounding with anxiety.

โ€œJennifer, youโ€™re here. You should know why Iโ€™ve called you in, right?โ€ Vincent said.

Jennifer nervously licked her lips and replied, โ€œMr. Foster, is this about my absence these past two days? I had a family emergency. Thatโ€™s whyโ€ฆโ€

Vincent cut in sharply and added, โ€œThatโ€™s not it.โ€ Then Vincent rose to his feet and approached Jennifer.

โ€œI remember telling you long ago that you got the deputy director role because Horizonlead Groupโ€™s CEO dined with me and mentioned it. Learning your sister was Mr. Lynnโ€™s ex-wife, I made an exception and promoted you early.โ€

Jennifer stood frozen, her hands balling into white-knuckled fists.

Jennifer said firmly, โ€œMr. Foster, I appreciate the promotion. I can do this job, and I donโ€™t need anyone pulling strings for me. This time, Iโ€™ll prove I can become department head on my own merit.โ€

โ€œOn your own merit?โ€ Vincent scoffed.

โ€œIs this how you got promoted? By abusing your power for personal gain, misusing your authority, and falsifying DNA test reports beyond your jurisdiction?โ€

All at once, Jenniferโ€™s face drained of all color.

Jennifer had just suffered a miscarriage. Sheโ€™d already lost her baby. She couldnโ€™t bear to lose her job, too.

Jennifer could only dig her nails into her palms, forcing herself to appear composed as she said, โ€œMr. Foster, I donโ€™t understand what youโ€™re talking about. Is there some kind of misunderstanding here?โ€

Vincent slammed his desk and called out, โ€œA misunderstanding? Mr. Lynn filed a formal complaint and had a DNA test at our hospital last year. You, as a gynecologist, tampered with results and falsified the report. Shame on you.โ€

Jennifer drew a shaky breath, her face growing deathly pale.

โ€œMr. Foster, thereโ€™s been a misunderstanding. It was all for my sister. I only falsified the report to protect her.โ€

Vincent interrupted. โ€œYour family matters donโ€™t concern me. As a doctor, you know right from wrong. What youโ€™ve done makes you unfit for promotion or even to practice medicine. Your actions warrant revoking your medical license."

Jennifer froze in fear. โ€˜Revoke my medical license?โ€™ she thought in shock, her mind in turmoil. She had fought so hard to become a doctor.

โ€œMr. Foster, surely this isnโ€™t necessary? I merely switched the DNA reports between my ex-brother-in-law and my nephew to shield my sister. My intentions were never malicious. I only wanted to protect her.โ€

โ€œRules are rules,โ€ Vincent said with icy precision. โ€œYour family issues donโ€™t concern me. But you broke the law, and Mr. Lynn is pressing charges. Resign now; thatโ€™s the only way youโ€™ll walk away with any dignity."

Jennifer was on the verge of breaking down. โ€œMr. Foster, please, Iโ€™m begging you. Iโ€™ve worked so hard to get here. If I lose this job, Iโ€™ll have nothing. Please, just give me one more chance.โ€

โ€œWorked so hard?โ€ Vincent scoffed.

โ€œAs far as I know, youโ€™ve had several unexcused absences and a serious surgical error that nearly caused a disaster. Frankly, I should have disciplined you long ago.โ€

Jennifer clenched her fists until her knuckles turned white, then bowed deeply and pleadingly to Vincent.

โ€œMr. Foster, Iโ€™ve learned my lesson. Please give me another chance,โ€ Jennifer pleaded desperately.

Vincent shook his head and added, โ€œDonโ€™t beg me. Plead with Mr. Lynn. You falsified his DNA results, and if he sues, losing your medical license will be the least of your problems."

Jennifer fell into a heavy silence. She thought, โ€˜Beg Jonathan? Me?โ€™

โ€œIโ€™m Teresaโ€™s sister, for Godโ€™s sake. More importantly, Iโ€™m still Donaldโ€™s wife. How could I ever stoop to beg that old witch Ireneโ€™s son?โ€
