Chapter 701
"Why should I remarry you, Jonathan? So you can slowly make my life a living hell and get your revenge on me after we get married?" Teresa asked.
Jonathan raised an eyebrow and replied, "Am I that cruel in your eyes? Werenโt you the one who said it was for Mikeโs sake? Donโt you want him to have a complete family?"
Teresa said firmly, "As long as we both love him, remarriage doesnโt matter. Many divorced parents love their children just as much. I canโt live under the same roof with you, pretending to be happy for our sonโs sake every day."
โFine,โ Jonathan said curtly.
Even in front of Jonathan, Teresa had to fake a smile. Jonathan stared coldly at Teresa and added, "Donโt say I never gave you a chance. You used Jennifer to fake DNA reports. Iโll sue her. I wonโt let her get away with this."
Teresa snapped back, "Go ahead and sue her. Do it right now."
Ever since Jonathan smashed the bracelet, Teresa kept telling herself to endure it and not argue back. As long as he wasnโt hurting and could feel better, she didnโt care about her feelings.
But now, Teresa had never been a pushover, and this time, she snapped.
Teresa snapped at Jonathan, "You think Iโm afraid of you, Jonathan? Bring it on. Throw everything youโve got at me. If you want to ruin me or destroy our family, go ahead. Iโm ready for you. Weโll fight this to the bitter end."
Jonathan sneered, "So quick to lose your temper."
Jonathan snorted, "So now you know how it feels. Since you falsely claimed our sonโs name was Mike, I trusted you without question. Is this how you repay me, by playing me for a fool?"
"I never meant to trick you, Jonathan," Teresa said, her voice trembling, "I had my reasons. I just couldnโt tell you."
"So whatโs your excuse? You donโt want to remarry me, but you still want a kid as your retirement plan?" Jonathan added.
Teresa shot back, "So thatโs all I am to you? Just some shallow woman?"
"Maybe I never knew you at all," Jonathan said in a low, heavy voice, his sharply defined jawline visibly tensing.
Teresa met his gaze with cold indifference. "Youโre right. Maybe I never knew you at all," she added.
"I still have sole custody, and his household registration is with me. Tell Gary to bring him back. From now on, unless itโs about our son, we have nothing more to say to each other," Teresa continued.
After that, Teresa turned to leave. Sheโd almost told Jonathan about the second child but decided against it.
She refused to say anything more to him.
Jonathan stood frozen. He couldnโt miss the tears welling in her eyes. "Wait!" he called out.
Teresa stormed out without a backward glance, slamming the door behind her.
Jonathan was left speechless.
From the surveillance footage, Jonathan saw Teresa standing by the roadside, covering her face and sobbing. Feeling remorseful, he took a deep breath, pulled out his phone, and called her to offer his car so she wouldnโt need a cab.
To his surprise, Teresa outright rejected his call.
Jonathan watched from the surveillance feed as Teresa hailed a cab and got in. Frustrated, he tossed his phone onto the table.
Hurting her did not sit well with him.
Right after being discharged, Jennifer rushed straight back to the hospital.
Just then, Vincent called and ordered her to come to his office immediately.
Jennifer took a shaky breath. From Vincentโs tone on the phone, she could tell something was wrong.
Jennifer made her way to Vincentโs office, her heart pounding with anxiety.
โJennifer, youโre here. You should know why Iโve called you in, right?โ Vincent said.
Jennifer nervously licked her lips and replied, โMr. Foster, is this about my absence these past two days? I had a family emergency. Thatโs whyโฆโ
Vincent cut in sharply and added, โThatโs not it.โ Then Vincent rose to his feet and approached Jennifer.
โI remember telling you long ago that you got the deputy director role because Horizonlead Groupโs CEO dined with me and mentioned it. Learning your sister was Mr. Lynnโs ex-wife, I made an exception and promoted you early.โ
Jennifer stood frozen, her hands balling into white-knuckled fists.
Jennifer said firmly, โMr. Foster, I appreciate the promotion. I can do this job, and I donโt need anyone pulling strings for me. This time, Iโll prove I can become department head on my own merit.โ
โOn your own merit?โ Vincent scoffed.
โIs this how you got promoted? By abusing your power for personal gain, misusing your authority, and falsifying DNA test reports beyond your jurisdiction?โ
All at once, Jenniferโs face drained of all color.
Jennifer had just suffered a miscarriage. Sheโd already lost her baby. She couldnโt bear to lose her job, too.
Jennifer could only dig her nails into her palms, forcing herself to appear composed as she said, โMr. Foster, I donโt understand what youโre talking about. Is there some kind of misunderstanding here?โ
Vincent slammed his desk and called out, โA misunderstanding? Mr. Lynn filed a formal complaint and had a DNA test at our hospital last year. You, as a gynecologist, tampered with results and falsified the report. Shame on you.โ
Jennifer drew a shaky breath, her face growing deathly pale.
โMr. Foster, thereโs been a misunderstanding. It was all for my sister. I only falsified the report to protect her.โ
Vincent interrupted. โYour family matters donโt concern me. As a doctor, you know right from wrong. What youโve done makes you unfit for promotion or even to practice medicine. Your actions warrant revoking your medical license."
Jennifer froze in fear. โRevoke my medical license?โ she thought in shock, her mind in turmoil. She had fought so hard to become a doctor.
โMr. Foster, surely this isnโt necessary? I merely switched the DNA reports between my ex-brother-in-law and my nephew to shield my sister. My intentions were never malicious. I only wanted to protect her.โ
โRules are rules,โ Vincent said with icy precision. โYour family issues donโt concern me. But you broke the law, and Mr. Lynn is pressing charges. Resign now; thatโs the only way youโll walk away with any dignity."
Jennifer was on the verge of breaking down. โMr. Foster, please, Iโm begging you. Iโve worked so hard to get here. If I lose this job, Iโll have nothing. Please, just give me one more chance.โ
โWorked so hard?โ Vincent scoffed.
โAs far as I know, youโve had several unexcused absences and a serious surgical error that nearly caused a disaster. Frankly, I should have disciplined you long ago.โ
Jennifer clenched her fists until her knuckles turned white, then bowed deeply and pleadingly to Vincent.
โMr. Foster, Iโve learned my lesson. Please give me another chance,โ Jennifer pleaded desperately.
Vincent shook his head and added, โDonโt beg me. Plead with Mr. Lynn. You falsified his DNA results, and if he sues, losing your medical license will be the least of your problems."
Jennifer fell into a heavy silence. She thought, โBeg Jonathan? Me?โ
โIโm Teresaโs sister, for Godโs sake. More importantly, Iโm still Donaldโs wife. How could I ever stoop to beg that old witch Ireneโs son?โ
