Chapter 665
Less than a month into our relationship, I was busy renovating and decorating our future home. All I wanted was to build a life with her. She said she wanted security, so I put the property deed only in her name, whatever it took.
Jennifer said she wanted to save up for a house, and he agreed without hesitation. Even though they sold it later, back then, he was all in, doing everything to keep her happy, never wanting to see her upset.
He brought her to meet his family full of joy, and even when she spoke bluntly, embarrassing the elders and showing no tact, he still tried his best to understand her.
He remembered every step. Every moment left a mark. He couldnโt forget the night they first became one, the dreams they shared, or how deeply he wanted to treasure her forever. He kissed her hand and swore to love and care for her always.
His heart ached deeply for all that Jennifer had endured. None of it was her fault; she had suffered traumatic experiences as a child. Her blunt and straightforward nature, and the fact that her words could sometimes sting, shouldnโt be held against her.
Donald couldnโt bring himself to continue. The memories stabbed his heart like knives. Ever since Donald fell in love with Jennifer, he had eyes only for her.
โDonald, youโre scaring me. Is something wrong? Whatโs come over you today?โ Jennifer asked warily, her face pale.
Donaldโs reddened eyes locked onto Jennifer. He saw panic in hers; that same flicker of panic heโd seen yesterday when she faced Gary. She held Garyโs hand just like this, eyes full of fear and a hint of pleading.
For the very first time, Donald angrily shook Jenniferโs hand. Jennifer was stunned and involuntarily took a step back, staring at him in complete disbelief.
Donald took a deep breath to calm himself. โI want to ask you something. If you had to choose between family and love, which would you prioritize?โ
Jenniferโs heart was racing. She thought, โHas he figured it out? No, Jennifer, donโt panic. Should I spill the beans about Mike now? That would just give it away.โ
Jennifer forced a calm smile. โSince when have you become so bored that youโd ask such pointless questions?โ she said, pretending to be composed.
Donald insisted, โI want to hear your answer.โ
โThereโs nothing to compare. Youโre both important to me; whether itโs you or Teresa, youโre all people I care about deeply, and Iโll always be devoted to you,โ Jennifer said.
Donald wondered, โIs she really sincere? Or is there something else behind it all?โ
โJennifer, have you been under a lot of stress lately?โ Donald asked gently. โI know that even though weโre married, we both need our own space. But I think if youโre having any difficulties, or I mean, if someoneโs coercing you or anything like that, you can actually tell me.โ
โWho would even dare threaten me?โ Jennifer retorted. โDonald, stop behaving like this. I donโt like it when you act this way. If you have something to say, just say it to my face.โ
โAnd what about you? Have you ever been straightforward with me? So what right do you have to demand that I be direct with you now?โ Donald thought. He said curtly, โIโm heading out.โ
As Donald turned to leave, Jennifer clung to him from behind. Just like before, she was terrified of his leaving. โI donโt know whatโs troubling you,โ she pleaded, her voice trembling, โbut my love for you is real. Youโll always love me too, wonโt you?โ
โIโm exhausted today. I need to get back to work,โ Donald said flatly, prying her hands off him one finger at a time until she had no choice but to let go.
Jennifer stood there, stunned. She thought, โHe used to always call me โdarlingโ and say, โHow could I ever leave you? I love you and Iโll never walk away.โ But today, why is he acting like this? What on earth has changed?โ
โCould he have found out about Mike? No. This canโt be.โ Jennifer panicked. She spun around and rushed straight to Michaelโs ward.
