Chapter 664
Dawn hadnโt broken yet. Jennifer saw Donald in his office. While relieved, she couldnโt help but demand, โWhy werenโt you home?โ
Donald said, โPediatrics had an emergency, and my department head called me in for overtime.โ
Jennifer thought, Pediatrics. Her eyelids twitched. โDid you see Mike and Teresa?โ she asked cautiously. โWhat time did you get here?โ
Donald replied, โAbout three in the morning.โ
Jennifer figured out the timing. Donald probably hadnโt seen Teresa; Michaelโs bed was under othersโ care, nothing to do with him.
Jennifer demanded, โIf there was an emergency at the hospital, why didnโt you call me? Do you have any idea how frantic I was when I got home to find you gone, and you wouldnโt even pick up my calls?โ
Faced with Jenniferโs barrage of questions, Donald replied flatly, โForgot.โ
โForgot?โ Jennifer couldnโt believe it. She moved closer to Donald and studied his face intently. โIs something bothering you?โ Heโs never been like this, Jennifer thought.
โNothing,โ Donald said, pressing a hand to his forehead, his eyes bloodshot from a sleepless night.
Before Jennifer came to find him, Donald had secretly sent hair samples of both Michael and his own to the hospitalโs DNA testing lab without anyone knowing.
All I can do now is wait for the results. If Mike and I are truly related by blood, he will be Jonathanโs son. This time, without Jennifer knowing, I wonโt be deceived again; the truth will come out! Donald thought.
Right now, all Donald wanted was an answer. Why on earth would Jennifer do this? All these lies, time and again. Donald looked up, his gaze fixed intently on Jennifer.
โWhat on earth is wrong with you? Why are you staring at me like that?โ Jenniferโs heart was pounding wildly in her chest. Could he have found out about Mike? No. If he knew, he wouldnโt stay silent.
Donald frowned. โJennifer, why do I suddenly feel like your face looks a little different?โ
โWhat?โ Jennifer instinctively touched her face, confused. โHow could that be? Weโve only been married for two months. How could I have changed already!โ
Donald said, โI donโt know. Itโs just, I feel like youโve changed. And maybe itโs not just you, maybe Iโve changed too, havenโt I?โ Jenniferโs heart plummeted.
Jennifer asked, โDonald, what do you mean? Are you already tired of me, barely two months into our marriage? Weโve been through so much together, from the moment we got to know each other, to me staying by your side after your car accident, dating, getting engaged, and finally getting married. Every step of our journey has been hard-won.โ
How could he say Iโve changed? Jennifer thought. Iโve already lost the support of my best friend and my sister. Donald is my only anchor now. If he even abandons me, what will I do?
Donald put a hand over his eyes, not wanting Jennifer to see his exhaustion or the tears welling up.
They had come a long way together. Donald courted Jennifer for a long time. He even transferred to another hospital for her, treating her like a precious goddess. He still clearly remembered the day she said she was leaving Nareigh; his heart broke.
And then came that fateful car accident. When he protected her, his only thought was her safety. She stayed by his side, and when he finally woke up, she told him she wasnโt leaving after all.
Donald thought, The memory of our first kiss is still vivid in my mind. When Jennifer agreed to date me, I was so thrilled that I made a Facebook post, the first in ages, announcing it to all my colleagues.
