Chapter 655

Jennder was in floods of tears. Donald left before she could tell him that she was afraid of being alone at night because she always dreamed of him, losing the child in her belly, losing everything she cherished. Tonight, once again, sheโ€™d have dreams. She crumpled to the floor, hugging herself tightly.

Jonathan returned to his apartment in Luvaston Estates. Actually, it wouldโ€™ve been a shorter drive to Forlisle Hose Estates from the hospital, but for some reason he took the longer route back to Luviston Estates. He felt more at home at Luviston Estates.

Alone on this quiet night, Jonathan reclined on the ala with his eyes closed, his grandfatherโ€™s words echoing in his mind.

โ€œJonathan, Donald, Gary, listen to me. Iโ€™m growing old, and Iโ€™ve decided against surgery,โ€ Hayden declared firmly.

โ€œGrandpa, thereโ€™s a good chance the surgery will be successful,โ€ Jonathan said reassuringly.

โ€œDonโ€™t try to fool me,โ€ Hayden grumbled. โ€œI know well how risky surgery is."

Hayden said peacefully, โ€œIโ€™ve lived long enough, and I have no regrets. If itโ€™s my time, then so be it."

โ€œIf you really care about me, Jonathan, go get remarried, and Gary, find someone and settle down. I donโ€™t want to die with it on my chest. Donald, I want to see your child before I die."

โ€œDonald,โ€

โ€œI used to dream about grandbabies. Now? I just hope you remarry Teresa.โ€

Snapping out of his thoughts, Jonathan picked up his phone, which heโ€™d checked countless times. His brow furrowed at the sight of Teresaโ€™s number and the missed phone calls. He put the phone back on the table impatiently.

Jonathan thought, โ€˜After I told her to stay out of his family matters, Teresa never called me again. It happens every time. Unless I gave her a way out, she would never back down.โ€™ Heโ€™d checked his phone again and again today, terrified of missing any message or call from her. โ€œIt turns out I was just overthinking things!โ€

Teresa tossed and turned all night. She knew sheโ€™d never speak to Jonathan again, but she wanted to visit Hayden. Teresa rose very early while Michael was sound asleep. She arrived at Nareigh First Hospital around 7 a.m., and the lobby was already packed with patients lining up for registration.

Putting on her sunglasses, Teresa inquired about Haydenโ€™s ward and headed upstairs with a bouquet of flowers and several bags. Werner was trying to help Hayden with some food, but the old man was in an agitated state and snapped, โ€œGet out! I donโ€™t want to see you.โ€

Werner finally got what he deserved. His wife had left him, his children despised him and wouldnโ€™t even call him โ€œDad,โ€ and now his father didnโ€™t want to see him.

โ€œDad, there is nobody here but me. Please eat something. Youโ€™ve got a check up coming up,โ€ implored Werner.

Hayden grumbled, โ€œWere you trying to drag use into surgery? No way. Donโ€™t my..." Just as Hayden turned away, a knock sounded at the door. Werner looked up to see...

โ€œTeresa, what brings you here?โ€ asked Werner.

Hearing Teresaโ€™s name, Hayden instantly spun around.

โ€œHayden, I heard you were sick and came to see you,โ€ Teresa said with concern.

Teresa placed the gifts sheโ€™d bought on the table and discreetly tucked an expensive item into the bouquet. She was shocked to see how he looked now, her eyes red.

โ€œTeresa, come here and let me look at you. Werenโ€™t you supposed to be in Gorthany? Oh dear, why are you crying? Iโ€™m fine. Iโ€™ll get better soon," Hayden said quickly.

Teresa wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes. Hayden told Werner to leave the room. With a heavy sigh, Werner put down the bowl and walked out. Teresa walked up to help Hayden.

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to do that. I can help myself," Hayden insisted.

But Haydenโ€™s hands trembled so much he couldnโ€™t hold the spoon steady, and it clattered to the floor. Teresa picked it up, rinsed it with water, and said gently, โ€œHayden, let me help you. You canโ€™t afford to miss meals.โ€

Hayden sighed, โ€œAlright.โ€ Hayden finally gave in.

After finishing the gruel, Hayden said, โ€œTeresa, hand me my phone. Iโ€™m going to call Jonathan and tell him to come over and meet you.โ€

Teresa quickly waved her hand and said, โ€œNo need, Hayden, I have some business to tend to, so Iโ€™ll be leaving soon.โ€ She wanted to leave early, in case Irene showed up.

Hayden sighed, โ€œLast time, Jennifer told me that youโ€™d gone to Gorthany and would never come back to Narigh. I thought that maybe you and Jonathan really werenโ€™t meant to be.โ€

โ€œI went on a twoโ€“day business trip. Maybe Iโ€™m not coming back next time.โ€ Teresa said, lowering her head. โ€œIโ€™m sorry I let you down, Hayden, but Jonathan and I truly werenโ€™t meant to be.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m okay. But I know you two still have feelings for each other.โ€ Hayden was unwilling to give up, his weathered hand gently rubbing Teresaโ€™s hands. Hearing a familiar voice outside the door, Teresa snapped back to reality. She stood up and said hurriedly. โ€œTime to go. Iโ€™ll visit you again when I have time.โ€

โ€œTeresa, wait.โ€ Hayden wanted to give her some gifts from his friends and relatives, but Teresa had already left.

Irene saw a slender figure in a trench coat and sunglasses stepping out of Haydenโ€™s ward.

Irene frowned and asked Werner who was coming over, โ€œWhoโ€™s that?โ€

โ€œJonathanโ€™s wife. Well, exโ€“wife,โ€ said Werner.

โ€œYou mean she is Teresa? What was she doing here?โ€ asked Irene.

โ€œShe came to visit my dad with a lot of stuff,โ€ said Werner.

Ireneโ€™s eyes narrowed as she hurried after Teresa. Just as Teresa was about to get into her car in the parking lot, Irene seized her wrist and demanded, โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re just Jonathanโ€™s exโ€“wife! You have no right to visit Hayden. Most of us in the family wonโ€™t be so nice to you," Irene said sharply.

Teresa shook off Ireneโ€™s hand and gave her a weary smile. โ€œAlright, alright, say whatever you want. Mrs. Lynn, I quit. Why donโ€™t you go find someone you like for your son! If he doesnโ€™t want me, can I leave now?โ€

Irene scoffed, โ€œYou must go. There are dozens of girls for Jonathan to choose from.โ€

All her life, Teresa had never competed with anyone for anything.

Teresa thought, If love is something I have to compete for or snatch away, then Iโ€™d rather not have it.

But Ireneโ€™s words still upset Teresa.

โ€œIn your eyes, are women just tools for your son to choose from? Youโ€™re also a woman. You think of yourself as that?โ€ said Teresa defiantly.

โ€œYou!โ€ Irene was silenced by Teresaโ€™s words. Without another word, Teresa calmly got into her car.

Irene looked at Teresa in the driverโ€™s seat and said sarcastically, โ€œMs. Kelly comes to visit Hayden very often. Hayden adores her and wants her to marry Jonathan. That match is practically sealed.โ€

Teresa clutched at the steering wheel.
