Chapter 634
โWhat exactly do you want from me?โ Teresa shot back at Jennifer. Jennifer always claimed that Teresa didnโt care about her feelings, but if Teresa really didnโt give a damn about her feelings, Teresa couldโve just come clean days ago.
But when Teresa came to after her bout of acute gastroenteritis, the first person she saw was Jennifer. A thought flashed through her mind: they were family, and they should want the best for each other.
Jennifer let out a long sigh. โIโd made up my mind to wash my hands of you. If youโre set on telling, I canโt stop you. But things are different. Jonathan is Donaldโs confidant. If we come clean now, Iโm as good as dead.โ
โThat wouldnโt be happening. Just try to lighten up. When the time comes, Iโll give you 30% of Teresouth Groupโs dividends. Weโre sisters, and thatโs all I can do for you.โ With that, Teresa grabbed her car keys and headed for the door.
โWhere are you going?โ Jennifer demanded.
โIโm going to pick up Michael,โ Teresa shot back. โDo you really think Iโd just abandon my son?โ
Jennifer clamped down fiercely on Teresaโs wrist, her grip almost painful. โAre you going to use this chance to confess everything to Jonathan? Are you really just going to abandon me?โ
Teresa yanked her hand free. โWhether I confess or not is my call. Back off.โ
Jennifer choked out, โIโve told you everything. Iโm literally begging you. Why do you still not care how I feel?โ
Teresa glared at Jennifer. โHow much longer am I supposed to cater to your feelings? So your feelings matter, but mine and Michaelโs donโt? Why canโt you put yourself in our shoes for once? I canโt hide it much longer.โ
Teresa was determined to keep both Michael and the baby in her womb. Without waiting for Jennifer to respond, she turned on her heel and strode away.
Then, Jennifer clutched Teresaโs hand tightly again before collapsing weakly to the ground.
Teresa froze, her body stiffening. She turned around and saw Jenniferโwho was always so proudโnow slumped on the floor, her legs giving way beneath her.
Jenniferโs hair hung loose, covering her face, her lips deathly pale.
โPlease, Iโm begging you. Donโt tell anyone now. I really canโt afford to lose Donald. More than anything, I just want a chance to prove myself. I can make it to department head on my own."
โIโm not some incompetent nobody. I donโt want people calling me useless. Just give me a few more months. Iโll find you a place to stay, and after you give birth and are ready to come back, Iโll hire you a postpartum caregiver.โ
โEnough!โ Teresa clenched her fists so tightly her knuckles turned white. โGet up,โ Teresa snapped. โThis display of yours disgusts me.โ
โWhat?โ Jennifer arched an eyebrow in bewilderment.
Teresa glared down at Jennifer. โNow youโre playing the victim and making me out to be the villain. Donโt you realize how revolting this is?โ
Jennifer clenched her jaw, saying nothing.
Teresa averted her gaze, her eyes bloodshot. โGet up now. If you miscarry, thatโs on you, not me.โ
Jennifer was still on the floor, slumped weakly, her body showing no sign of reaction.
Teresa shot her a cold look. โFine. If you wonโt get up, then stay there. Iโm out of here.โ With a loud slam, Teresa left, and scalding tears welled up in Jenniferโs eyes.
Teresa went to Miriamโs place to pick up Michael.
โMommy, your eyes are all red!โ Michael looked up, his big eyes full of concern as he gazed into Teresaโs.
Teresa gently stroked Michaelโs hair, saying nothing.
After getting in the car, Michael kept asking Teresa, โMommy, were you crying?โ His big eyes were fixed intently on her.
โBuckle up, sweetie,โ Teresa said, glancing at the rearview mirror while quickly wiping away a tear. โI missed you so much that I started crying on the way here.โ
Michael tilted his little head. โBut itโs only been two days since we last saw each other.โ
Teresa smiled as she stopped at the red light, then added softly, โYou know, even a day without you feels like an eternity. By the way, do you remember the promise I made you?โ
โYou mean that thing about Mr. Lime being my daddy?โ
โMhm, thatโs right,โ Teresa said softly.
โYay!โ Michael excitedly raised his hand. โMommy, you really meant it? Mr. Lime can be my daddy?โ
โIโll talk to him about it in the next day or two, okay?โ
Michael fretted, โBut Mommy, what if Mr. Lime says no? Wouldnโt that be super embarrassing for us?โ
Teresa said, โHe wouldnโt say no, sweetie.โ
Before they knew it, their conversation had carried them all the way to Rosary Estates. Gary was waiting outside her apartment door.
โMommy, itโs that weird man who pulled my hair!โ Michael instantly went on high alert when he spotted Gary, but still positioned himself protectively in front of Teresa.
Teresa gently stroked his head and said, โSweetie. Heโs Uncle Gary.โ
โHuh? Mommy, you know him?โ Michael asked with a playful grin.
Before Teresa could respond, Gary stood up with a chuckle. He was delighted to meet Michael. He crouched down to Michaelโs eye level and said gently, โMike, Iโm sorry for pulling your hair. Can you forgive me?โ
Michael crossed his little arms and huffed, โHmph. I wonโt forgive you until I forget what you did.โ
Gary smiled, grabbed a bag of treats by his feet, and said to Michael, โHow about I make it up to you with these goodies, huh?โ
โHumphโฆโ Michael turned his face away with a huff, acting all proud. He wasnโt the kind of kid you could bribe that easily.
Teresa gently ruffled Michaelโs hair and coaxed him to forgive Gary.
Michael, still clinging to Teresaโs leg, finally gave a reluctant nod.
Gary gazed at Michaelโs carefree little face.
Once inside, with Michael fast asleep, Gary turned to Teresa and asked, โSo, what did Jennifer say?โ
Teresaโs face hardened. โGo ask her yourself,โ she said flatly. โThereโs no reasoning with her.โ
โWhatโs wrong? Did something happen?โ Gary asked, concern evident in his voice.
Teresa explained, โDonald was short on cash, and Jonathan came to his rescue. Now, Donald follows Jonathanโs lead in everything. Whatโs more, after Werner framed Jonathanโs father, Donald feels even more indebted to him. Jenniferโs terrified theโฆโ
Gary said, โJennifer must really love Donald, right? Thatโs why sheโs so terrified.โ
โHonestly, I think what sheโs really afraid of is losing her job.โ
Gary shook his head, pondering for a moment. โI think her fear of losing Donald is even greater. Sheโs always been love starved. Thatโs why sheโs so on edge now. Sheโs terrified of losing the one person who truly brought her comfort.โ
Teresa fell silent.
Gary gave Teresaโs shoulder a reassuring pat. โAnyway, just go ahead and tell Jonathan. Iโll shoulder the burden for you and take on Jenniferโs share of the consequences.โ
Teresa fell into a long silence. โTomorrow, Iโll come clean with Jonathan.โ
