Chapter 634

โ€œWhat exactly do you want from me?โ€ Teresa shot back at Jennifer. Jennifer always claimed that Teresa didnโ€™t care about her feelings, but if Teresa really didnโ€™t give a damn about her feelings, Teresa couldโ€™ve just come clean days ago.

But when Teresa came to after her bout of acute gastroenteritis, the first person she saw was Jennifer. A thought flashed through her mind: they were family, and they should want the best for each other.

Jennifer let out a long sigh. โ€œIโ€™d made up my mind to wash my hands of you. If youโ€™re set on telling, I canโ€™t stop you. But things are different. Jonathan is Donaldโ€™s confidant. If we come clean now, Iโ€™m as good as dead.โ€

โ€œThat wouldnโ€™t be happening. Just try to lighten up. When the time comes, Iโ€™ll give you 30% of Teresouth Groupโ€™s dividends. Weโ€™re sisters, and thatโ€™s all I can do for you.โ€ With that, Teresa grabbed her car keys and headed for the door.

โ€œWhere are you going?โ€ Jennifer demanded.

โ€œIโ€™m going to pick up Michael,โ€ Teresa shot back. โ€œDo you really think Iโ€™d just abandon my son?โ€

Jennifer clamped down fiercely on Teresaโ€™s wrist, her grip almost painful. โ€œAre you going to use this chance to confess everything to Jonathan? Are you really just going to abandon me?โ€

Teresa yanked her hand free. โ€œWhether I confess or not is my call. Back off.โ€

Jennifer choked out, โ€œIโ€™ve told you everything. Iโ€™m literally begging you. Why do you still not care how I feel?โ€

Teresa glared at Jennifer. โ€œHow much longer am I supposed to cater to your feelings? So your feelings matter, but mine and Michaelโ€™s donโ€™t? Why canโ€™t you put yourself in our shoes for once? I canโ€™t hide it much longer.โ€

Teresa was determined to keep both Michael and the baby in her womb. Without waiting for Jennifer to respond, she turned on her heel and strode away.

Then, Jennifer clutched Teresaโ€™s hand tightly again before collapsing weakly to the ground.

Teresa froze, her body stiffening. She turned around and saw Jenniferโ€“who was always so proudโ€“now slumped on the floor, her legs giving way beneath her.

Jenniferโ€™s hair hung loose, covering her face, her lips deathly pale.

โ€œPlease, Iโ€™m begging you. Donโ€™t tell anyone now. I really canโ€™t afford to lose Donald. More than anything, I just want a chance to prove myself. I can make it to department head on my own."

โ€œIโ€™m not some incompetent nobody. I donโ€™t want people calling me useless. Just give me a few more months. Iโ€™ll find you a place to stay, and after you give birth and are ready to come back, Iโ€™ll hire you a postpartum caregiver.โ€

โ€œEnough!โ€ Teresa clenched her fists so tightly her knuckles turned white. โ€œGet up,โ€ Teresa snapped. โ€œThis display of yours disgusts me.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Jennifer arched an eyebrow in bewilderment.

Teresa glared down at Jennifer. โ€œNow youโ€™re playing the victim and making me out to be the villain. Donโ€™t you realize how revolting this is?โ€

Jennifer clenched her jaw, saying nothing.

Teresa averted her gaze, her eyes bloodshot. โ€œGet up now. If you miscarry, thatโ€™s on you, not me.โ€

Jennifer was still on the floor, slumped weakly, her body showing no sign of reaction.

Teresa shot her a cold look. โ€œFine. If you wonโ€™t get up, then stay there. Iโ€™m out of here.โ€ With a loud slam, Teresa left, and scalding tears welled up in Jenniferโ€™s eyes.

Teresa went to Miriamโ€™s place to pick up Michael.

โ€œMommy, your eyes are all red!โ€ Michael looked up, his big eyes full of concern as he gazed into Teresaโ€™s.

Teresa gently stroked Michaelโ€™s hair, saying nothing.

After getting in the car, Michael kept asking Teresa, โ€œMommy, were you crying?โ€ His big eyes were fixed intently on her.

โ€œBuckle up, sweetie,โ€ Teresa said, glancing at the rearview mirror while quickly wiping away a tear. โ€œI missed you so much that I started crying on the way here.โ€

Michael tilted his little head. โ€œBut itโ€™s only been two days since we last saw each other.โ€

Teresa smiled as she stopped at the red light, then added softly, โ€œYou know, even a day without you feels like an eternity. By the way, do you remember the promise I made you?โ€

โ€œYou mean that thing about Mr. Lime being my daddy?โ€

โ€œMhm, thatโ€™s right,โ€ Teresa said softly.

โ€œYay!โ€ Michael excitedly raised his hand. โ€œMommy, you really meant it? Mr. Lime can be my daddy?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll talk to him about it in the next day or two, okay?โ€

Michael fretted, โ€œBut Mommy, what if Mr. Lime says no? Wouldnโ€™t that be super embarrassing for us?โ€

Teresa said, โ€œHe wouldnโ€™t say no, sweetie.โ€

Before they knew it, their conversation had carried them all the way to Rosary Estates. Gary was waiting outside her apartment door.

โ€œMommy, itโ€™s that weird man who pulled my hair!โ€ Michael instantly went on high alert when he spotted Gary, but still positioned himself protectively in front of Teresa.

Teresa gently stroked his head and said, โ€œSweetie. Heโ€™s Uncle Gary.โ€

โ€œHuh? Mommy, you know him?โ€ Michael asked with a playful grin.

Before Teresa could respond, Gary stood up with a chuckle. He was delighted to meet Michael. He crouched down to Michaelโ€™s eye level and said gently, โ€œMike, Iโ€™m sorry for pulling your hair. Can you forgive me?โ€

Michael crossed his little arms and huffed, โ€œHmph. I wonโ€™t forgive you until I forget what you did.โ€

Gary smiled, grabbed a bag of treats by his feet, and said to Michael, โ€œHow about I make it up to you with these goodies, huh?โ€

โ€œHumphโ€ฆโ€ Michael turned his face away with a huff, acting all proud. He wasnโ€™t the kind of kid you could bribe that easily.

Teresa gently ruffled Michaelโ€™s hair and coaxed him to forgive Gary.

Michael, still clinging to Teresaโ€™s leg, finally gave a reluctant nod.

Gary gazed at Michaelโ€™s carefree little face.

Once inside, with Michael fast asleep, Gary turned to Teresa and asked, โ€œSo, what did Jennifer say?โ€

Teresaโ€™s face hardened. โ€œGo ask her yourself,โ€ she said flatly. โ€œThereโ€™s no reasoning with her.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? Did something happen?โ€ Gary asked, concern evident in his voice.

Teresa explained, โ€œDonald was short on cash, and Jonathan came to his rescue. Now, Donald follows Jonathanโ€™s lead in everything. Whatโ€™s more, after Werner framed Jonathanโ€™s father, Donald feels even more indebted to him. Jenniferโ€™s terrified theโ€ฆโ€

Gary said, โ€œJennifer must really love Donald, right? Thatโ€™s why sheโ€™s so terrified.โ€

โ€œHonestly, I think what sheโ€™s really afraid of is losing her job.โ€

Gary shook his head, pondering for a moment. โ€œI think her fear of losing Donald is even greater. Sheโ€™s always been love starved. Thatโ€™s why sheโ€™s so on edge now. Sheโ€™s terrified of losing the one person who truly brought her comfort.โ€

Teresa fell silent.

Gary gave Teresaโ€™s shoulder a reassuring pat. โ€œAnyway, just go ahead and tell Jonathan. Iโ€™ll shoulder the burden for you and take on Jenniferโ€™s share of the consequences.โ€

Teresa fell into a long silence. โ€œTomorrow, Iโ€™ll come clean with Jonathan.โ€
