“I know you’re angry, but do you think I wanted this?” Gary said, his voice full of frustration. “The last thing I wanted was to be Warner’s son or Donald’s brother. It’s not like I had any say in it."
"Things have already come to this. If you don’t want anything to do with me and we’re no longer friends, I understand and respect that. I only came back this time to sort out Mike’s situation, and after that, I’ll leave Nareigh.”
Jennifer nodded, a cold smirk on her lips. “You’re right. If it weren’t for discussing Mike’s situation, I wouldn’t have agreed to see you. Frankly, I have no desire to see you at all.”
“That’s enough!” Teresa snapped. “Stop arguing in my house. I’m sick of it. Are you two done yet? Both of you sit down.”
Gary fell silent.
Jennifer pressed her lips together. “Teresa, you’ve just been discharged. Please, try not to get upset.”
Teresa snapped, “Who do you think I’m angry at? I only called you here because of Mike’s situation. I don’t want to hear any more of your nonsense.”
Gary looked around and then asked, “Where’s Mike?”
Teresa rubbed her temples. “Mike’s still at Miriam’s. He hasn’t come back yet.”
“Then I’ll call Jonathan and have him come over,” Gary said firmly. “Let’s sort this out face to face.”
Teresa had no objections. In fact, she preferred to get this over with quickly.
Jennifer strongly objected. Just then, her phone rang and she answered, “I’m at Teresa’s place now. Mm, I’ll be back soon.” After hanging up, she told them, “Donald needs me for something urgent. I have to go back."
“Don’t you two dare do anything without my permission,” Jennifer warned sharply. “Whatever you’re going to discuss, it can wait until I get back. We need to think this through carefully.” With that, Jennifer left.
Gary stood up and gazed out the window at Jennifer’s retreating figure, a flicker of loss in his eyes. He knew that after all these years, their friendship would never be the same.
Gary said to Teresa, “Jennifer told me she deeply regrets introducing you to me. Now, whenever she looks at me, all I see in her eyes is pure disgust.”
“That’s just how Jennifer is. Whenever things don’t go her way, she acts like the whole world owes her something. It isn’t your fault. It’s just that you and Donald becoming brothers is hard for her to accept.”
Gary sniffled, composing himself. “Alright, enough about me. Let’s talk about Mike. Once the truth about Mike comes out, Jonathan will definitely revisit the previous DNA test. Jennifer won’t be able to escape responsibility.”
Teresa said, “I’ve given Jennifer time to prepare. Things are out of my hands now. All I want is for Mike to go to preschool without any worries. I just hope he can live in the sunshine, just like you.”
Gary suddenly realized what Teresa meant. “He will,” he promised.
He confessed that he deliberately instructed Jennifer to conceal the report, while Teresa herself was completely unaware, leaving her in an impossible bind.
“You really don’t have to do this. I don’t need your help,” Teresa said firmly.
“I must,” Gary insisted. “I told you, I don’t want to hurt you or Jennifer. Jonathan is usually soft-hearted, but this time I can’t be sure. He has his limits.”
Teresa fell silent. Deep down, she knew Jonathan could never just stand by and do nothing.
Night after night, she was haunted by dreams of the way he looked at her with that heart-wrenching mix of disappointment and hatred in his eyes. Maybe those nightmares would come true after all.
