Chapter 611

Jonathan had just stepped off the plane when he got a message from Sanford. Liora wanted to come clean about everything that had happened back then. She wanted to tell the whole story, right in front of Jonathan and Irene.

Jonathan relaxed a bit. That was exactly why he came to Shavilleโ€”to find out what really happened. He also wondered why Irene hated Liora so much but still seemed powerless, as if Liora held some kind of control over her.

Irene rushed over just as Jonathan arrived at the hospital. She tried to pull him away, but he let go of her hand. โ€œSince weโ€™re already here, letโ€™s hear what she has to say.โ€

Irene snapped back, โ€œThat womanโ€™s crazy. She even said Wernerโ€™s kid was your dadโ€™s! Sheโ€™ll say anything.โ€

Jonathan stared at her and said, โ€œSo Iโ€™m the fool? Iโ€™m going to believe whatever she says?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m saying donโ€™t waste your time arguing with her. Now that we know Sanfordโ€™s not your dadโ€™s, Iโ€™m done with this. Letโ€™s go!โ€

Jonathan pressed the elevator button and said, โ€œI need to see her today.โ€

Irene realized she couldnโ€™t stop him and reluctantly followed, worry written all over her face. When they got to Lioraโ€™s hospital room, Irene tried to rush in first, pushing past Jonathan, but the room was empty.

The bed was neat, but Liora was gone. Irene panicked. โ€œWhere is she?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re all here?โ€ A familiar voice came from behind.

Irene turned and saw Sanford supporting a weak-looking Liora. She wore her usual pink clothes, which made her look even paler. Her shiny, clean shoes reminded Irene of the first time they met.

Irene hurried over and demanded, โ€œWhat are you doing dressed like that? What kind of stunt is this?โ€

Liora coughed weakly and said, โ€œYou donโ€™t understand. The doctors say Iโ€™m critical and wonโ€™t keep me here any longer. I donโ€™t want to spend my last days stuck in a hospital room.

โ€œSanfordโ€™s taking me home. I want to see the flowers and grass along the road. I want to see the world one last time.โ€

Irene thought for a moment. โ€œFine, but why did you call Jonathan and me here? We donโ€™t have time for this. Jonathanโ€™s busy. We have to get back to Nareigh.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s good. I want to go back to Nareigh, too,โ€ Liora said.

Irene was shocked. โ€œWhat?โ€

Liora spoke slowly and clearly, โ€œI havenโ€™t been back in decades. Itโ€™s my hometown. I want to see it one more time.โ€

Irene gave Liora a cold look. Sanford spoke up for his mom. โ€œI talked with her. She wants to go back to Nareigh and tell me everything about you two. I think you and Mr. Lynn would want to hear it. Letโ€™s meet there.โ€

Sanford helped Liora past Irene and then walked over to Jonathan. He looked at Jonathan. His expression was different, no more anger or impatience. It was calm.

Not long ago, the two of them sat together by Starlace River, drinking beer. Sanford turned and gave Jonathan a faint, thoughtful smile.

Then he said, โ€œMr. Lynn, sorry to bother you, but can you help us book a private plane? My momโ€™s health isnโ€™t good enough for commercial flights. Iโ€™ll send you the money for the ticket.โ€

โ€œNo need,โ€ Jonathan said. โ€œIโ€™ll book a flight tonight. Itโ€™s better to settle this as soon as possible.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ Sanford agreed. โ€œIf needed, you can bring a trusted lawyer. Thatโ€™s what my mom wants, too. She said some things might involve other people.โ€

Suddenly, Irene stepped forward and grabbed Jonathanโ€™s arm. โ€œJonathan, donโ€™t get involved. Let them handle it, just mother and son. After all, sheโ€™s your uncleโ€™s kid, not your dadโ€™s!โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry,โ€ Liora said weakly. โ€œI wonโ€™t say anything else. Iโ€™ll only talk about what happened back then. I wonโ€™t harm you.โ€

Irene didnโ€™t believe her. โ€œMom, letโ€™s go,โ€ Sanford said, already supporting Liora as they prepared to leave.

โ€œWait!โ€ Irene tried to follow, but Jonathan stopped her.

โ€œWe need to pack and head back to Nareigh. You should pack your stuff at the hotel too,โ€ he said.

โ€œJonathan,โ€ Irene looked at him again, โ€œYou have to believe me. No matter what Liora says, I didnโ€™t do it on purpose. Your dadโ€™s deathโ€”โ€

She choked and stopped talking. Jonathanโ€™s tone sharpened. โ€œWhat about his death?โ€

โ€œNothing,โ€ Irene swallowed hard, eyes full of pain and sorrow. โ€œYour dadโ€™s death has nothing to do with me.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean? Youโ€™re saying my dadโ€™s death is connected to you? Did you do something? Did Liora catch you? Is that why youโ€™ve been avoiding her all these years?โ€ Jonathan asked.

Irene stayed silent. Jonathan narrowed his eyes and got serious. โ€œTell me now what happened back then. Donโ€™t let Liora tell it first.โ€

โ€œJonathan, I honestly donโ€™t know how to say it,โ€ Irene said.

โ€œIโ€™ll give you one day. Think carefully if you want to tell me the truth. If not, and Liora tells it first, youโ€™ll face the consequences.โ€

Jonathan turned and left. Irene saw the disappointment in his eyes. It was like he blamed her for hiding things. He looked at her as a mother who had done something shameful. Irene collapsed against the wall, pale and weak.

โ€œMom, weโ€™re here,โ€ Sanford said. It was early morning. In Nareigh, Liora looked at the landmark buildings at Central Plaza. The tall skyscrapers were so different from when she left.

She sat in the car, reluctant to take her eyes off the view. She said to Sanford, โ€œNareigh really has grown. Hereโ€ฆโ€

Liora paused when she saw the towering Horizonlead Group building. She quietly watched the business empire. The car drove five more minutes before turning onto another road. Then she looked away.

โ€œThatโ€™s Jonathanโ€™s company,โ€ Sanford said. โ€œItโ€™s listed overseas, but he returned to Nareigh three years ago.โ€

โ€œNo wonder heโ€™s Yorickโ€™s son. Heโ€™s really capable. With his dadโ€™s genes, he canโ€™t be bad,โ€ Liora said.

Sanford fell silent. Liora hurried to add, โ€œIโ€™m not just remembering Yorick, donโ€™t get me wrong.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay. I know,โ€ Sanford said calmly. Then Sanford said plainly, โ€œI admit, Jonathan is a very impressive man.โ€
