Chapter 605
He didnโt say a word. He just looked at Sanford, his expression hard to read. Sanford, on the other hand, clearly just wanted answers. Jonathan found himself watching it all like an outsider. From where he stood, it suddenly struck him: Werner and Sanford actually looked alike.
Teresa had mentioned it more than once. She said Werner and Sanford had similar features. Jonathan never gave it much thought until this moment.
By the time he snapped out of it, Werner was already gone. Sanford had let him go. He turned to Jonathan and asked if he still wanted to watch the rest of the surveillance footage.
Jonathan raised an eyebrow slightly. His face looked tense and a little clouded. Then a loud ringtone cut through the silence. Sanford picked up. It was the nurse watching over Liora. She said Liora was in bad shape.
His mind went blank. He didnโt hesitate. He ran straight to the hospital room, stumbling a few times on the way there.
He didnโt expect to find Werner already standing by Lioraโs bed. He rushed in, shoved Werner out of the way, and told him to get lost.
He held Lioraโs hand tightly. โMom, do not leave me. Youโll be OK.โ
Lioraโs voice was faint. She managed to whisper a few words. โDo not run around like that.โ
โSorry. I just wanted to find out the truth. I didnโt want to be left all alone after you were gone, still clueless like a fool. I was scared youโd get hurt, and was afraid I couldnโt bear that pain for you,โ said Sanford.
Tears blurred his eyes and started falling. Lioraโs eyes filled with tears too. She moved her lips, like she was about to say something.
Footsteps echoed in the hallway. The door swung open. Cathy walked in. She came to find Werner. And there he was, just like she had guessed. She lost it and asked him, โIs Liora the one calling you? Have you been sending her money?โ
She demanded, โWhat kind of relationship do you have with this woman? Why do you keep showing up here?โ
Werner snapped. โStop with the drama.โ He asked, โWhat kind of relationship do you think I could have with someone lying in a hospital bed?โ
But Cathy wasnโt done. She kept pressing, โWhy did Liora call you? Why are you coming to see her?โ
She had thought it all through on the way over. If Werner had been coming to Shaville just to see Liora, then it all fit.
The money transfers she saw on his phone, the hospital paymentsโit all made sense now. The woman who came between them, the so-called mistress, was Liora.
She didnโt want to believe it. But she couldnโt think of anyone else that close to Werner. It had to be her.
Werner tried to drag Cathy out. But she wouldnโt leave this time. She didnโt care that Liora was sick. She lost all control and rushed to her bedside and screamed, โWhy did you ruin my marriage?
โWhy did Werner give you so much money? Why did you have to be the mistress?โ
Sanford exploded. He shouted, โMy mom is not a mistress!โ He pushed Cathy aside. She stumbled, barely staying on her feet, and broke into tears.
Her crying only made Sanford more on edge. But what really got to him was that Liora still wasnโt saying anything.
He looked at her, begging for an explanation. โMom, say something, anything, to prove youโre not a mistress.โ He asked, โIs it true that Werner gave you money out of pity?
โOr maybe Werner has a secret and you know it. Maybe you used that to get money from him. Is that it? Have I figured it out?โ
Liora stayed completely silent. This time, Sanford was the one breaking down. He grabbed her shoulders, almost shaking. โMom, please. Say somethingโ
