Chapter 604
Sanford snapped. "Donโt change the subject. Whatโs your relationship with my mom? Why did you transfer money to her? And why did she call you?โ
Werner froze, suddenly recalling the phone call from Liora. She had warned him that Sanford was going to check the surveillance footage. It suddenly dawned on him. His gaze snapped toward Jonathan. "You two, youโre trying to set me up on purpose?โ Werner snapped.
โWerner,โ Jonathan said coolly, โwhen you did all this, did you ever consider how Donald and Cheryl would feel?โ
โWhat did I even do?โ Werner shot back.
Jonathan said coolly, โThe money from those accounts Cathy mentioned, you took it out and gave it to Liora, didnโt you?โ
Werner froze, and then the realization hit him. โNow I get it. Cathy sent you to spy on me. Youโre actually helping her investigate me? Jonathan, Iโm deeply disappointed in you.โ
Werner turned to leave, but Sanford yanked him back.
โYou still havenโt answered me. What exactly is going on between you and my mom? Why would you give her so much money, even if it means ruining yourself? Were you afraid weโd see something on the surveillance footage?โ asked Sanford.
Werner gave Sanford a complicated look, then shook him off impatiently. He snapped, โYouโre better off not knowing. It wonโt do you any good to know too much.โ
Werner tried to leave again, but Sanford clamped down on his arm with an iron grip.
Sanford finally understood, and his heart sank like a stone. โWhat else are you two hiding from us?โ he demanded.
Werner snapped, โI told you, knowing too much wonโt do you any good. Your mother doesnโt have much time left. What you need to do now is take good care of her.โ
โPrecisely because my mom is dying, I need to know the whole truth now. I have every right to know everything about her. Iโm her son. If she dies with all these grievances, how am I supposed to make it right for her?โ
Werner abruptly fell silent. He said, his voice heavy with pain, โSon, your mother hasnโt been wronged at all!โ
โSo, what is it you canโt say?โ he demanded. โDonโt think for a second I havenโt figured it out. Thereโs a secret between you two, a massive one.โ
Werner averted his gaze, stubbornly repeating, โI told you, I donโt know anything!โ
Sanford snapped, โDo you take me for a fool? If you โdonโt know anything,โ then why were you so eager to cut the power?"
โYouโre scared my mom and Irene said something that would incriminate you, arenโt you? I bet their whole feud probably stems from you.โ
Werner snapped, โStop making wild accusations. This has nothing to do with me.โ
Sanford sneered, his words cutting deep. โSo, what are you so afraid of? You coward.โ
Wernerโs eyes bulged as he glared at Sanford. โSay that again!โ
Sanford snapped, โAm I wrong? Isnโt this exactly how a coward acts? Itโs painfully obvious thereโs something going on between you and my mom. I bet that money you gave her was hush money.โ
Werner never expected Sanford to be so sharp; heโd practically hit the nail on the head. He then glanced at Jonathan, who remained as calm and composed as ever. Werner was certain Jonathan must have thought the same thing. โYou two brats are sticking your noses where they donโt belong.โ
Jonathan was about to speak, but Sanford cut him off. Sanford stepped in front of Jonathan, fixing Werner with a mocking glare. โYeah, weโre both Yorickโs sons. But getting to the bottom of this dirty laundry has dragged in too many people. Now your own family, your wife and kids, are paying the price.โ
Hearing Sanford repeatedly claim to be Yorickโs son, Werner was very close to blurting out the whole truth right then and there.
