Chapter 591
Seeing that Irene had finally calmed down, Jonathan had the housekeeper clean up the shattered plates from the floor. Jonathan poured Irene a glass of water and, gently pressing her shoulder, guided her into a seat, offering it to help her cool off.
Irene shot Jonathan a glare. โThe more I think about it, the more miserable I feel. And you donโt even care about your own mother.โ
โHow else should I care for you? Should I just stay home and join in bad-mouthing Liora? Quit my job? Stop earning money? Didnโt I already give you the credit card and hire several caretakers to keep you company? If you need anything else, just tell me, and Iโll make it happen.โ
Irene fell silent once more. Finally, she muttered, โI donโt need so many caretakers hovering around all day. Theyโre getting on my nerves. Two are plenty.โ
โAlright, anything else?โ
Irene snapped, โTell Liora to change her sonโs name. How dare she call him Sanford?โ
Jonathan said, โLiora has lung cancer. Itโs metastasized in the last two days.โ
Irene froze. Her fury instantly gave way to shock.
Jonathan asked Irene, โIs there anything else you want to tell me now?โ
Irene was still frozen in shock, mouth agape and eyes wide with disbelief.
Irene seemed unable to believe that Liora had so little time left. It took her a while to collect herself, but she was much calmer. Just like before, she said firmly, โI have nothing more to say about what happened between me and Liora.โ
โFine,โ Jonathan frowned, his gaze fixed intently on Irene. Jonathan let out a sigh, and his patience finally ran out. Then he said, โSince youโre sticking to your story and wonโt tell me anything, Iโm done meddling in your generationโs mess.โ
Ireneโs mind was still reeling from those words. Liora had advanced-stage cancer, and it had metastasized.
As Jonathan turned to leave, Irene blurted out, her voice trembling with disbelief, โWait, is that true? Does Liora really have advanced-stage lung cancer?โ
Jonathan looked at Irene and said flatly, โI have no reason to lie about this.โ
โWait, how did you find out about this?โ Irene blurted out, her voice edged with shock.
Jonathan replied calmly, โWerner told me.โ
Irene frowned. โYour uncle? He went to school with Liora, didnโt he? Why would he tell you about this?โ
โHe asked me for money, hoping Iโd find some specialists to treat Liora. I refused.โ Jonathan told Irene, โIโm not about to become a bleeding heart and help a woman who destroyed my family and has no real connection to me.โ
Ireneโs voice boomed with conviction. โYou did right to refuse. Even if she dies, itโs no more than she deserves, and death's..."
โAnd your uncle must be out of his mind, asking you for money? He should keep his nose out of other peopleโs business.โ
Jonathan arched an eyebrow mockingly. โDidnโt you just say you didnโt want to live? Planning to beat her to the grave?โ
Irene snorted. โThat was just talk. Iโd never actually throw my life away.โ
โSince everythingโs settled, Iโll get going. Iโve got a lot of work waiting for me at the office.โ
Irene quickly straightened Jonathanโs collar and gave his suit jacket an affectionate pat. โTake care of yourself and get some rest,โ she said gently.
Once Jonathan had left, Ireneโs spirits suddenly sagged once more.
Irene wasnโt sure. โWould a dying person reveal all their secrets before passing away?โ she wondered. โThen what about my own secret?โ
Werner had been pacing anxiously back and forth at home for the past two days. He called the doctors at Shaville Hospital and learned the devastating news: Lioraโs cancer had metastasized, making surgery pointless, and she didnโt have much time left.
But if he went to Shaville, Cathy would definitely give him hell. She might even suspect heโs sneaking off to see another woman again.
Just as Werner was at a loss for a good excuse to go to Shaville, an unexpected opportunity arose.
