Chapter 590
Jonathan shook his head slightly. โNo big deal, just a small matter.โ
Teresa studied Jonathanโs chiseled profile. To him, nothing ever seemed like a big deal.
โWhy are you staring at me like that?โ Jonathan asked.
Teresa said, โI was just wondering, now that youโre in this position, have you gained a new perspective on things and learned not to let them get to you as much?โ
Jonathan hooked his lips into a smirk, his gaze fixed on Teresa. โSo, should I take that as you care about me?โ
Teresa didnโt respond, her eyes fixed on the road as she continued driving.
Jonathan withdrew his gaze. โItโs true. Iโve learned to let go of many things. But when it comes to you, I canโt stay indifferent.โ
Teresaโs grip on the steering wheel tightened abruptly. Jonathanโs searing gaze seemed to burn right through her. Teresa parted her lips. โLโฆโ
She had barely uttered a word when Jonathanโs phone rang again from the passenger seat. Pressing her lips together, Teresa motioned for him to answer.
This time, she distinctly heard the voice on the other end say โIrene.โ
Jonathan frowned and muttered, โUnderstood.โ He hung up and immediately called his driver, โJust grab any car and wait for me at First Avenue on Sycamore Road.โ
Teresa pulled up to the spot where Jonathanโs driver was already waiting.
Jonathan got out of the car. โDrive safely,โ he told Teresa. โText me when you get home.โ
Teresa said, โIโm not going home. Iโm heading to the office.โ
โThen drop me a text when you get to the office,โ Jonathan said as he gently closed the car door. The call was from Ireneโs caretaker.
Ever since Irene learned that Sanford was Yorickโs illegitimate son, she fainted once in Shaville and remained depressed after returning to Nareigh.
Jonathan had once bluntly called Irene out, โYou said you were upset. I said Iโd sue him, but then you stopped me.โ
Irene knew she was wrong about this. It was a truth she couldnโt bring herself to admit to Jonathan. She had no choice but to let Liora and Sanford off the hook, yet she simply couldnโt swallow the bitterness.
Jonathan hired several caretakers to attend to Ireneโs daily life and even gave her a family credit card so she could shop and relax, but she remained utterly indifferent.
The caretaker called Jonathan, saying that during dinner, Irene suddenly cried out, โI donโt want to live anymore,โ and smashed her tableware, urgently asking Jonathan to come home and check on her.
Jonathan remained calm. He knew Irene wasnโt truly suicidal. She cherished her hard-earned fortune too much to ever give it up.
Upon seeing Jonathan, Irene spiraled her emotions even further out of control. With a loud crash, Irene smashed several more plates.
โHad enough?โ Jonathan said coldly as a plate shattered dangerously close to his feet.
Irene sobbed uncontrollably, her voice breaking as she cried out, โWhatโs the point of living? Iโd be better off dead. Iโm too ashamed to show my face in public anymore.โ
Irene couldnโt accept the fact that her husband had an illegitimate son with Liora. Even though Sanford was the result of Lioraโs scheming, the boy had been around for nearly thirty years, and she still couldnโt bring herself to accept this truth.
Jonathan said coldly, โIโve seen mistresses get dragged through the mud, but never the lawful wife. And now youโre talking about ending your life? Do you really think Liora would shed a single tear if you died? Is it really worth it?โ
Irene sneered, โSo what if itโs not worth it? I keep having nightmares about that damned Liora and her wretched son Sanford. No matter how I look at it, I just canโt swallow that bitterness.โ
โDidnโt I want to sue him for defamation? You made me drop the case and let it go. I even asked if you were hiding something from me, and you denied it. I gave in to your wishes, didnโt I?โ
Irene fell silent, rendered speechless by Jonathanโs piercing words.
