Chapter 522

Jennifer rushed to the hospital, only to find she was a step too late. Sanford had already submitted both Michaelโ€™s and his own hair samples for the DNA test.

Furious, Jennifer grabbed Sanford by the collar. โ€œWhat the hell are you trying to do?โ€

Sanford helplessly let go of Jennifer. โ€œWhat are you so scared of? Iโ€™m just curious about the kidโ€™s background, thatโ€™s all.โ€

โ€œNo, wait.โ€ Jennifer finally sensed that something was off.

Jennifer stared at Sanford in disbelief. โ€œYou pulled out Mikeโ€™s hair? But you donโ€™t have any of Teresaโ€™s hair, let alone the biological fatherโ€™s. So how could you possibly do the DNA test?โ€

โ€œRight,โ€ Sanford said slowly and deliberately. โ€œI pulled out Michaelโ€™s hair, and my own, to run a DNA test.โ€

Jennifer looked at Sanford in utter disbelief, then let out a scoffing laugh. โ€œCome on, thereโ€™s absolutely no way youโ€™re Michaelโ€™s father.โ€

Jennifer thought, โ€˜After all, Teresa had never even met Sanford before. So why is he acting so crazy?โ€™

Sanford nodded calmly. โ€œYeah, I know.โ€

โ€œThen why this unnecessary move?โ€ Jennifer demanded. โ€œI told you, the kidโ€™s situation is complicated, and I donโ€™t want you meddling in this.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not trying to interfere,โ€ Sanford said calmly. โ€œIโ€™m just curious whether Iโ€™m actually related to this kid in some way.โ€

โ€œHow is that even possible? Are you out of your mind, or did you forget your meds?โ€ Jennifer shot back at Sanford.

Seeing Jennifer look as if she were itching to check his forehead for a fever, Sanford offered a wry smile. โ€œWhat if I told you I might be the kidโ€™s uncle?โ€

Jennifer retorted, โ€œYou must be out of your mind. Seriously sick in the head. You need to see a psychiatrist.โ€

โ€œSay whatever you want.โ€ Sanford shrugged, turning slightly away. โ€œI paid for express serviceโ€“results in 24 hours.โ€

โ€œArenโ€™t you afraid I might just destroy the test report before you ever see it, and never tell you what it says?โ€ Jennifer shot back.

Sanford shrugged. โ€œThen Iโ€™ll just run the test again.โ€ Jennifer was speechless.

Sanford gave her a reassuring pat on the shoulder. โ€œSeriously though, I took Michaelโ€™s hair, right? Shouldnโ€™t Teresa be the one coming after me? Then why is it you?โ€

Teresa wasnโ€™t worried at all, yet Jennifer was practically frantic. That only made Sanford even more curious.

โ€˜Why was Jennifer so terrified?โ€™ he wondered. All he did was run a DNA test, yet it was enough to send the usually unflappable Jennifer chasing after him in person.

Jennifer clenched her fists. โ€œStop asking,โ€ she snapped. โ€œI donโ€™t want to talk about it.โ€

Sanford noticed Jennifer looked uneasy and probed cautiously, โ€œDid someone get something on you or are you being threatened?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Jennifer insisted, refusing to elaborate.

Jennifer fixed Sanford with a sharp stare and pressed, โ€œSanford, I just need one straight answer from you. Did you really use your own hair for the DNA test?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ Sanford replied softly.

โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll trust you this once,โ€ Jennifer said, enunciating each word. โ€œBut promise me, if the results show youโ€™re not related to Michael at all, youโ€™ll leave Nareigh for good.โ€

โ€œAlright,โ€ Sanford agreed, his tone firm and resolute.

โ€˜As long as the DNA test proves Michael isnโ€™t related to me, itโ€™ll also indirectly prove I have no connection to Jonathan. Then Iโ€™ll leave Nareigh for good,' Sanford thought.

Rather than just confirming the childโ€™s parentage, what Sanford truly wanted to know was whether Jonathan was actually his brother, and whether the man Liora had been pining for all these years, was, in fact, his father.

Back home, Teresa finally received Jenniferโ€™s call.

โ€˜Sanford actually used his own hair and Michaelโ€™s for a DNA test?โ€™ Teresa thought in disbelief. At first, just like Jennifer, Teresa thought Sanford must be either running a fever or simply out of his mind.

However, it suddenly struck Teresa. Sanford bore a striking resemblance to Werner, Donaldโ€™s father.

Turning to Jennifer, she asked, โ€œDoes Donald have any brothers? Could Sanford be his brother?โ€

Jennifer asked, โ€œWhat makes you say that?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you think Sanford looks a bit like Werner? Maybe itโ€™s just because Wernerโ€™s older now, but if you really look, donโ€™t you think they look alike? Otherwise, why would he want to do a DNA test with Michael?โ€ Teresa said.

Jennifer fell silent for a moment. Finally, she said, โ€œLet me go ask.โ€ She hung up the phone.

That evening, Jennifer waited for Donald to get off work. Over dinner, she lightheartedly brought up the subject with him. Donald said frankly, โ€œCherylโ€™s my only sister. My parents only had the two of us.โ€

Jennifer chuckled. โ€œI was just kidding. It suddenly struck me that my friend looks a bit like your dad.โ€

โ€œNot really, I donโ€™t think so,โ€ Donald replied. After all, no one would ever think a stranger looks like their own father.

Jennifer didnโ€™t press further. She told Teresa that Sanford had nothing to do with Donald, but speculated he might be connected to Jonathan.

โ€œNo way! Jonathanโ€™s an only child. Irene never had any other sons,โ€ Jennifer said.

โ€œThen Sanford told me he might be Michaelโ€™s uncle,โ€ Teresa said incredulously. โ€œIs he out of his damn mind or what?โ€

Teresa also wanted to know the reason.

Meanwhile, Sanford had stayed nearby the whole time, waiting anxiously for the test results. The moment Sanford got his hands on the test report, he tore it open and scanned the results.

Sanford was calm at first, then a rare smile broke across his face as the tension left his shoulders. He hadnโ€™t felt this genuinely happy in ages. Everything had unfolded exactly as heโ€™d predicted. Still, he turned to the geneticist to confirm it.

Sanford asked, โ€œSo, this means Iโ€™m related to Michael, right?โ€

The doctor said, โ€œThe test results show some matching DNA sequences, but the similarities are limited.โ€

The initial autosomal DNA test confirmed that Sanford and Michael were not biologically related. However, a Yโ€“chromosome test can yield results.

In other words, starting from the Lynn family patriarchโ€™s generation, all male descendants in the direct paternal line will share identical Y chromosome.

The DNA test results only showed that Sanford and Michael shared the same paternal lineage. It couldnโ€™t confirm a fatherโ€“son relationship, let alone determine their exact familial connection.

Sanford declared. โ€œOf course the kid isnโ€™t my son. Iโ€™m his uncle.โ€

The doctor paused for a few seconds. โ€œItโ€™s more likely that youโ€™re a halfโ€“uncle or a more distant uncle. If you were his full uncle, the autosomal DNA test should have shown that right away.โ€

Sanford explained, โ€œThatโ€™s because the kidโ€™s father and I have different mothers. So Iโ€™m more of a halfโ€“uncle than a full one.โ€

The doctor looked a bit baffled. โ€œYour family situation is really complicated.โ€

Sanford wasted no more words and quickly left. He immediately sent the DNA test results to Jennifer. Jennifer insisted on meeting Sanford right away.

โ€œJennifer, I canโ€™t meet you right now, but rest assured my promise stands. My business wonโ€™t drag you or Teresa into it. Besides, Iโ€™m Michaelโ€™s uncle now. Iโ€™d never hurt him.โ€

Jennifer insisted, โ€œLetโ€™s meet faceโ€“toโ€“face. Iโ€™ll bring Teresa, and we canโ€”โ€

โ€œJennifer,โ€ Sanford said with a wry, helpless smile. โ€œIf you donโ€™t trust me, then forget it.โ€

Sanford hung up without another word. Without a momentโ€™s hesitation, Sanford made his next call to Liora.
