Listen to this chapter:

Jenniferโ€™s face was expressionless. โ€œWhy should I care about her? I just happened to have a prenatal checkup, so I dropped by to see her while I was at it.โ€

Teresa glanced at Jenniferโ€™s barely noticeable baby bump and frowned, โ€œYouโ€™re way too thin. You really need to take better care of yourself and eat more nutritious food, especially now that youโ€™re pregnant.โ€

Jenniferโ€™s arms were painfully thin, her whole body weighing only around 100 pounds. The corners of her lips twitched slightly as she said, โ€œHow rare for you to show concern. Itโ€™s been ages since we last spoke this civilly.โ€

The words were barely out of her mouth when Evelyn, having just finished her MRI, emerged from the room. Spotting Jennifer, a flicker of surprise crossed her face.

โ€œActually, she came here specifically to see you,โ€ Teresa said.

Jennifer turned away. โ€œJust passing through. Canโ€™t you stop being such a worry to your daughters? You canโ€™t even take care of yourself.โ€

Evelyn, unfazed, smiled warmly, gently taking Jenniferโ€™s hand, then reaching for Teresaโ€™s as well. Evelyn smiled warmly and said, โ€œHaving you both by my side makes me feel truly blessed.โ€ Jennifer pulled her hand away abruptly.

Back in the hospital room, Michael didnโ€™t say a word. He just threw himself into Teresaโ€™s arms, sobbing so hard that his tears quickly soaked through her shirt. Teresa quickly pulled him close and asked, โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong, sweetie? Did Aunt Isabel pick on you?โ€

Michael shook his head, sniffled, and pointed first at his head, then specifically at his thick hair, his eyes brimming with tears. Teresa gently stroked and checked Michaelโ€™s head, her fingers carefully probing. โ€œWhat happened to your head, sweetie? Did you bump into something?โ€

โ€œThat creepy uncle pulled out my hair,โ€ Michael cried. Teresa froze. Jennifer and Evelyn, standing nearby, were equally at a loss.

Between Michaelโ€™s tearful stammering and Isabelโ€™s babbling, Teresa finally figured out what had really happened. Jenniferโ€™s brows furrowed as Teresaโ€™s gaze instantly locked onto her.

โ€œSanford just loves stalking people. He must have followed you to the hospital. Now look whatโ€™s happened,โ€ Teresa said.

Jennifer snapped, โ€œIโ€™m going after him.โ€

Teresa scoffed. โ€œHeโ€™s probably already at the DNA testing center by now.โ€

โ€œHe canโ€™t be that quick. He only got the kidโ€™s hair, not yours. Whoโ€™s he gonna compare it with?โ€ Jennifer said. With that, she rushed off.

Sanford was still driving when Jennifer called. He wasnโ€™t surprised. As expected, she immediately demanded, โ€œAre you following me?โ€

โ€œJennifer, I told you Iโ€™d never hurt you or Teresa,โ€ Sanford said.

Jennifer snapped, โ€œThen why did you take a kidโ€™s hair? Donโ€™t make things worse for me, will you?โ€

Sanford sighed, โ€œThat little boy is Teresaโ€™s child, isnโ€™t he? Even Isabel admitted it. Why are you still denying it?โ€

โ€œIsabel? Sheโ€™s just a kid. What does she know? If you insist on believing some snot-nosed brat, then fine, I canโ€™t stop you,โ€ Jennifer said.

Sanford chuckled at that. โ€œJennifer, I know you too well. If this really has nothing to do with Teresa, why are you being so defensive? Youโ€™re telling on yourself.โ€

Jennifer fell silent. She said to Sanford, โ€œThat boyโ€™s situation is really complicated. I really shouldnโ€™t have let you come to Nareighโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThanks to you, I got to meet someone special,โ€ Sanford said.

โ€œWhat the hell do you mean? What exactly are you trying to do?โ€ Jennifer demanded when Sanford stayed silent, then cut straight to the point. โ€œWhere are you?โ€

โ€œFine, come find me then. Iโ€™m at the entrance of the DNA testing center,โ€ Sanford said. After hanging up, Sanford pulled into the parking lot and parked his car.

He carefully placed Michaelโ€™s hair in a separate bag and his own in another, preparing for an expedited DNA test.
