Just as Teresa Johnston was about to tell her that she should also thank someone else, Evelyn Davis spoke first, “I still owe you an apology.”

Teresa was momentarily stunned. Evelyn held her hand, sincerely apologizing. She admitted to favoring her other daughters and felt the least regret towards Teresa. When making the most money, she gave Teresa plenty of cash and made sure she had the best life possible.

Evelyn told herself it was fine for Teresa to endure a bit of unfairness now. Compared to Hannah, who never knew a mother’s love, and Isabel, who’d always lived a life of constant upheaval, Teresa was actually quite fortunate in her eyes.

She was always telling Teresa to give in to Hannah, and constantly made Michael yield to Isabel, because in her mind, Teresa was simply the one who ought to make those sacrifices.

Evelyn knew she was wrong. “I failed Hannah and Isabel, but I never should have made you and Mike bear my mistakes.” Her voice was heavy with regret. “Most of all, I know you spent your whole childhood just waiting for an apology from me.”

Evelyn finally gave Teresa a heartfelt apology that she had owed her. She shouldn’t have chosen not to be there for Teresa during her divorce from Philip. She shouldn’t have left Teresa with her grandparents and neglected to visit her for so long.

She shouldn’t have ignored Teresa after remarrying. She shouldn’t have brushed her off with a cold “I have a new life now” whenever Teresa called during the holidays.

There were so many things she owed Teresa an apology for. Evelyn couldn’t recall all the other times at that moment but joked that she would make up for them over time.

Teresa abruptly pulled away from Evelyn, her head bowed. “I need to use the restroom.” Teresa shut the door and leaned against the sink, and her shoulders shook with silent, uncontrollable sobs.

The running water drowned out her sobs. After what felt like an eternity, Teresa finally stepped out of the bathroom and saw Jonathan.

Her puffy red eyes met Jonathan’s gaze. Teresa averted her gaze, her voice slightly unsteady. “What brings you here?”

“Jonathan came to visit me,” Evelyn said warmly. “I really must thank you properly, Jonathan. You helped out a lot with Charlie’s lawsuit.”

“I really didn’t do much,” Jonathan said. “It was Teresa who found such a professional and responsible lawyer.”

Evelyn said with a knowing smile, “I’m sure it was you who reached out to Vaughn.”

“It was nothing, really just a small favor. Teresa did most of the work for you.”

Hearing this, Evelyn looked at Teresa with heartfelt warmth. “I’m so blessed to have Teresa.”

Teresa fell silent for a few seconds, then looked at Jonathan and said to Evelyn, “I’ll walk him out first. There’s something I want to discuss with him in private.”

“Alright, you two, go ahead and have a good talk.” Evelyn lay back down again.

Teresa and Jonathan left the hospital room. As they walked along the secluded, tree–lined path, Teresa turned to Jonathan and murmured. “Thank you.”

“Benny called me. I had no idea he was going to testify in court. I was planning to take him out for dinner, but he said just treating you would be enough. Thank you for doing so much for my mom’s case,” Teresa said.
