Chapter 505
Jennifer said calmly, โThere was a problem with the pregnancy test. Iโm not pregnant, so stop spreading these rumors.โ
Lucia just nodded, thinking, โI wasnโt making things up. You said it yourself at the wedding, and everyone was there!โ
Jennifer headed into a meeting. When it ended, she casually chatted with the others in the room. โIโm not pregnant. What I said at the wedding was all a misunderstanding.โ
The room erupted in murmurs of surprise, wondering whether Donald knew this.
However, Donald wasnโt there.
After leaving the conference room, Jennifer went to grab a coffee, hoping it would help her shake off her lingering fatigue.
She hadnโt slept at all the night before, not after that argument with Donald. She touched her belly gently and muttered, โIโm sorry, little one. I need to focus on work right now. I have to keep this to myself.โ
Just then, her phone rang. Vincent asked her to come to his office again.
Donald was there too, his eyes fixed intently on Jennifer.
Vincent let out a sigh and said, โDonald told me youโre pregnant, but you said you werenโt. What on earth is going on? Did you lie about this? If so, the promotionโฆโ
โMr. Foster, Iโm truly not pregnant. It was just a misunderstanding,โ said Jennifer.
Donald stared at Jennifer in utter disbelief.
Jennifer pulled Donald closer and said, โIโm not pregnant. The test I used was expired. I meant to tell you, but I got caught up in Ms. Nelsonโs business. I didnโt hide it on purpose.โ
Donald was still skeptical.
Jennifer said, โMr. Foster, Iโve already started working on the paper you asked for. Since Iโm not pregnant, letโs just stick to the original plan.โ
Vincent paused for a while and said, โAlright then. Just make sure youโre ready.โ
Jennifer nodded and tugged the stunned Donald out of Vincentโs office.
Donald remained silent, looking very disappointed. Jennifer could tell that Donald was still upset. After all, they had a falling-out yesterday.
Donald buried his face in his hands, saying, โAre you really not pregnant? Then why did youโฆโ
โI got it wrong. Iโm not pregnant,โ Jennifer insisted.
Donald said, โFine. Iโll go talk to my parents, so they wonโt get their hopes up for nothing.โ
Before Donald could go, Jennifer reached out and wrapped her arms around him from behind. However, he gently pried her hands off.
Jennifer felt like everything was slipping through her fingers. With trembling breath, she pressed her face to Donaldโs back. โIโm sorry. I shouldnโt have spoken about you or your parents that way in front of Irene. Please, donโt leave me.โ
Donald finally turned around to face her. He could hardly believe that this proud woman was actually apologizing to him.
Jennifer said with tears in her eyes, โThese past few days have been hard. Our wedding was ruined, and Ms. Nelson is in the hospital. Youโre right. I shouldnโt have embarrassed you in front of others. Donโt shut me out, okay? I canโt lose you.โ
Donald said, โWeโre a family, and I hope you truly see me as your husband. Can we just try to be happy together?โ
Jennifer nodded softly.
Despite his sadness, Donald still comforted Jennifer, saying, โThereโs no rush to have a baby. Letโs wait until after your promotion. Iโll talk to my parents and Iโm sure theyโll understand.โ
Jennifer lowered her head again and gave a quiet nod.
Cathy and Werner knew Irene had reunited with her mother, and they were also aware of Jenniferโs disrespectful remarks toward Irene. They didnโt say anything, mostly because they believed Jennifer was pregnant with the Lynn familyโs little boy.
When Donald came home and broke the news that Jennifer wasnโt pregnant, Werner and Cathy refused to believe it. โWhat the hell is going on?โ
โThe tests confirmed sheโs not pregnant,โ Donald explained, handing over the report. โHereโs Jenniferโs ultrasound. Turns out the test she used was expired. It gave a false result.โ
Werner and Cathy fell into heavy silence.
Donald sighed and said reassuringly, โDonโt be upset. Weโre still young, and weโll have a child when the time is right.โ
Werner said with a stern face, โWe already told everyone we were gonna have a grandchild! What are we supposed to do now!โ
Cathy was overwhelmed with sadness and utter disappointment. She felt like she had been made a complete fool of. However, she could do nothing about it.
She sighed and said, โFine, itโs up to you guys. I bought some gifts for Jennifer. Just take them home.โ
Donald said, โThanks, Mom.โ He returned home laden with a generous amount of gifts.
Cathy had bought only the finest ones in the storeโthe kind she wouldnโt even get for Cheryl. Considering how hard it was for Jennifer, she bought all the stuff she thought would suit her. Now she was told Jennifer wasnโt pregnant.
As night fell, Jennifer was absorbed in writing her medical research paper in the study while Donald was cooking in the kitchen. He called out, โJennifer, dinnerโs ready. I got this potato soup recipe from Mom.โ
Jenniferโs fingers paused on the keyboard. She said, โIโm not really hungry. Donโt mind me.โ
Donald insisted, โCome on, you can deal with your paper later. Cold soup tastes terrible.โ
Hearing this, Jennifer finally set aside her work.
They sat across from each other, eating in silence. Donald broke the silence and said, โI told Dad and Mom.โ
โWhat did they say?โ Jennifer asked.
Donald said, โThey said itโs okay. They understand you and they didnโt want us to feel too much pressure.โ
Jennifer lowered her head and took a sip of the soup. Her voice softened. โLetโs talk about this after Iโm promoted to the department head.โ
โOkay.โ Donald lowered his head and mechanically picked at his food, his mind elsewhere.
He believed he was going to be a father, but now he had been slammed with disappointment. All he could do now was tell himself that they had plenty of time and they would definitely have a child when the time was right.
Teresa got off work late today and took Michael to Willow Restaurant for dinner. On the way home, she stopped to buy him a toy, and just as she was about to pay, someone reached out and paid for her.
โHeโs the creepy guy from Jenniferโs wedding,โ Michael exclaimed, immediately ducking behind Teresa and clinging to her.
Teresa looked over at Sanford, her gaze wary.
Sanford smiled at Michael and said, โI told you we would meet again, kid.โ Then, straightening up, he looked at Teresa, saying, โItโs her son, right?โ
