Chapter 504
Jennifer said, โIt was Donald who told Jonathan where you were. I know you donโt want to get involved again.โ
โJennifer, youโre overthinking it,โ Fiona smiled, gently rubbing Jenniferโs hair. โJonathan told me on the way here that it was Gordon who messed up your wedding. Iโll make him apologize.โ
Gordon, suffering from Alzheimerโs, straightened up as soon as Fiona gave him a glare, and quickly apologized to Jennifer. It seemed that he respected Fiona a lot.
Fiona said to Jennifer, โI heard you havenโt been going to work lately. You have to let it go and do what you should do.โ
Now that Fiona put it that way, Jennifer felt she shouldnโt push the matter any further.
Fiona turned sternly to Irene and Heidi. โYou two didnโt keep an eye on Gordon and let him cause trouble at Jenniferโs wedding. You owe her an apology too.โ
With obvious reluctance, Irene and Heidi finally offered a grudging apology under Fionaโs commanding presence.
Thanks to Fiona, the whole thing was finally settled.
Jennifer held Teresaโs hand and said to Fiona, โMs. Nelson, sheโs my younger sister, Teresa. Well, itโs late, and weโll leave you to your family reunion.โ
Teresa passed by Fiona, politely bowing her head in greeting. Fiona said she was really pretty.
After Teresa left, Fiona turned her head slightly and noticed Jonathan staring intently in the direction Teresa had gone. She said, โWhat are you looking at?โ
Jonathan pulled his gaze back and gave a helpless smile.
Irene said, โMom, you gotta talk to him. Heโs still obsessed with Jenniferโs sister, even though theyโve been divorced for three years.โ
Fiona sounded very surprised. โReally? Jonathan never told me this. Hey, why did you two get divorced?โ
โWe just didnโt get along,โ Jonathan said quietly. Now that everything was clear, it was time to return to the Lynn residence.
Fiona studied Jonathan for a long moment before giving a slow nod.
As the group prepared to leave, Fiona spoke quietly with Genevieve, asking Gordon to wait outside.
Suddenly, a loud thud came from outside. Fiona heard a familiar voice and rushed out, only to see Gordon collapse on the ground, coughing blood in his mouth.
Fiona froze in shock. Irene and Heidi knew well what was going on. Gordon had terminal lung cancer.
Jonathan, who was downstairs in his car, got a call from Irene, saying that Gordon had collapsed. Without hesitation, he hurried upstairs.
Fiona sat by Gordonโs bed. She asked Jonathan why he hadnโt told her about Gordonโs cancer diagnosis. This was the first time she had heard the news.
Jonathan said softly, โGrandpa didnโt even know about his illness. He was so looking forward to seeing you. How could I bring myself to tell him the truth?โ
Hearing this, Fiona closed her eyes briefly, tears streaming silently down her face. She said, โCan you give us a minute? I just want to sit with him for a bit.โ
โOf course.โ Jonathan gave a quiet nod before carefully shutting the door.
After getting home, Teresa sent Jonathan a message to thank him. She didnโt mention a word about Irene calling her over and saying all those harsh words.
Jennifer returned home, preparing to officially return to work at the hospital tomorrow.
Donald looked grim, staring at Jennifer as if she were a stranger. He said, โAre you happy now? You got your pride, and everything went your way.โ
โWhat exactly are you trying to say?โ Jennifer retorted sharply at Donald.
โYou ran your mouth in front of Jonathan and Aunt Irene like I didnโt even exist. You said my parents were brown-nosing her. Great, you got your peace and made the rest of us look pathetic.โ Donaldโs voice was filled with hurt and disappointment.
All the way home, he had waited for Jennifer to say something, but in the end, he was the one who broke the silence.
โJennifer, youโre so full of yourself.โ For the first time ever, Donald slammed the door and stormed out.
Once he was gone, Jenniferโs gaze shifted. She looked a little shaken, thinking, โHow could he just leave like that? I didnโt do anything wrong.โ
When Gordon woke up and saw Fiona beside him, a smile bloomed on his face. He closed his eyes again, falling into a light sleep.
Gordonโs condition was getting worse. Fiona said she needed to go back because the kids there still needed her. Hearing that, Gordon refused to let her go alone. Wherever she went, he had to follow.
โIโll have someone drive you back,โ Jonathan said.
He knew that all Gordon wanted was a quiet place where no one knew them. He wanted to grow old beside the woman he loved.
Fiona agreed. She couldnโt bring herself to say no to a dying man. Even though she hadnโt truly forgiven Gordon, seeing him in this state made her heart ache.
Irene and Heidi saw them off. โMom, if you ever need anything, just let us know. And you can come back any time.โ
Fiona sternly warned Irene and Heidi, โYou better behave yourselves. I know how pushy you can get. Leave Jennifer alone.โ
Irene threw up her hands in exasperation. โSheโs the one stirring things up. I donโt want to argue with her. Iโm too old for this.โ
Fiona said, โGlad you said that. Life treats you well. You have a good son to handle everything for you. Just do something youโve always wanted to do. Stop annoying the kids. Theyโre doing their best.โ
Irene pursed her lips, not daring to argue. She nodded. โI know.โ
The next day, Jennifer came back to the hospital. When Vincent came to her, she got a little nervous.
However, Vincent told her he would let the past go and that as long as she performed well over the coming months, she could be up for promotion to department head by yearโs end.
He said, โYou should thank Mr. Lynn-โ
โWhat did you say?โ Jennifer asked, not quite catching what he said.
โNever mind. You may go now.โ Remembering Jonathanโs instructions, Vincent stopped himself from saying more. He didnโt want to get involved.
Before leaving, he added, โOh, by the way. Rumor has it youโre pregnant. Is that true?โ
โIโm not pregnant,โ Jennifer quickly replied.
Vincent said, โWell, so itโs just hearsay. You can go back to work now.โ
Jennifer nodded and said, โYes. Iโll take my leave.โ
Jennifer went back to her office, letting out a quiet sigh of relief. She thought that maybe things were finally looking up. She wanted to share the good news with Donald, but then a thought struck her, and she frowned.
A little while later, Lucia came in with a cup of coffee. โMs. Nelson, you must be tired during your pregnancy. Try this. It tastes really good.โ
Jennifer cast a cool glance at Lucia. โIโm not pregnant.โ
Lucia looked utterly stunned. โWait, what? Didnโt you announce you were pregnant at the wedding?โ
