Chapter 474

Evelyn’s words trailed off as she spotted someone approaching. “Mom,” Jennifer called out, then added coldly, “What are you doing here with Teresa’s ex-husband?”

Evelyn lowered her head in guilt. “Jonathan and I were just chatting.”

Jennifer’s eyes fell on the bank card on the table, and she seemed to understand. She pulled Evelyn from her seat. Turning to Jonathan, she said, “Thanks for your kindness. But you’re not Teresa’s husband anymore. Stop putting her in a difficult position. Don’t give her any more hope, and don’t meet with anyone from our family alone again.”

Jonathan frowned. Before he could respond, Jennifer had already led Evelyn away.

Evelyn got into Jennifer’s car. Tears welled in her eyes as she looked at Jennifer. It only hit Evelyn after she sat in the car that Jennifer had actually called her “Mom” just before.

Evelyn said, “Hannah, what did you just call me? You finally—”

“Ms. Davis,” Jennifer interrupted, pulling over and turning off the car. “What exactly are you trying to do? Why are you still meeting up with Teresa’s ex? Are you hoping to get money from him and reveal the truth about Mike?”

Evelyn shook her head. “You misunderstood me, Hannah. Jonathan offered me money, but I didn’t take it. I just saw he still cares about Teresa, and honestly, I can’t stand seeing them like this.”

Jennifer let out a cold laugh. “No wonder you always get taken advantage of. Do you actually feel sorry for men? After everything they’ve put you through, haven’t you learned?”

Evelyn fell silent, unable to argue. She hadn’t been there for her daughters all these years, and the guilt weighed heavily on her.

She said, “Charlie was arrested, so I asked Jonathan to help me find a lawyer. He agreed immediately. He’s always willing to help me, no questions asked.”

Jennifer was speechless. “Why did you ask him for a lawyer? Why not ask Teresa or me? You act like your own children are gone or something.”

Evelyn sighed. “Hannah, you’re misunderstanding me again. That’s not what I meant. Just—”

Jennifer interrupted. “Alright, I don’t care what you mean. Teresa’s ex has nothing to do with her, or with us. Whatever is happening to him, he brings it on himself. He’s rich and powerful. He doesn’t need our pity. Teresa is just stupid and too soft-hearted, always letting her ex-husband manipulate her.”

Evelyn said, “Hannah, don’t talk about Teresa like that. If it weren’t for her, Charlie wouldn’t have been caught this time. I used to think Teresa was immature, but maybe that’s my fault as her mother.”

Jennifer let out a cold laugh. “What about me? I had been missing for years, all alone. It took everything I had to get where I am now. Did you ever once think about my feelings?”

Evelyn replied, “Hannah, how could I not care about your feelings? I want to consider both you and Teresa.”

“Then just shut up.” Jennifer gripped the steering wheel tightly with her slender fingers.

She said, “My wedding is right around the corner. This is my dream wedding. Are you doing this on purpose to see me become the laughingstock of the whole city? Do you want me dead?”

“Hannah.” Evelyn was startled by Jennifer’s outburst.

Jennifer forced herself to calm down. She took a deep breath. Her face was cold and expressionless. She said, “If you still see me as your daughter, then keep your mouth shut and stay out of it. You come to my wedding, and after that, I have nothing more to do with you.”
