Chapter 474
Evelynโs words trailed off as she spotted someone approaching. โMom,โ Jennifer called out, then added coldly, โWhat are you doing here with Teresaโs ex-husband?โ
Evelyn lowered her head in guilt. โJonathan and I were just chatting.โ
Jenniferโs eyes fell on the bank card on the table, and she seemed to understand. She pulled Evelyn from her seat. Turning to Jonathan, she said, โThanks for your kindness. But youโre not Teresaโs husband anymore. Stop putting her in a difficult position. Donโt give her any more hope, and donโt meet with anyone from our family alone again.โ
Jonathan frowned. Before he could respond, Jennifer had already led Evelyn away.
Evelyn got into Jenniferโs car. Tears welled in her eyes as she looked at Jennifer. It only hit Evelyn after she sat in the car that Jennifer had actually called her โMomโ just before.
Evelyn said, โHannah, what did you just call me? You finallyโโ
โMs. Davis,โ Jennifer interrupted, pulling over and turning off the car. โWhat exactly are you trying to do? Why are you still meeting up with Teresaโs ex? Are you hoping to get money from him and reveal the truth about Mike?โ
Evelyn shook her head. โYou misunderstood me, Hannah. Jonathan offered me money, but I didnโt take it. I just saw he still cares about Teresa, and honestly, I canโt stand seeing them like this.โ
Jennifer let out a cold laugh. โNo wonder you always get taken advantage of. Do you actually feel sorry for men? After everything theyโve put you through, havenโt you learned?โ
Evelyn fell silent, unable to argue. She hadnโt been there for her daughters all these years, and the guilt weighed heavily on her.
She said, โCharlie was arrested, so I asked Jonathan to help me find a lawyer. He agreed immediately. Heโs always willing to help me, no questions asked.โ
Jennifer was speechless. โWhy did you ask him for a lawyer? Why not ask Teresa or me? You act like your own children are gone or something.โ
Evelyn sighed. โHannah, youโre misunderstanding me again. Thatโs not what I meant. Justโโ
Jennifer interrupted. โAlright, I donโt care what you mean. Teresaโs ex has nothing to do with her, or with us. Whatever is happening to him, he brings it on himself. Heโs rich and powerful. He doesnโt need our pity. Teresa is just stupid and too soft-hearted, always letting her ex-husband manipulate her.โ
Evelyn said, โHannah, donโt talk about Teresa like that. If it werenโt for her, Charlie wouldnโt have been caught this time. I used to think Teresa was immature, but maybe thatโs my fault as her mother.โ
Jennifer let out a cold laugh. โWhat about me? I had been missing for years, all alone. It took everything I had to get where I am now. Did you ever once think about my feelings?โ
Evelyn replied, โHannah, how could I not care about your feelings? I want to consider both you and Teresa.โ
โThen just shut up.โ Jennifer gripped the steering wheel tightly with her slender fingers.
She said, โMy wedding is right around the corner. This is my dream wedding. Are you doing this on purpose to see me become the laughingstock of the whole city? Do you want me dead?โ
โHannah.โ Evelyn was startled by Jenniferโs outburst.
Jennifer forced herself to calm down. She took a deep breath. Her face was cold and expressionless. She said, โIf you still see me as your daughter, then keep your mouth shut and stay out of it. You come to my wedding, and after that, I have nothing more to do with you.โ
